Just Grandma & Me
2007-12-03
Just Grandma and Me CD-Rom -- I have triplet 4 year old children plus a 3 year child. They all love reading the book Just Grandma & me. When the CD-Rom arrived and they saw it on the computer, each child had a great time either just listening to the story being told to them or interacting with the story or playing with the sand on the beach. It was a great purchase and I know the children will be able to do even more with this CD like learning the words and reading. By watching the CD, they can now read the book to me!!!!!! Highly recommend.
Works on XP some hints!

Well I was afraid when I installed it, because like other reviewers it stops when you press some objects in the game. Found the solution right click on the icon for the game. Choose properties then choose to run it on windows 2000! It works no problem. Its a fun story and you can make fun sand castles in the game. Its great for little kids my son is 3 and other games are to hard for him even blues goes to school. This is a nice game for children under 3, older than that they will play it once and then leave it on the shelf.
Great for foreign language learning

We just received our copy of Just Grandma and Me software by Mercer Mayer and The Learning Company. This and several other CD-ROM titles by Mercer Mayer can be played in several languages including German, perfect for our bilingual family! My two-year-old listened to it about 4 times in his first session. The story is straightforward and leaves nice pauses between sentences so mom or dad can repeat or explain if necessary. These titles would be great for elementary school age kids as well.
Just make sure if you're running Windows XP to get the latest version. I highly recommend this game/read-aloud storybook.
A brilliant story for kids everywhere

I teach English as a second language to Chinese children and the CD-ROM is a real boon to me. I have used it with kids of ages 4-11 years, even the adults love it. The characters and content have universal appeal and the 'story' is very simple.
Great computer game!

This was the first computer game my son ever played and many years and many programs later it is still one of the best. It is simple enough for a 3 year old to play with no assistance, yet engaging enough for older kids to enjoy too. Highly recommended!
One Of The Best Cd-Roms My Kids Have Ever Played.

In this endearing story, Little Critter and his Grandma spend a day at the beach where Little Critter rides a windblown umbrella, fends off a nasty crab, goes snorkeling and much more!
Features interactive, unique teaching tools that can talk and play with your child in a way those traditional, one-dimensional books cannot.
doesn't run well on XP

The book runs on my XP machine, but not well. It reads through and I can click all the words and hear the pronouciation, but it crashes when I click certain "clickables." I try it on a older machine (windows 98) and it works perfectly. A wonderful kids story, however, and I am using it to teach my 5 year old to read.
Recommended if you can downgrade. Otherwise, your kid will get upset very soon if it crashes all the time.
Excellent for 3 year old beginners!

This game is paced exactly right for pre-schoolers. My daughter learned how to manipulate the mouse with this game and still finds all the surprises in the book interesting (time and time again!). If you are looking for a place to start with your child on the computer, "Just Grandma and Me" is an excellent and fun way to do it.
A Warm Story

The reader reads this Mercer Mayer classic at a very slow pace. There are some cute surprises as the child clicks on parts of the drawings (mailbox opens, birds flutter etc.) and there is a limited sand castle building component among the choices, but I found the CD to be relatively slow as compared to other early learning CD's. The surprise was my grand daughter's reaction. This was one of her most frequently chosen items when we sat down to the computer together. Now 4 and more interrested in her alphabet and skills, the CD sits unchosen but it was probably her favorite at ages 2 and 3!
Sentimental favorite

Just Grandma and Me was the first CD we happened to get for our not yet-2 y.o., who was of course too young to manipulate it. But we played with it together, and by "with" I mean it is not a game but a sort of enhanced flap book, where random object yield unexpected treats. The programs plays music, displays amusing animations, and so on. Most of all it's just simple fun, but also the most touching of the Just... series.
This is an easy choice as a straightforward and inexpensive title for younger children. Our 6 y.o. gets a kickk out of playing with it sometimes, though, and his 3 y.o. younger brother can manipulate it easily. A final note, I do wish this publisher and others had continued to include multilingual support -- here English, French, German, and in an earlier version Japanese -- and additional cost must be minimal, and it's really fun to hear the different renditions. If your first language is one of these "other" languages, you might prefer it for that reason as well.
