Editorial Review
The original Unreal was a hit, setting new standards for acceptable eye candy in first-person shoot-'em-ups. With improved networking, better weapons, and fantastic maps, Unreal Tournament now unleashes unmatched multiplayer mayhem, proving it's more than just the legacy of a pretty face. Focusing on creating a highly competitive online environment, Unreal Tournament has a solid death-match mode, but also delivers three extremely satisfying variants. Capture the Flag (steal your opponents' flag, defend your own), Domination (capture and control defined areas for points), and Assault (storm a base, then defend it) breathe new life into online multiplayer battles and create gripping team-play situations. Over 50 arenas are provided, from ancient alien temples to high-speed trains. If a new map becomes popular, Unreal Tournament is smart enough to download it (or any new-player "skins") automatically. The hassle-free multiplayer is further enhanced by the in-game browser that allows you to find online matchups quickly and painlessly. The single-player game acts as a highly effective training environment, allowing you to master the wicked weaponry while surviving the frighteningly smart "bots." On top of it all, Unreal Tournament is still one great-looking game, delivering a big bang for your buck. --Jack Gardiner

Unable to write a review 2008-04-06
I'm unable to write a review because I wasn't able to find a way how to run this game on Mac OS X Leopard - it's Tiger-only :-)

And it begins... 2003-04-07
I wanted to see what the hype was about. I bought the game hoping to see why every game out there uses the Unreal Engine. And then I found out why. And I really liked it. It's fast, it's amazingly addictive, no wonder it's so popular!

Also, it's fun to blow stuff up in a video game.

addictive, awesome online gaming 2003-02-19
I've had this game for my Mac for about one year now, and I am still very happy and play often.

The game itself is very big, there are deathmatch, capture the flag, assault etc... and yeah there are alot of MOD's out there for this game still around, the number of servers are getting smaller for the more specialized games, as of Feb 2003, probly because people are switching over to the newly released UT 2003, but if you havent bought and played this game yet, don't worry, there are around 1500-2000 servers up and running still for this version of the game. (capture the flag and deathmatch servers being the most popular.

-Deathmatch, usually online around 8-12 players in one map, and just kill and see who gets the most kills, usually ones the best connection.
-Capture the Flag, simple enough, two flags, two teams 8-12, players per team, and you bring the enemy flag over to your flag, for a score.
-(havent really played the other game modes, these two alone will keep you busy)

Besides the MODs there are specific servers which run only certain weapons, Sniper Rifle, Insta-gib (one shot kills) Assault Rifle) and of course most run all weapons. Most servers run a different assortment of Maps or Levels so try different servers for more variety.

I have an Indigo Imac, 400mhg with the 8mg video ram, yeah I know :-( but I have found a few servers that are always up and running with players and I get good frame rates on, (with DSL connection)

for the price this purchase is really a no brainer, its an old game, but there are plenty of people who will be playing it for awhile longer.... have fun...

Combat excells, Team play iffy 2002-02-14
The way I see it is the following: Quake gets a quad damage railgun shot to unreals head as far as graphics go. And Quake Team Arena gets a Kamakazi at point blank with a couple dozen mines sitting behind Unreal as far as team play goes...

But then Ureal starts fighting back:

Random combat, Unreal headshots Quake with their all powerfull sniper rifle. LAN games, Unreal drops a flak grenade on their head... S'just that simple. I spent a few hours trying to figure out how to set up a lan game with Quake, and eventualy gave up. Unreal was easy.

Unreal also plays on more general range of hardware than Quake, which goes along with losing some graphics. But S'ok, who needs ultimate eye candy when you have a Bio Sludge flinging weapon?

The Team play of Unreal... Frankly bites, the engine just doesnt work for CTF at all, any camper with a sniper rifle or rocket launcher can take you out in one hit, and translocater kills are too easy to pull off for my tastes. But regardless, the combat picks up the slack as far as I'm concerned.

Unreal Tournament, it's GREAT! 2002-01-29
Unreal Tournament is a game where you, blow guts up! You pick from lots of different species and skins! There is different cool kinds of gameplay in it! There is Tournament Deathmatch, Tournament Team Deathmatch, Domination, Assision, Capture The Flag, or Last Man Standing, all have like at least 10 different maps to play. Tournament Deathmatch, Tournament Team Deathmatch, and Last Man Standing is all the same maps. Tournament Deathmatch-Basically, blow anyone up that is standing! Tournament Team Deathmatch-You play 4 teams, Green, Blue, Red, and Gold, blow up the other team! Domination-You have to teams, Red and Blue, and you try to get 3 different places, and if you get 1 plus what ever you put deaths on, you win. Asission- Two teams, one defending a base, or a object, one trying to destory it. If you can do it, then the other team gets the same time as you, and face off. -Capter the flag, two teams, red and blue and trying to get the other team's flag, but it's hard because it's way back in the other base, try to survive, almost imposible. So many points of getting the flag to your base, and you win! Last Man Standing-you get every weapon but two, and try to kill each other, you get a certain number of lives that you choose. You also get 200 live!
All that plus 13 different weapons!
~Chainsaw-You only get this if you check, "Chainsaw Melee" and you can rip other peoples head off!
~Translocater-You need to check "Translocater" to get this, you basically teleport, and if you teleport really close to someone, you can kill them by, "Telefraggin' them!
~Impact Hammer-No ammo, you always have this, if you go by someone with this, you can shoot guts everywhere!
~Enforcer-Like a hand gun, you start out with this gun and 30 ammo.
~Biosluge Gun-You take a gun, and use toxic sluge to kill people, warning, it can kill you too!
~ASMD Shock Rifle-You use a eletrick shock rifle to kill people!
~Pulse Gun-Like ASMD Shock Rifle, but more shooting, more ammo, and it's green not blue shooting.
~Ripper-A gun take shoots razor blades out!
~Minigun-A gun that is very weak, but shoots out like 50 bullets in 2 seconds!
~Flak Cannon-Lots of little, or one big yellow shock ball hits you, does huge damage.
~Rocket Loncher-Shot out lots of rocket with this rocket loncher!
~Sniper Rifle-Get a closer view on this! Shoot the head, it "pops" out!
~Redeemer-A super-rocket loncher, shoots out 1 mini nuclear bomb!
Now, how could you resist this, plus you can go online and play, make or download maps, skins, and get version 436!Grapics/Looking Animation, great job on this one! 10/10
Fun, what can't be fun about this game?! 10/10
Gameplay/Movieplay, it lasts a long time. 9.5/10
Sound, I don't like the music that much. 4/10
Overall, you NEED to get this game! 9/10 which is awesome on my scale, and a big 5 stars at amazon.com!

Excellent Engine 2001-10-10
I've used both Unreal Tournament and Quake 3 Arena extensively, and Unreal Tournament definitely comes out on top. In my experience, Unreal Tournament gets much higher framerates, yet has far more beautiful graphics than Quake 3 Arena could ever hope to achieve, even on the highest settings (I've tried). With an extensive array of 3rd party addons available online ..., Unreal Tournament's gameplay is endless.

I've lost more Hours... 2001-08-14
I tried demo versions of both Quake III Arena and Unreal Tournament when they first came out. I had to make a choice, couldn't justify buying both. I chose UT. I am planning on buying the GOTY edition soon also. This GAME steals more time from me than anything I have ever done. It is smoother than Quake III Arena, better looking, and easier to control. I can only say that I will never doubt GT Interactive titles (I guess it is Infogrames now). If you are looking for the BEST FPS you can get for Classic Mac OS, this is it.

A Good Time for All! 2001-07-09
Unreal Tournament is one great game! As far as first person shooters are concerned on the Mac, UT is the champion! Great graphics, great gameplay... this game has it all. I originally used this on my iMac 233mhz with a Gamewizard Voodoo2 card installed and it ran fantastic. Now I'm on the same iMac, but with a 466mhz processor and averaging 40+ frames per second on the game! There is no real storyline here, but this isn't the type of game that requires one. This is all about pure action! The levels that come bundled in with Unreal Tournament are great, but once you start to add on 3rd party levels from the Internet, the game really takes flight. I have found some incredibly detailed levels that will keep you engrossed for hours on end! If you want a fun game that can even be played across the Internet then Unreal Tournament is the game for you!

UT Rocks 2001-04-15
My father won't let me play this game but I have played it before and the way it thinks of every last detail is great. My favorite level it Deck 16 but every level could be my favorite its just so good.
