If you like musical turbulance...

There are people who love Modest Mouse and there are people who hate Modest Mouse, and both seem to base their opinions on the same things. The crazy lyrics (sometimes nonsensical, sometimes poetry), Brock's nasal/lispy/screeching vocals, the way his guitar sometimes takes off with a mind of its own.
If you're looking for something polished and pretty, look elsewhere. If you're looking for insanity, on the other hand, you'll probably love this. Lyrics like "Eating snowflakes with plastic forks/And a paper plate of course" and "Oh/My mind is all made up so I'll have to sleep in it" are just a few tasty samples of Brock's wordplay. The music is equally unique.
The first track, "Teeth Like God's Shoeshine" is a prototype Mouse song - plunges you in headfirst, sweeps you through madness, surprises you with the tenderness of the slower part, and makes sure to shock your senses once more before ending. "Cowboy Dan" is another good example this style.
Instrumentally, Modest Mouse are tops. The last few minutes of "Trailer Trash" are musical bliss. And check out the drumming on the last track - THAT'S how you close an album. I have only the highest recommendation of this band.
Well done guys! Well executed!

Movie Music

This is my favorite Modest Mouse CD. It is so ecclectic (as most are). But it really swings around into different songs/styles/beats/tempoes, etc. My favorite MM song is "Heart Cooks Brain", I first heard this in the credits to a movie playing on HBO and I stayed up until it aired again on HBO W (like 4 am) so I could find out who wrote it and go get it. But I put it behind me for a year or so and ended up getting Good News... and Moon & Antarctica first. Then ran out and bought every MM CD I could get my hands on and lived happily ever after. Faves-#1. Heart Cooks Brain, Convenient Parking, Out of Gas, Truckers Atlas, Polar Opposites. A great album!
My favorite Modest Mouse album

This is my favorite Modest Mouse album, and that is saying somthing, because I love all of their albums. They have been in constant rotation in my stereo since I first heard them a few years ago. I first heard of Modest Mouse after hearing "Float on" from their album Good News for people Love Bad News. I loved that album so much that I bought the rest of their albums. All of their lyrics are clever, and I absolutely love the differentness of their sound. You can definately tell when you are hearing a Modest Mouse song. My favorite songs on this album are Doin' the Cockroach and Styraphome boots, though all of them are great. Buy this album. You won't regret it.
My favorite album of all time

Issaquah, WA, indie rock trio MODEST MOUSE was formed in 1993 by vocalist/guitarist Isaac Brock, bassist Eric Judy, and drummer Jeremiah Green. This album was released in 1997 and was the band's first for US label MATADOR. And talk about original, the band has something for just about everyone! They can do quiet, brooding acoustics, dark and pounding thrashers, funky jump-around emo, just about anything. The opening track, "Teeth Like God's Shoeshine," explodes out of your speakers with sharp, see-sawing guitars and shouted vocals, an irresistible melange of angular rhythms andmighty, powerful dynamics. The rest of the songs are similarly pulled along by some unseen force, driven by an energy found in classic post-punk bands like Thinking Fellers Union, Local 282 or Drunken Boat.
Easily the best album of the nineties

I know, that's a lofty statement, what with Radiohead's "OK Computer" and My Bloody Valentine's beloved "Loveless" having also come out in that particular decade. Oh, this is not to mention Pavement's brilliant discography and Neutral Milk Hotel's "On avery island" and "in an aeroplane over the sea", all of which are solid contenders for this title. Moving on.
The difficulty with saying something such as the title of this review is that taste in music is extremely subjective. I don't know what will appeal to other people. Hell, I can't even say that this will appeal to Modest Mouse fans, especially newer ones. It is a very different album from "Dead" and "Good News."
While I cannot break down exactly what makes this album so unique, I can point out one thing about it that I cannot honestly say about any other cd that I own: When LCW comes on, it doesn't matter if I feel like listening to contemplative indie rock (like "the national"), Metal ("Dethklok"), rap ("three six mafia"), house ("ricardo villalobos"), dance ("justice"), noise (the boredoms), punk (bad brains), electronica (fennesz) or even orchestral music, I stop caring about whether I am listening to the right thing for my mood and I just shut up and listen.
masterful transition

i was listenting to crooked rain at work when a girl came up to me and said i should listen to modest mouse. two tears later i bought this album and cursed my stupidity in delay. brilliance is apparent throughout. great transitions between song sections that retain the former and herald the forthcoming masterfully. buy this album if you like pavement
No brainer

"Buy LCW and M&A together for 23.46!!"
Even if you were stranded in the desert and needed the 23.46 for gas money to get out, it would be worth it.
the best album ever

This was the first album I heard by Modest Mouse, months ago, and I absolutely fell in love. I just can't get enough of it. Brock's lisp is endearing and his lyrics are heartfelt poetry. Musically the songs on this album are diverse and catchy. Each song tells a story, and if you look close enough you'll find a deeper meaning. It's probably my favorite album by any band, ever. It's a tough choice between this and Pink Floyd's "The Wall".
"Doin' the Cockroach" is quite possibly my favorite rock song of all time. All the muted notes, the intensity of the vocals, the crazy lyrics, all make it a song I just can't get sick of.
"Lounge (Closing Time)" is a wonderful sequel to "Lounge" from a previous album. It's just as bipolar as the first, and it makes your want to dance just as much. It also makes you want to cry just as much.
"Cowboy Dan" is a ballad, and it's one of the saddest songs I know of. I find Cowboy Dan is a character to pity and to hate, a character to relate to and learn from. The guitar solo is heart-wrenching. The message of futility is timeless and universal, and something Brock seems address in many songs.
"Teeth Like God's Shoeshine" is like a few different songs in one, something Modest Mouse does in a lot of songs.
There isn't a song on this album that I don't love.
