2000-06-10The Palm VII is my first PDA (unless you can consider the Nokia 9000 a PDA) and I don't regret the $ that I shelled out to get this. It is worth EVERY cent. You may need this soon if you are: in college or working, somewhat always on the go, constantly running out of post-its, have deadlines to beat, tired of lugging around a laptop, or just simply, need to stay organized. But hey, that's the whole idea of owning a PDA.
Even if you're not that much of an Internet user, the wireless services turn this PDA into an essential everyday device. It doesn't have its own browser, so you won't be able to key in URLs as you would on Netscape or IE- instead, you use web clippings that are pre-installed on the Palm VII which allow you to simply drag and pull information off the Internet. Picture this- you wake up and need to get dressed for the day- get the weather forecast to pick the right get-up, you get in the car to head off for a meeting and need directions- key in your starting address and the destination and you'll get step by step driving instructions, on the way, send out last minute E-mails to the office, etc. etc.
Everything you need to get started is right in the box, and signing up for the wireless services took me a grand total of three minutes. There are a great number of resources out there, so if you need to add pre-installed web clippings, it only takes a while to do so.
I only have minor complaints. Palm should come out with a lithium ion rechargeable battery for this unit. The transmitter uses up a lot of battery space. Also, the monthly service should be made a little lower. If you're a heavy user, you can pretty much use up the 50KB ($9 a month) in a matter of two days.
All in all, this is a great product and will change the way you live your life. You deserve to have this!
Too much money

Take a look at HPJornada for 500 bucks. It is in color with same functionality and 8 times more RAM. Wireless access burns batteries fast and it is outrageously expensive. Monochromatic screen drives me crazy. Should have bought HP.
Stop reading this and buy a Palm VII NOW !

What an incredible device. I have literally been waiting adecade for a wireless net-ready PDA. Remember those old "Youwill" ads from AT+T? heheheh.. Well now, I _AM_! The cell modem is faster than I expected, the unlimited volume Palm.net service plan is wonderful, and the available software is great. Definitely get Digital Paths' DPWeb DX web browser, which opens up much of the WWW to your Palm VII. I cannot express how cool the Palm VII is. I am completely impressed. If you are thinking of going wireless PDA, the Palm VII is probably your best bet right now.
Palm VII is a great productivity tool...

I've had my Palm VII since Feb 2000. With the unlimited access I use my Palm all the time to do nearly all of my main computer-related tasks. My laptop and computer setups at home now become support tools for my computing needs. The Palm VII has become my primary tool. The wireless feature allows me to get my email in 30 seconds from flip the antenna to email-viewed.... if you want to see your email fast, this is the way to do it. I have a my company and all other email accounts forward a copy to my Palm email address.... I end up reading the Palm mail and deleting the originals. If I find that I've been sent an attachment, I then know that I need to go to my original account to go get it.
I have 3 types of apps that I bought for the Palm VII: HandDbase, MultimailPro, and Quickbase... this allows me to create databases, send email with attachments and create Excel-compatible spreadsheets. MultimailPro's ability to send and receive attachments makes it possible to create, send and receive memos, spreadsheets and databases to/from the Palm wirelessly!! Eliminating the need for you to go buy a PocketPC to do the same... and Wirelessly!
Finally, several wireless Web-page browsers for the Palm VII are out there. I use DPWeb.. adequate-- not Explorer--- but I'm not complaining.
Only thing I'd like to do but can't quite yet is pay my bills wirelessly through the web... I'm sure we'll see this in the future.

I had the III for a long time but just had to make the jump to the VII.
It does everything I want and let's me get more stuff faster from Amazon from the road and it even works in the air on planes (not sure the FAA or seat back phone companies will like that, though).
It's fantastic. The only downside is the wireless is somewhat slow and expensive but it's really v1.0

This used to be a great device. However, as of Aug. 31, 2004, Palm is discontinuing their Palm.Net wireless service. As the Palm VII cannot be reconfigured to use a different service, the vast majority of its functionality is now gone. If you just need a basic handheld, the Palm VII will still work in this capacity, but there are other devices which work just as well for a lower cost.
unless you own stock in Duracell forget it

this was the second Palm I owned, and was a closeout model, and it was terrible. Battery life is non-existent unless one week counts. In fact was away from unit for a week and not only were the batteries completely dead, but lost all data. I love the convenience of a PDA, just not THIS PDA

Product works great. It replaces one that I had for 2 years which I dropped and shattered the screen on. I ordered from the vendor on Friday afternoon. On the next Monday morning the PDA was delivered to my office, with a new set of alkalines installed. I was synched up within 5 minutes of opening the box! Great service from the vendor..at regular ground shipping rates. "Thanks"

This is a great product. I loved it from day one, and I have been using for about 1 1/2 years now. It may take a week or two to get used to handwriting if you have never done it on any other device before, but once that hurdle is passed, it is a minature computer at the palm of your hand!
Hmm...

This has the potential to be a good device, but lost a lot. The palm VII can connect to the internet with pretty good rates, but the most it can do is webclipping apps, like Wall Street Journal. While it can probably do more if you connect using a manual connection, you have to go through a lot. Also nagging is the fact that it only has 2mb of memory, not allowing you to store lots of programs. However, this can be a good thing, because you don't load lots of useless programs on. The contrast nobbie in the back got annoying because it was hard to use, but it never got accidentally adjusted like the palm Vx could.
The palm VII is for the net user, but if you aren't going to use it for the internet, buy an m100, same as this only round and modem-free. (I happen to like the boxy shape of the VII.)
