Undeserved negativity. 2008-10-06
Let me say that I haven't used this lens in a few years. I am now using much more expensive L series lenses. I still have the photos that I took with this lens on my hard drive, however, and technically they are great. For the price of this lens they are remarkably great. Very low distortion, no CA and razor-sharp images. I am saying this after looking at pictures just this week, after a few years of honing my photo skills and my photoshop eye. I am very sensitive (some have said too sensitive) to defects that can only bee seen at 100%-200% and I do not see any in the pictures taken with this lens. I have seen many when looking at the pictures from the 85mm f1.8 lens, for instance.

The lens was mated with a Rebel XT when I took those pictures, incidentally, which frankly it is meant to be. This is not a lens to be mated with a semi-pro or pro body. I'm not sure what the results would be there. They would probably be pretty good with a 40D but with a 5D I don't know. Again with the Rebel they were great, and I think given the cost of this lens it is meant for a camera like the Rebel. For the price this really can't be beat if you are shooting with a Rebel, Rebel XT or Rebel XTi. 5 stars because it does exactly what it is supposed to do and more. It is supposed to be a competent lens for a low price and it ends up being a great lens at a low price.

Great! 2008-10-01
I have been long over due for adding a new zoom to my camera collection. Love the lense and waiting to see the results of my first shots!

This is an easy buy 2008-09-08
I bought this lens for my wife who is a semi new camera user. She loves it and for the price you can't go wrong. I can't imagne spending 3x's more on a so called better lens at the level that we are at taking pictures this lens rocks.

Love this lense! Makes a huge improvement in pictures! 2008-09-06
I was looking for a lense to take pictures of the scenery while we are here in Alaska. This lense is awesome! You can still take close ups as long as you stand back atleast 4 ft and zoom in! A must have.

Awesome! 2008-08-16

Great! -This lens took action shots. 2008-06-29
My husband and I were recently on a trip along the Oregon coast and to view the Giant Redwoods of California. We bought this lens to go along with our Canon Rebel TSi 12 megapixel camera. Some have said they could not take action shots with it but I have great photos of sea gulls in flight and the waves as they crest, curl, and crash on the beach. You can see the feathers on the birds. I also took photos of the ocean crashing against rocks and they are so clear you can see the outer water droplets. We also bought a High-speed SD memory disk which could have helped with the photos. I would recommend this lens.

Works pretty well. 2008-06-20
I'm not too sure if this one is up to par as my buddy's 70-300mm. It does get the job done.

As expected 2008-06-13
Was satisfied with what was sent to me. It was as I expected. Works great and does a wonderful job zooming in on objects far away. A little shaky with far away shots but again, overall, very satisfied with purchase.

OK for beginners 2008-05-06
If you can master the quirks of this lens, when you move to a better one you will be MUCH better. It keeps you on your toes, if you don't have much light you will need a tripod and adjust your ISO. Its the first telephoto lens I (as well as many others) get with their camera. Is it terrible? No. Just know the limitations.

I try to keep it under 200mm, above that well it works alright but you can just crop what you need in an editing program and it will be much sharper.

I would probably say those of you who would know the limits of this lens would probably not buy it anyway. Its fine for the money, but really for outdoor use ONLY and sunny days as well. I've had it for almost a year and I am ready to upgrade, but I do feel by having a lens like this to start does get you to think about what you are doing with it.

Review: ... "Click! The No Nonsense Guide to Digital Cameras" is misnamed. It covers a lot more than just cameras. In a couple of hundred pages, it includes using a scanner and Adobe Photoshop Elements 2 to rescue faded, damaged family photos, the basic guidelines to good picture taking, how to use Elements 2 to improve your digital photos, and how to print and preserve your pictures for the ages. White, the author of the bestseller "How Computers Work," knows how to pack a lot of helpful, understandable information in a brief no nonsense book.

Review: "This Camera is one of the best in its price range. It takes beautiful clear pictures and can be used right out of the box, but its worth learning all its features. The included memory holds about 20-25 pictures so I upgraded to 128mb. I reccomend getting a 128mb card and the Sony camera case. Not only is this one of the best cameras in its class it includes decent software and rechargeable batteries that are at least a 20$ value.
HIGHLY reccomend over canon, kodak, and fuji. One more thing this camera has CARL Zeiss lens (if you dont know, great lens) all the competetors have generic lens."

From the Back Cover The megapixel hype
The fact is a camera’s megapixel rating is only a measure of how many pixels (photosensitive sites) an image sensor has…. An image sensor is simply one component of an entire system that produces a digital photograph… So resist buying into the megapixel hype when you’re choosing a digital camera. From Chapter 1
