Super Duper Arcade 1. With excellent graphics, topnotch sound, and an elegantly designed interface, this quartet of easy-to-learn challenges evokes classic games from
Space Invaders to
Lemmings.
Super Duper Arcade 1 combines four games from Humongous Entertainment's Junior Arcade series. In Balloon-O-Rama, a talking car named Putt-Putt and his canine sidekick Pep team up to pop ranks of wayward balloons. In Water Worries, Freddi Fish must rescue watery friends trapped in bubbles--and he must do it before the water level falls below the comfort zone! Sockworks challenges players to help Pajama Sam operate large and complex sock-sorting machinery. Finally, Cheese Chase is aimed at a slightly older player. The most challenging and the only arguably violent game (secret agent SPY Fox shoots plumber's helpers and bananas at fleeing criminals) uses Rocky and Bullwinkle-influenced graphics to set a lone investigator on the chase for a cheese thief.
One of the coolest features of Super Duper Arcade 1 is the ability to design customized levels. This imposes a new degree of analytical thinking on devoted players of the games, while creating opportunities for children to cooperate on level creation. Customizing this way also means that the fun never ends--even after an arcade wizard has played every one of the hundreds of levels offered by these four terrific games, they can always design more. --Alyx Dellamonica
