Editorial Review
The D-Link DSS-5+ is a powerful desktop Dual Speed 5-port 10/100Mb Ethernet/Fast Ethernet NWay auto-negotiating Switch. Designed to bring switching to the desktop, the DSS-5+ delivers high speed switching capabilities at the lowest cost per port in the industry. It functionally eliminates unnecessary traffic and relieves data congestion by delivering dedicated bandwidth for each of the five ports. An individual port can connect to either an Ethernet or Fast Ethernet device. NWay auto-negotiation automatically determines the transmission speed of the attached device on each port. The DSS-5+ provides dynamic buffer allocation that employs network-load balancing for faster data handling. The uplink interface connection enables easy expansion. The DSS-5+ uses fast store and forward architecture to ensure low latency and high data integrity. It supports stacking though the MDI II uplink RJ-45 connection that is shared with port 1 for flexible media connection and expansion capabilities.

Good reliable switch 2008-08-05
This switch is absolutely fantastic for what you pay for. This switch has extremely low latency when using it as well as a small kinda compact design. The only gripe I have about this switch is that it uses a power cable, and the power cable included isnt really long enough in my opinion.

It works! 2008-02-16
Hurrah! Not much to report except that it's as painless as technology will ever get. You plug it in and now you have more ports. Success!

Works great 2007-10-24
I've been using this switch non-stop ever since I bought it years ago and it has been fully functional.

Excellent Low Priced Switch for Home and Office 2007-08-18
I have typically been a Linksys only customer, but being frustrated with some of their products lately I decided to make a switch, and I'm glad I did. It's compact design makes it easy to tuck it away. I have yet to have a problem with the 2 that I bought, one for home and one for work. They have been running 6 months and counting with all the ports active in both locations.

Very nice Data Switch 2006-07-10
The 5 port switch works great. Unfortunately I needed five ports that I could use. This unit only has 4 ports availible. The fifth port is tied to the dsl modem. If you only need 4 ports, this unit is great.

Great box, great price 2005-10-04

Excellent 5-Port 10/100 Switch 2005-08-22
I've been using this switch non-stop for over two years now and have never had any kind of problem. It's a great little switch that's definitely worth the money. All the ports are in the back, the casing has a brushed aluminum look, and it's fanless, so it's definitely possible to leave it sitting on the desk. Since the "switching fabric" supports 1GB/sec, that means each of the five ports can carry their full 200MB/sec (100MB/sec each way) capacity without problem. The darn thing doesn't even get warm. Definitely a good buy (I rate it at 5 stars out of 5).

One note: If I were to buy another switch today, I'd probably go for the 10/100/1000 version of the same switch (the D-Link DGS-1005D). Darn near every computer sold these days has a Gigabit Ethernet connection built into it. So, having that switch would most likely let people take advantage of the added speed on their local networks (assuming they had Cat 5e or Cat 6 cabling -- however, it wouldn't make any difference across the internet since only a rare few cable modem even connect at 100Mb/sec and I don't know of any that connect at 1 GB/sec). But, since that switch costs about twice as much as this one, there's a bit of a trade-off.

Small, simple but reliable 2002-05-28
I have had this equipment for a year now. In the past 11 months I have used it at my home network with an ISDN connection, but last month we upgraded to ADSL and the result is even better.
My home is in Guatemala City and on this small country we have plenty of communication technology that makes this kind of services posible.
Again, is the best equipment your money can buy, zero problems. I really recomend it.

Sweetest little switch! 2002-01-22
I have been replacing my ethernet hubs with switches (because the throughput on a switch is much better than on a hub). After extensive review, I decided to get one D-Link 5-port switch and one Netgear 5-port switch, both auto-sensing for 10/100 rate. The truth is, they both work great! They both perform well, and were equally easy to hookup (no software to deal with). I will add one thing, and that is that the D-Link box was a much nicer design than the Netgear. First of all, it is much smaller (the picture of the D-Link here is deceiving). Secondly, the Netgear has the LED lights and the ethernet ports on the same side. For my setup, I prefer the ports on the back and the lights on the front. I think the Netgear switch was fashioned more for a rack. Style aside, a big thumbs up for both of these switches!

I will have to return this for the third time soon... 2001-10-13
The very first one of these I got was the new fan-less design. It worked great for about a year but then it fried one of its ports AND took out my 3Com network card at the same time. :-(

I called and D-Link replaced the switch for free (but of course wouldn't even send me one of their 10/100 cards to replace the 3Com), but the replacement I got is one of the older "with fan" units.

The problem? The fan is now making a horrible noise/rattle but has not actually failed as of yet, so I doubt D-Link would replace it again until the fan actually died...

Bottom line - great product, reliability is a bit suspect, though, and I'm a bit unhappy they replaced my newer unit with a refurbed "Rev. A" unit...
