Time and Energy Saver
2008-04-03
I bought the leaf collection system to go with my BV2500 blower-vac, and found it to be extremely helpful. Instead of using the small shoulder bag that comes with the vac, you can attach the leaf collection system to a trash can or similar large container and rip that leaf pile down to nothing. As I did, you will find that the shoulder bag fills up very quickly. Having the leaves deposited into a much larger container (32-gallon trash can or similar) saves an immense amount of time.
I did not experience the difficulty that some did when attaching the leaf collection system to the trash can; it just takes a little patience and you must be sure to secure it tightly.
If you are purchasing a B&D blower-vac, I would highly recommend this as an addition.
Big improvement from carrying around the bag

Not only the bag ended up carving a groove into your shoulder, but that with this approach, crushed leaves can go directly into a plastic bag that you may then dispose or take elsewhere to use as mulch. Good product!
Leaf Bag Attachment

Had lost the origional one when I bought a replacement. This really helps with vacuuming up leaves. Now if they can make big enough trash bags the job would be complete.
much better than the bag for large jobs, but needs some additional design features.

This item is a great concept, and it does execute as advertised. It is a huge time saver compared to dumping 10 bags of leaves. Also, the unit never gets heavier, as it does when you are collecting the leaves directly to an attached bag. It's nice to be able to go non-stop until an entire 40 gallon trash bag is full.
However, the unit has the following problem:
When installed on a trash can (which I had no problems with this at all) the tube basically lays horizontally and thus shoots debris horizontally. All the leaf and stick debris shoots, at not a low velocity, directly at the side of the inside of the can, tearing up the bag. When the bag was filled, one side was full of holes and torn due to this. Additionally, the debris would collect between the unit cover and the outside of the can. So, when you take of the cover, all that debris just falls to the ground. Another problem is that, since it lays flat, some debris shoots up onto the fabric cover it self. the cover is thin and delicate and will not be up to that constant abuse, it will fail after a season or two for me. B&D needs to design this so it shoots STRAGHT DOWN into the trash can. I belive I would have given this 5 stars if it were designed that way. you can even see in the "action shot" pictures on this site, at the top of the can, it is laying flat.
With that said, it's obvious some thought was put into this device. the neck that attaches to the vac it self swivels nice and smoothly. The tube seems to be durable and able to handle the debris easily. The tube is a good length to where you can vac a fairly good size area without having to move the can.
Another thing to consider is storage. It is very bulky and probably would not be a good idea to hang it as that may kink the coiled wire in the tubing. I have to use an entire large drawer in the bottom of my tool cabinet.
Finally, somebody mentioned that they had to buy the neck adapter separately, not the case with the one I bought from Amazon, the neck adapter came with it. Overall it's a good buy and a huge time saver if you have a lot of leaves, however I don't expect it to last past next season or two. So, I hope the next time I go to buy one, B&D will have a next iteration with at least the feature of shooting directly downwards.
Easy disposal

Product saves your back. Leaves travel to can without having to unload cloth bag. It makes it much easier to get leaf collection done in a faster time.
Solution

I hesitated getting this product because of the comments about the difficulty in keeping the fabric "lid" on the waste can. But I thought "There must be a solution. I wonder....?" So I went ahead and ordered it, and, when it came, went to W-----t and bought a yard waste receptacle with a lid that could be secured with its handles. I then cut a hole in the lid just big enough for the hose, ran the hose through, attached the cloth bag to the can (DON'T remove the fabric "lid"), and then secured the lid on top of the fabric with the handles. Voila--the lid stayed on (without relying on the tie cord) and, therefore, there was very little dust. I am very happy with the modified product--it works like a dream.
Not so much

It works, but it's a little more cumbersome than I expected it to be. Had to tape the hose to my blower/vac to get it to stay. Better than the prior bag I had on the vac, but not much better.
Black & Decker Leaf Hog Collection System

This system lets you mulch leaves directly into a trash can, and consists of a flexible hose and a cover that fits on the trash can. Product was purchased to replace a hose that had worn out, and is better than the original. The cord system that tightens to keep the bag attached to the trash can is more substantial than the original. My old one used to blow off every so often, this doesn't happen with the new one. My local "big box' home and garden center suggested getting this online and experience was great. I ordered on Monday around lunch time, and product was delivered to my house the next afternoon. I am very happy with the product and the process.
Leaf collector

Exactly what I was looking for. I was so tired of lugging around the bag and emptying it into the garbage can fairly frequently. This is perfect. The only thing I don't like is having to empty the garbage can into the paper yard waste bags, but it is so much better.
Even though it's not perfect, I would buy it again

I bought my Leaf Hog with one purpose in mind: sucking and chopping. We have so many leaves, and I wanted an easy way to turn them into mulch and material for the compost pile. The Leaf Hog is perfect for that, but the collection bag was not.
I was constantly having to remove the bag, then dump the contents into trash bags for storage. I spent more time fiddling with the collection bag than the actual leaf collection!
I was complaining about it and saying "there's gotta be a better way," when a friend said "actually, there is..." and eureka!
This contraption is a godsend. I can now fill a lined trash can before having to stop and reload. It's much more time efficient. A job that would have taken me three days can now be done in a day. (We have a LOT of leaves!)
Others have complained that the fabric part that attaches to the trash can can be difficult to manage. I agree. I plan to remove the drawstring and replace it with elastic. I hope this will make it easier to manage, as well as making a tighter fit. Also, the clip that holds the drawstring in place seems to be backwards. I have to twist it to clip it. That's not right.
My other complaint is that the fabric used in the top allows a fine dust of leaf spray to exit, which makes me cough. Next time, I'll wear a mask.
Overall, however, if you find the collection bag that comes with the Leaf Hog just isn't big enough for the job you have, I think you'll find this system helpful. It's not perfect, but the limitations are minor.
An interesting thing to note: I first put this in my shopping cart at Amazon, but didn't need it until the following autumn. So I piddled around before actually making the purchase. The price bounced around like a stock - started at around $40, then down to $35, then up to $38 and so on. By the time I actually bought it, I paid less than $25 for it. Worth every cent!
I would give it five stars, except the drawstring issue seems to be a problem for nearly everyone.
