Great Axe
2008-07-02
This axe is weighted well, retains a sharp edge, and doesn't get stuck in the wood easily. A word of caution.(Don't miss the log)
Great axe - powerful, lightweight and well balanced
2008-06-15
Nicely balanced, lightweight and far more powerful than I'd have guessed from its weight; the Fiskars super splitting axe is great. One thing keeps it from being perfect - it doesn't come with a teenager to split and stack all day....
Great, but only if you're not tall

This and the companion chopping axe are great tools. The splitting effort with this is much less than with a convetional splitting maul. Quality and workmanship are excellent.
Two issues:
1) The handle is short. If you're over 5'4", this is a one-handed toy. If you're 5'4" or less, this is perfect (unless you want an excuse not to split wood). My wife absolutely loves it. Did I mention that the handle is short?
2) The nonstick surface treatment makes it unsuited for close work - making kindling out of a single log by hitting the log and axe together on the floor. When you do this, the log often slides off the head and jumps inwards, hitting the hand holding the axe handle. Hard to describe, but this is not the tool for making kindling.
In summary - very nice tool for general purpose splitting for less vertically enhanced folks. Too light for really large and knotty logs, but lots less effort for the bulk of the wood. Despite the short handle, doesn't make a good hatchet for tall people.
Disappointed

Fiskars Super Splitting Axe with 28-Inch Handle and 4-1/4# Head #7854 - The handle is too short. You lose a serious amount of mechanical advantage by having only a 28" handle. Because of this, my old dull ax could perform as well if not better. Also the head can be sharpened as a knife. But if you use it often you will run out of space for sharpening. After using it I think it was designed for occasional recreational splitting. I do not recommend it if you plan to do much splitting.

Fiskar's short handles are annoying at best and a buddy with their chopping axe nicked his boot twice already due to its short length. My old splitter and axe handles are a full 8 inches longer than fiskars and are more appropriate for normal sized people. If you're 5 feet tall or less then enjoy a very good cutting tool. Other people think twice.
I ground down the splitting flare on mine and keep it in my pickup for chopping big logs that fall across the jeep trails. Works nice for that purpose.
Splits wood beautifully
2008-01-03
The Fiskars super splitting axe splits large and thick blocks of wood with ease. The high-quality carbon steel blade has a PTFE coating, which reduces friction and helps facilitate the removal of the blade from wood. The 4-1/2-pound axe is smartly designed and easy to use. The 28-inch handle consists of a sturdy glass fiber-reinforced polyamide and is molded around the head to prevent loosening and separation. This ax is much lighter than ones with wooden handles and less likely to break at the neck. You can use the face of the ax as a sledge with Fiskars's splitting wedge for large blocks of wood. The ax comes complete with a plastic sheath for carrying and safe storage and includes a lifetime warranty.
Axe from hell splits toughest logs!

This is by far the best axe I've ever owned. My friend and I used this axe to split two chords of wood in a day. Let me tell you, I have some tough, fibrous and knotty logs that my usual maul had all sorts of problems with. This axe made short work of all my wood. I was surprised that for a lighter axe, it was engineered to be comfortable yet very efficient at what it does. I was apprehensive about it since it looks so different than a conventional axe but I am very pleased that the handle is so durable and withstood some hard hits when we missed a few logs (hit them with the handle) late in the day. I would definitely buy another with no hesitation. I also recommend the Fiskars sharpener. It works like a charm on this axe.

I grew up in NYC and split logs rarely, usually during a camping trip. I recently bought a house with a fireplace and had to split some logs so this is the first time I've had to split any significant number of logs or had the need to own an axe. As a novice, this axe was very easy to use and did the job very efficiently. The handle is quite comfortable. I would recommend buying the sharpener as well. After some use, sharpening the blade makes the job proceed more easily.
Makes splitting firewood easy

I decided to purchase this axe after reading the reviews, and I was not disappointed. On the very first white oak log, I was amazed at how effortlessly it split. The second log was a more stubborn chunk, and initially, I was concerned when the axe apparently just bounced off. After inspecting the log, however, I saw that the axe had actually sunk deep into the end, but the non-stiok coating made it pop back out. One more swing at the same spot split the log. After a few dozen logs, the non-stick coating had worn off slightly, so it didn't bounce out of logs anymore, but it was still very easy to remove from the wood. I'm not sure how long the non-stick coating will last - only time will tell.
super says it all

i have and have used many different type of axes and mauls over the years and i'v never liked any of them as much as the super splitting axe. the thing is almost unbreackable, i say almost because i broke a smaller axe last year and they replaced it for free. i'v never been able to get somthing fixed or replaced for free before. if you compare the super axe to a maul you'll see that its smaller and lighter but don't let this fool you, the fact is that it works easly and splits great and it feels like a axe not a maul (cannon ball on a stick). ow and you won't be as tired when your done splitting eather.
