R-RATED Theatrical Cut, NOT UNRATED!!!!
2008-07-25
The listing for this product is WRONG! For some reason, this is the R-RATED theatrical cut and not the UNRATED Director's Cut that appeared on DVD and VHS so many years ago. All of the deleted scenes from the DC release are contained on this disc (only in 480p standard-def), but this IS NOT the definitive version of the film. I'll have to buy this Blu-ray again when they release a DC version. The packaging for this Blu-ray release is gorgeous. It's like a hardcover book with the disc and several pages about the stars and the process of making the movie. If you MUST watch NBK in HD right now, it'll do the trick (though much of the film was shot in 16mm and grainy video anyway)- and in a pretty package- but not without a sacrifice of 2 minutes of important scenes. BUYER BEWARE!
BLU-RAY REVIEW
2008-07-22
I don't have the greatest home theatre setup for judging a Blu-Ray professionally but I can say that in my humble opinion there was little wrong with the image or audio quality here. Colors were strong, image was sharp, alternate-format scenes (8mm, 16mm, video) all looked about as best as they should. There are plenty of entertaining supplements, including the "director's cut ending" (which is inferior) and I can say that I don't really miss the stuff Oliver Stone had to take out for this theatrical cut (4 minutes). Most of it is still in the deleted scenes.
If you're a completest then perhaps this edition isn't for you, but if you're just a fan of the film, get this Blu-Ray. About a minute of extended shots of violence does not a film make. I don't think it's really worth waiting indefinitely for the "Director's Cut".
Film: A-
Video: B+
Sound: (Tough call. I don't have surround.)
Awesome Mastering

Above great picture and sound there comes a great booklike packaging featuring a booklet on the left and the disc on the right hand side. Beyond the proper restauration of this mediacritic masterpiece it's also dubbed in German 5.1, French 5.1, Italian 5.1 and Japanese 2.0 with region unlocked...so importing is an A1 option :o)
Director's cut is much better..

I was dissapointet because of this version of the movie.
There are so many cuts in relation to the director's cut on my old dvd.
Great Blu Disc!

I watched my VHS of Natural Born Killers about 50 times. I didn't buy the DVD version because I thought that maybe Oliver Stone (or Warner) will produce a special-director's cult edition full of extras footage in near future. Now, finally in BD, I did a great deal: clear crystal image, perfect sound and a beautiful booklet. It couldn't be better!
Sick and twisted.

Oliver Stone would like to have the last word on America's media culture of voyeurism and violence, but whatever he's trying to say in this grisly, unconventional movie comes across terribly garbled. Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis play traveling serial killers who become television celebrities when a Geraldo-like personality (Robert Downey Jr.) turns their madness into the biggest story in the country. Stone extensively rewrote an original script by Quentin Tarantino, and he employs a mosaic of different film stocks, video, and pop pastiches to create a sense of blurred lines between visual phenomena. (The background on Lewis's character's life as an abused child, for instance, is presented as a sitcom starring Rodney Dangerfield.) But the result of these experiments is a pompous, even amateurish effort at grasping the reins of a real-life national debate. One almost wants to tell Stone to sit down and raise his hand next time if he thinks he has something to say. The controversial director would like
Natural Born Killers to be nothing less than a monumental achievement, but it's one of the emptier entries in his filmography.

Natural Born Killers [Blu-ray]
I remember the exact moment this movie came out, the soundtrack as well. People argue and have different opinions, and to that to each his own. Oliver Stone nailed this movie with a vision, a message, and an over the top artistic flair. When I first watched this movie I was glued to the screen. Abuse can do things to people, but is still no excuse for murder. Although, this movie takes fiction and makes it reality. The American media does make killers, etc. infamous. It almost reminds me of "Divine's" character in John Water's "Female Trouble". This movie is one that might be disturbing, but the music the visuals makes it a masterpiece that should not be looked over. To the people who have the opinion of this sucks, I think they should reflect.....and watch the news and wake up. Anyway just watch the darn movie!
A SNOOZER PARODY DONT WASTE YOUR TIME

I agree with a couple of points only. No, this not a typical robbery and killing spree movie. Its filled with satire and parody on everything you can think of. If you watch this movie be expecting an extreme satire using hardcore violence and black comedy. I myself wasnt warned and I expected something near a pulp fiction or a resivoir dogs type move, NO.. you getting a "saturday night live" skit thats a couple hours long, only difference is they include hardcore violence. The rest will have you falling asleep, not much of the storyline through dialogue makes any sense at all. Dont waste your money!! I would rate this with right up there with the "scary movie" parodys.
One of my all time faves...

What I love the most about NBK isn't the cast. I believe that too often, people see the cast and are disappointed in the movie. What really hooked me was the visuals of the film. It isn't like every other film, and when Quentin Tarantino's well runs dry, I'd love to see his version of the film. I really liked the varying camera shots and the animation. It does have kind of a music video feel to it. I also love the fact that something is ALWAYS going on, and it holds my attention, which is a good thing, seeing that I get tired of movies easily. I'm not necessarily the biggest fan of what American society has become over time, and truly appreciate the point of the movie that it tries to drive home. This film is a little cerebral, and may take more than one session to appreciate the film. It is definitely a love/hate film. Me personally, I love it. To the NBK haters out there, definitely give the film another try. I didn't really like Fear and Loathing when I first saw it, but I LOVE that movie. If you nitpick every part of the film, you have ruined it for yourself, because now there's nothing to enjoy about it, because it has been roughly criticized. Just sit back and enjoy the film. If you're into conventional film, and you want to see a dime a dozen picture, you have come to the wrong place. Sure it's a blood bath, but what's to be expected from a film called Natural Born Killers?
