Great tool but has a minor flaw
2007-05-15
I love this tool. So easy to use. But mine was a little off regarding the distance between the plumb line and the reference mark. It's supposed to be 2" but mine was 2 1/16". Not a big deal. Other than that it is very well made and operates flawlessly.
Best Plumb Bob I've Ever Used

This is a great plumb bob! Not only is the string housed in a box (no more cumbersome wrapping the string around a nail), it is also retractable. No more getting the bob set only to find that I misjudged the distance; now I can just raise the bob the amount needed without any unwrapping and rewrapping. A sharp pin attaches it temporarily to a wood stud/joist; a magnet will hold it securely on steel studs. Other bob weights are available. Well worth the purchase if you're going to do any framing or other plumb work.
Does what I need!

Works very well. I especially liked having the alternate drop point being right next to the mounting edge, great for dropping a vertical from a joist. You tap it in using the built in "nail" and then loop the retractable string over the hang point that's flush with the base and you've got a vertical from the joist to the floor. I'm working on finishing a basement and it's come in quite handy. Nice sharp point as well that comes with a protective cover. Makes it easy to leave a definite mark without resorting to a pencil but won't cut you when not in use as long as you remember to put the cap back on. But do be careful - it is a sharp point! Can't compare it to others of its type because I've never used one quite this "fancy" with a retractable string and a built in "nail" and the ability to work with different weight bob loads. Probably way more than I really needed for the job but very easy to use as a result - no pounding nails in every joist and then taking them back out - it's all in this one unit.
doesn't do all it states it can do

i recently purchased the plumb-rite plumb bob setter and was disappointment in the fact that this unit doesn't settle in the a reasonable amount of time. i was setting a door frame and the plumb bob took more than 3 minutes to settle down to a steady position which is normally unacceptable for a carpenter to wait for. time is money in the home building business. once it settle down then it was a decent unit for plumbing a door frame.
works great so far ....

like others I wish it were built of better material. But for the price it can't be beat.

Nice tool. Easy to use with pin and recoil feature. Used to frame some basement walls. Hang from joists and using 0 out pin feature, spot location of walls was a snap. Hanging drywall, used to spot stud locations for screw shooting. Bob rests quickly as stated. Only real dowside is lightweight plastic cover could be beefed up some or made out of aluminum or steel.
Just what I needed, and it works great!

After seeing this tool on This Old House I knew that if it worked as shown it would come in handy for the 10 new doors I was putting up during my remodel. It does work just like they showed on TV and on the box!
All ten doors went up faster and with no problems. If you need to make sure that something is plumb over a tall span, then this is your tool. It will be a permanent fixture in my tool chest from now on.
master journeyman's working man review

This is a extremely fast working man's tool, strong magnet easily holds the bob on even the lightest gauge framing. I have used the pin mount on wood, & is as strong as well. Drive it, pull it out. 28 years in the trade, this makes the day go alot smoother.
more accurate than a level to plum things

I used one of these a few years ago. I kept borrowing it from a co-worker. I finally decided to get my own. It may take a bit longer to set up than just using a level, but the results are dead on.
great
