Aging but still good 2004-12-06
This game has definitely been around for awhile, but there's a reason it's still played. It's fun! The interface is easy to use, and the 'tech tree' aspect is fairly simple so that even people who haven't played other rts games should have to trouble learning it.

There are a couple of downsides to this game, though in my opinion they aren't much of an issue. One is of course that the graphics are definitely aging and nothing spectacular. It's nice to be able to quickly recognize your units so that you can make the best use of them (high detail can get in the way of that) but don't expect the graphics to wow you. Also, this game runs on a 2D engine, rather than the 3D engine that more recent games are using.

Secondly is that I wasn't incredibly impressed by the campaigns. They tend to get a little repetitive, so most of the time I find myself just playing a custom game.

Another similar game I might recommend instead of this one would be Starcraft. The graphics are slightly better, and the game is just as interesting. Then of course there is Warcraft III out now, which has a 3D engine and a couple of additional races besides human and orc. Aside from the things I mentioned, this game really is very good. I've been playing it for years and haven't gotten tired of it yet!

Best Game Ever- period! 2004-04-06
Warcraft2 is an awesome game that has been around a lomg time...a classic. While some say that its graphics are aging, I love the undetailed, squat Orcs, among other things. Welcme to the World of Warcraft!!!

RTS legend. 2004-03-21
This game is the first RTS game that I have played along with Starcraft and Lords of the Realm 2. But Lords of the Realm 2 (Starcraft is a whole diffrent stoty) didn't have what Warcraft had. The easy to get used to gameplay with great graphics in terms of running smooth, the very low system requirement, and the satisfaction of the Battle.net. I have not played this game since 2000 (Because my dad broke my CD. Read my Starcraft Battle Chest review.) so I don't know if anyone plays online now but all I know is that I had the most fun playing this game back in 2000. I remember the satisfaction that I had with my friends after beating the opponent with my ogres and the dragons. This game ran fine when I used to have Intel Celeron 400MHZ, 64mb ram, and 56k modem. So if you get this game right now, you shouldn't have any technical problems. Also this game is very easy to get used to with easy gameplay and great graphics for an outdated game. This game is definitly a must have if you are a RTS fan. You should know that Warcraft started it all. It started the great RTS gaming genre.

Great game, but avoid BattleNet 2004-03-16
I have been playing Warcraft II for many, many years, and absolutely love it. I finally decided to pick up the BattleNet addition of the game so I could play online against people from around the world. What a terrible mistake that was...

Unfortunately, BattleNet is nothing more than a haven for depraved, foul mouthed adolescents hell bend on making your online experience as miserable as possible. The unrelenting flood of obscenities, personal attacks, and graphic content, makes the game completely inappropriate for younger players, and intolerable for older ones. You don't even have to be playing a game to be accosted, it starts immediately in the main page chat window, as soon as you connect to the service.

This really is a shame, because this is such a great game, and a relatively small group of people have completely ruined it for everyone. There seem to be far fewer troublemakers on the games that charge a monthly fee, so hopefully Blizzard's new venture into online gaming, coming soon, I hope, will be better.

Despite being a great game, I cannot recommend this version....

The Essential Strategy Game 2003-12-09
This is perhaps one of the best games of all time. The gameplay is well-balanced and simple, but the game is suitable for all skill levels. If you are interested in Real-Time Strategy but don't want to spend too much money, this is a great starter game. It does lack a few features of newer strategy games, but the improvements made from the original version make it almost as good as Starcraft (another excellent game all genre newbies should consider getting). The graphics are dated, but considering that the original game came out in 1995, they are impressive. This was not the Game of the Year of 1995 for no reason. Even if you already have Warcraft 2, consider buying this for Battle.net alone. At 8.99, it's definitely worth the multiplayer social and gaming experience. Everyone should own this game.

A Classic RTS 2008-04-02
Although I didn't really have a chance to play Warcraft that much, if at all, when it was in its hayday I have recently rediscovered this classic and have found msyself becoming addicted. Warcaft 2, much like the previous installment in the series, is a real-time strategy game in which you must chose to play as either the orcs or the humans in a bid to become ruler of the land and in this sequel, the seas and oceans. The gameplay may seem simple at first, especially to gamers who are used to more modern games. However, once you move past the first couple of stages, the game does begin to challange the player with a mixture of maintaing a city and trying to acomplish a set of objectives. While several other games have worked with this concept, few have ever perfected like Blizzard did with the original Warcraft games. Also, what makes picking up the Battle.net edition worth it is that you get both Warcraft 2 and you also get it's expansion pack on one disc. The game also has the option of free multiplayer, but have yet to try this option out. So, whether your looking for a bit of nestolgic gameplay or just looking for an alternative to the repetive nature of today's games, give Warcraft 2 a try.

Great RTS Game 2008-02-27
I don't own this game, but have played it in school. I haven't played the campaign missions, but have played multiplayer almost everyday for 2 months. The graphics are dated, but that isn't where the fun is. For me it is the fast paced-ness of the game that keeps me hooked. Unlike most RTSs I have played, each misson doesn't have to take an hour and a half to complete. If you know how to build, it can take you 5 minutes to defeat a game aginst a single computer opponent. You can also build crazily, and go like that, or you can develop a strategy and either way, you stand a chance of winning.

My suggestion for those just starting: 1 build your hall and 4 or five farms while cranking out peons/pesants like crazy. Then build 3 barracks and make another town near another gold mine. Don't stop building peons unless you are running out of money.

Waecraft 2 an AMAZING game! 2006-08-05
I havent played this game in 6 years and Im trying to get it again although I have Warcraft 3 I love Warcraft 2 more and I can't find it but that won't stop me from getting it. That's how much I love Warcraft 2 and that's how good it is. My favourite part of this game is the Battle net. because your not playing against dumb old computers but some skilled players. That's why I love Warcraft 2 Battle net. aside from the trash talk. I would suggest highly getting this game because you don't know what your missing! seriously.

One of my all time favorite RTS games ever 2005-04-29
Although Warcraft 3 and its expansion have come out within the last few years, I still prefer Warcraft 2 a bit more. Yes the game looks kinda dated now, but it is still a blast to play. The game was fun in that it never got too complicated or anything so that newcomers could always have a good time. The map editor was easy to use and the online play in the Battle.net edition will keep you busy for a while. Anyways, if you've only played Warcraft 3 then it might be difficult for you to enjoy this game since it is so old, but if your willing to look past the graphics then you'll find a real gem.

Oops 2004-12-13
Great game. It looks like amazon actually posted a screenshot of warcraft I: Orcs and Humans, instead of a picture from this game.
