Works quite well 2007-09-11
We have two Hunter fans with remotes. We purchased the remotes separately both times and they work really nice. It is really nice to just sit in bed and turn the fan off or on as desired. As one of the fans is right over the bed, there is no need to reach or climb or anything. We are very pleased.

Chaotic control 2007-07-14
Since the operative idea is to have control over the fan, having the fan go on in the middle of the night for no apparent reason is aggravating. Is it the neighbor's garage door opener? The government's time signal? Minor fluctuations in the quality of electricity coming into the house? Unknown. It's summer, and the weather is mild, yet the fan will come on spontaneously, as will the light, which is a sleep killer in the middle of the night. The only solution is to turn the fan off at the switch, which means that if you WANT the fan on during the night, you'll have to live with the light coming on at 3a.m.

Bad design, from an engineer who didn't field test the product.

By the way, it's the same with the Hunter fans that come with the remote control units.

Works like a charm! 2007-06-11
We installed fo of these in 3 existing fan and one new installation. My not-so-handy man managed to get them working in less than 30 minutes in the existing fans, including having to loosen the fan canopy.

They've been up about 7 months now and we've had no problems at all. It's really made a huge difference since we run our fans 24 hours a day for most of the year to save on heating and cooling in this unbearable climate (110* 90% humidity summer, 30* winter).

Can't recommend them highly enough!

Lights go on and off at will - common problem 2007-06-04
This, and the 27186 (same receiver unit), have the same problem with lights going on and off at will. It's real fun to have this happen at 3am when you're trying to sleep. The receiver is very susceptible to RF interference, which is what makes the thing go bonkers. There was no way I was going to take down the fan to muck with the channel settings, I just pulled the darn thing out and returned it.

I replaced the remote with a Hampton Bay model that we've used for years in another fan without any issues. The HB remote in the same fan I previously installed the Hunter in now works with ZERO problems, no more lights going on and off. Fit better in the canopy as well.

Hit or miss, I guess... 2007-05-26
We own four of these units and one of a different style and have had them all for 3+ years. Of the four, Hunter 27185's, three have performed flawlessly. The fourth, similar to other reviews listed, acts-up frequently. The light comes on whenever it wants, even after multiple frequency changes. The fan, "obeys," the control, but the light has a mind of its own. I like the Hunter units better than the competitor control we have, but would purchase from someplace that allows worry-free, returns. Keep returning units until you get a good one... Good luck.

fan control 2008-04-06
should not be sold with fans that come with compact flow lamps...ok for incandesent lamps only..needs to be made in usa also...i dont trust china products..

Possessed 2008-03-10
This item is possessed. Go over to epinions and read about it. Fan comes on and off at random times, mostly inconvenient times (while your trying to sleep). Changing the frequency dip switches involves unmounting the fan (thats right, getting up on a ladder and taking it down again). I actually have installed 100 fans in my life, and holding up a fan in one hand while changing a dip switch with the other is somewhat of a challenge :). Now that the dip switches are changed, VIOLA...still interference. I think I may try to cut the receiver wire this time to shorten the range, as it may be getting interference from down the street, or solar flares, or the gremlins that live in my attic.

Easy as 1,2 -3 2007-12-29
I was not sure if this thing would function well, but boy not only is it great having it on the wall so it doesn't get lost it works better than expected and it was "easy" to install

Unhappy with Reliability 2007-10-10
Gripe #1: Poor Product Reliability. My first unit had been installed by the previous homeowner. Within a year of our moving in, the fan/light stopped working. I assumed it was a random failure and bought an exact replacement #27185. Using the new remote, I confirmed that it was the old receiver that had died.

After installing the new receiver (not easy on a cathedral ceiling), everything worked as before. Thankfully, I did not need to toy with the DIP switches. As an added bonus, we now had an extra remote. Nevertheless, a few months later, the new receiver stopped working too. At this point I had two working remotes, two dead receivers, and zero interest in installing another #27185. I did complain to the company, and their solution (of course) was to offer me another receiver. No thanks.

Gripe #2: Inconvenient/Archaic Design. I also experienced 'unattended' turn-ons with the #27185. The light would *always* turn on following any power interruption; this behavior was so consistent that I assumed it was a design 'feature'. I rarely had problems with RF interference. However, the mechanism provided for solving such problems (flipping DIP switches on both the transmitter and *highly-inaccessible* receiver) is archaic and extremely inconvenient. Nowadays, even the cheapest consumer products (consider a typical cordless phone or baby monitor) have provisions for selecting alternate frequencies without resorting to DIP switches.

Alternative Product: I considered buying the similarly-priced Hampton Bay remote, but poor reviews convinced me that it would probably be no better than the Hunter. I have now settled on the more expensive Lutron Maestro. If it saves me the aggravation of ever replacing another canopy module, it will have been worth it. The Maestro is not susceptible to RF interference and has no DIP switches. The IR remote (strictly line-of-sight) communicates with a sensor integrated into the wallplate. The wallplate module communicates with the control unit through the existing wiring (probably similar to X10). As with the Hunter and Hampton Bay controls, the control unit needs to be wired into the canopy enclosure. This placement seems unavoidable in two-wire installations.
