Difficult to install, don't use on beveled/paneled cabinets!
2008-09-15
As previous reviewers have stated, these locks are very difficult to install. Mine did come with a drill bit stop, but I had to go buy the right bit for the drill. Then the stop did not work, it was too loose on the bit, even though we bought the size suggested in the instructions. This resulted in drilling through one cabinet door. Then on the second door, despite being very careful, my husband drilled through even with the stop on the bit. After some measuring, we came to the realization that the lock would only work if installed in a spot where the front of the cabinet was cut in to give it a paneled/beveled look. This makes the door too narrow, so that the lock is impossible to install without drilling all the way through it. We still have this lock on the doors we drilled through, because it works well and we have not been able to get replacement doors yet, we can't find them! So yes, it works great once installed. If you have thick doors and don't mind the hassle, go ahead and get them. Otherwise keep looking.
The Amazing Tot Lok!

This is a wonderful product! I tried several brands of the traditional plastic cupboard toddler locks and they kept breaking or the cupboard could still be pulled open. Tot lok is strong and unopenable without the key. Plus, it does not compromise the look of my cupboards either. The instructions are easy to follow for proper installation. I can't say enough about this great product! Highly reccommended!
Worth the trouble

I installed these on my "under the sink" cabinet where I keep my household cleaners. My daughter is now old enough to open the other cabinet locks, which is fine in respect to the pots and pans, but I defintely don't want her getting into anything dangerous. I love these locks because I feel sure that she cannot open them since we keep the magnet up high and the lock is very strong. They lock automatically when you close the door, so you don't have to worry about forgetting to do it. They are also much more convenient to open than other cabinet locks, which is a bonus for my husband and I. The only complaint I have is the installation process. The instructions are not the best and it takes a lot of time to install. However, it was worth the trouble in order to make sure my daughter cannot get into dangerous chemicals and the fail-proof safety is worth the price!

Loved the idea of a magnetic lock system, but the design is not robust enough. I am fairly handy but installation was frustrating. I tried no less than 3 times very carefully aligning the provided template, drilling, carefully tightening all the screws only to find that the lock mechanism did not engage perfectly and the door popped open with a little pull. The magnet part worked fine with the extension, that was not the problem. Adjusting the catch forward and back, I could not get the latch part to seat properly and if it is off by a few degrees it will collapse and fail to lock the cabinet. I am trying another manufacturer to see if their magnet system is a little easier to install.
works well with correct installation

My husband and I installed these and experienced the same problem as the previous reviewer. The magnet seemed too weak to work well. But the set includes extensions. The hole needs to be drilled deep enough so that the magnet comes close to the front of the cabinet door. (I suggest putting a piece of masking tape on the drill bit, so that you can make the hole deep enough without going through the cabinet door.) When the hole is deep enough & the extension used, it works well. And there's even a latch to keep it unlocked, if you want to keep it unlocked without uninstalling the whole thing.
Great idea poor execution

These are wonderful!!!

I have used the cheap plastic locks, and they always get stretched out and quit working with time. So about 3 years ago I purchased Tot Locks, and I LOVE them!! The doors actually stay closed, and they have not even come close to wearing out yet (and that is with multiple children trying to break in over the years!) I really like the peace of mind knowing that even if I turn my back, the kids can't get into those places and get into things they shouldn't.
I have mine on 6 cabinet doors, and 3 drawers in a span of 3 rooms, and I have a magnet for each room. That makes it very handy. I am online right now to try to find a few more locks even!
I did only give it 4 stars because the installation can be tricky. You do have to be very careful to not drill all of the way through the door (but I installed 9, and never did, so it can be done but be careful and use masking tape on your drill as a guide!) I did have to drill my holes deeper than what it said sometimes so that the magnet would open it. Also, I had some issues with installing it on a very shallow drawer in our bathroom, and had to file the catch down a little bit because it would catch on everything in the drawer, but I can't recall any major fiascos with the installation.
I have only had one break, but not from a child. My mother-in-law came to feed the cats while we were gone and was looking for something under the sink, not knowing we had the locks, and after much struggle, ripped the door open. It was super funny, and she did say that it was REALLY difficult to open!
It is really nice that you can easily flip this red plastic piece to temporarily disable the lock as well.
I would recommend this to ANYONE because I have really used and abused them, and relied on them for 3 years and they haven't let me down once!
Does not fit thick doors
2006-07-01
I too could not use this product because I have 3/4 inch doors. It does not work if your door is thick. I love the idea of these, but they will not work for me.
Does not work on our 3/4" doors
2006-05-27
My cabinet door is 3/4" thick, and after properly installing the lock, I was dismayed to find that the magnet will not open it. The door is too thick for the magnet to have enough pull, but too thin for us to use the extention magnet.
I tried both locks from the package, and neither worked. I even accidentally drilled all the way through the door, so there is no wood in between the lock and the magnetic key, however the key still can not open the lock.
The locks do work when they're not installed in the door, but once they are installed there is too much space and wood in between the magnets. I wanted to post this as a warning to anyone with similar-sized doors; if your door is a little too narrow for using the extention magnet, you may have problems.
The best locks available!

I am very impressed by these locks after having tried the popular cheaper alternative. With the Tot Loks when your cabinets or drawers are closed they stay CLOSED! No gaps for tiny fingers to get caught and smashed in. Included hardware provides support for surfaces of any thickness. One of the most impressive features is the ability to disable the lock for an extended period of time with the flip of a latch (which can only happen intentionally). These locks are well worth their price and are cheaper here than you'd find in the store.
