Season 1 - Sex & City DVD

Very happy with the product that I purchased. Only negative feedback is that an episode listing is missing, although easy enough to download this off the internet. Also the cover is a little flimsy and not a standard locking case. Other than the superficial aspects, the dvd's are great.
Nothing but a glorified sitcom and overrated to high hell....

Many people out there look at this series as a mature, adult show about women and their real problems. This show is neither mature nor adult. This show is really just a glorified sitcom, with dirty talk and some very short (and not erotic) sex scenes. The 4 women are very superficial, and are not very realistic. Constantly eating out at posh restaurants in Manhattan (there are other burroughs in NYC, such as Queens and Brooklyn, where it is much cheaper to eat) every day, sleeping with a different man each week, buying as many things as they can, partying all hours of the night, and they still find time to work their professional jobs. These women are supposed to be "professionals", but if that were the case, they would never be able to keep up their lifestyles (even with doing Red Bulls and coke all day). I feel that these women are very unhappy, and they look for fullfilment through a hedonistic lifestyle. I hark back to the 1960's in the films L'avventura and La Dolce Vita, where this kind of lifestyle was depicted as cheap (spiritually speaking), hollow, shallow, and depressing (and it still is, regardless of what the media may tell you). Most of their affairs are quite meaningless, it's mostly sex without emotion, and the conversations remind me more of locker room talk written by sitcom writers. And the sex scenes (which many people told me they were so hot) are tepid at best. I have seen films by European art filmmakers (Bertolucci and Breillat, to name a few) that are light years more honest and artistic than anything this show can put out. Americans have very childish attitudes towards sex, almost childlike. They giggle at dirty talk, and try to show off their "knowledge" of sex, like when a 6th grader discovers the sex ed book, and brags about the new dirty words he/she has discovered. Overall, a very disappointing show. Do not fool yourselves...

Sex and the City - The Complete First Season is fantastic! The writing, acting, and chemistry between these 4 ladies is just magic. My favorite episode from this season is The Baby Shower where Carrie thinks she could be pregnant. Only 12 episodes but they are worth every penny. Buy it today!

From the my first viewing of Sex in the City on HBO, I was smitten. My husband remarked that he felt like a fly on the wall listening to what women talk about to each other. He loved Samantha but later settled on Charlot as his favorite caracture. I started out liking Carrie, but also ended liking Charlot best for her womanity but admiring Maranda for her no non-sense views. The first series is great, and to see the episodes uncut and uncensored makes the humor. I bought this for my husband and will get the whole set.
First time viewer 2007-07-15
Good pilot series which introduces you to the characters in the show. I would recommend Season 1 to anyone who's heard so much about this series but have not seen it to-date.

Wanted to see the show from the beginning before seeing the movie. Now I'm very sorry I didn't watch it while it was on HBO. Great series!!

Translation of the Articles that started it all! 2008-05-30
I love Sex & the City. Recently, I have been reading the original articles from the Observer to see how this show came about.
The first season is quite a good translation of ideas from Bushnell's articles into parts of each episode. The "interview" portions where people look directly into the camera and comment on the episode's topic is very much like Bushnell's journalistic questioning.
Although season one is not my favorite season as a whole, there are so many great episodes and quotes that it is a must have for fans.
I find the comedy fresh and inspiring: written by women, for women, and portrayed by women. It discusses things that were not too common before this show existed on television. And it broke free of the old television mold for women, no longer is it a virgin v. slut conflict, it is a story about real complex women that seem to inhabit a fantasy world of shoes, cocktails, and fast lives.
But remember, above all things, it is a show meant for entertainment.
