2002-02-14Now 3dfx has been bought out by nVidia look at the ... site for excellent new drivers which keep this amazing card bang up to date.
Be sure that you have an extra cooling fan inside !!

If you are a tech savvy lives in a hot climate area and the most of your PCI slots are already occupied, please make sure that you have an extra cooling fan inside the machine to blow out the heat.
The card emits significant heat and it does not come along with attached cooling fan. Attached static cooler is not enough.
My card has broken after nine months.
An old card

Tecnologically, this card is out of date. Spend your money for a new generation card. If you are one of those Voodoo fans, at least try the new series.
Still a pretty decent card

First of all, this is not the End-all video card. But it does combine good price and performance and the best supported drivers in the gaming world (one should expect this as 3dfx basically created the 3D accelerator market). This card runs HalfLife : CounterStrike Mod with the WickedGL(.com) drivers at around 20-50 FPS, which is extremely playable (On a 500Mhz K6-2, 64MB RAM). But when I used it (after a FlashBIOS update) with my G4/400, performance was lacking in Quake3. This card runs neck and neck with a Rage 128 Pro AGP in the Mac world. I suspect the drivers and the somewhat dated hardware are to blame. I'm going to get a Radeon for my G4, and a GeForce II MX for my PC in the future. This was a great video card a year ago, but it's starting to show its age. If you really can't afford the extra ... for a GeForce II MX, this is a decent video card.
HOLY SCHNIKEYS!!!

Designed to enhance the latest generation of computer hardware, the Voodoo 3-3000 provides DVD hardware acceleration to ensure a seemless 30 frame per second without framedrop. And the standard TV/S-Video jack on the Voodoo 3-3000 instantly allows you to output to a compatible TV or Monitor to create the ultimate home entertainment experience.
Good god in heaven...

This graphics card is incredible. It runs games like a dream, I can tell you my Counter-Strike scores have gone WAY up since I bought this baby. It also makes Unreal look great, not to mention Need for Speed, Everquest (don't worry I quit that) and Diablo 2. Trust me, you'll love it. Installation is a snap!
A Generation behind, but still a solid choice

For those who want the fastest video card with all the newest features, they had best move on and look at the Nvidia Geforce2 and the ATI Radeon. However, those cards work best with the newest hardware and programs. For a lot of us who may not be hardcore gamers, a Voodoo3 3000 is still a very respectable choice. No it does not have any new fancy technology. No T&L support of the Geforce or Radeon, nor can it support AGP texturing (still getting started but it'll be more common), it's limited to 16 bit color in 3D (note: a Voodoo3 CAN do 32 bit color in 2D, like your desktop and web browsing). Still, for those who aren't looking for the latest in technology, the Voodoo3 does give great images and very nice compatibility with nearly any game or program out there, even older ones that do not run well with the newest video cards. There does seem to be problems with installation if you had previously had a Voodoo card and have a hard time uninstalling previous drivers, but as this was my first Voodoo card, I had no problems whatsoever. Don't bother with the T.V. out, it's nothing really that special. Finally, I liked this card because it worked with my older Aptiva computer. The new cards really work best with the newest hardware which also should include a power source of at least 200 watts. Despite running quite hot, this card worked just fine with a computer that was powered as low as 145 watts-something that was woefully inadequate with the newer cards. Don't expect miracles or pretend that the voodoo3 3000 can do more. It is after all, a generation behind in technology, but what it can do, it does quite well.
excellent video card. top choice!

In brief, the Voodoo3 is a 2D/3D Voodoo2, but faster. It doesn't do anything particularly novel (there's a tv output, but no texture compression or bump-mapping, for example), but it's extremely quick for the money, and sure to become cheaper as the Voodoo5 gains a foothold. It's a better bet than the 2000 - it's faster, has a TV-out (which you will probably never use, but it's nice to know that you can), and isn't much more expensive. Comparing it with the 3500 is tricky, however - whilst the 3500 is fractionally quicker, it's sold more on its multimedia capabilities. The lack of 32-bit colour is a shame - in the games that support it, the visual gains are noticeable, but it hits performance, and is only essential if you're playing the 32-bit only 'Delta Force 2'. As others have noted, it gets quite warm in operation, but you don't really need a fan - just ensure that your PCI cards are distanced from the AGP socket.
