Editorial Review
Faster and easier than the traditional roller-and-tray painting setup, this power painter lets you suck paint from the can to the roller with the push of a button. Paint is sucked from the can through a hose for a steady stream of paint to the roller-eliminating repetitive trips to the paint tray; speeding up the painting process and allowing the user to achieve professional looking results at a fraction of the cost. This 110-volt electric painting system draws any paint directly from the included 1-gallon paint container, a 1-gallon can, or a 5-gallon can. Flow controls are located on the handle to help ensure smooth, even applications. The system applies up to 1-gallon of latex or oil-based paint in 15 minutes. compatible with all types of latex paints --Brian D. Olson

Wagner power rollers are amazing...if you understand how 2008-08-30
I've used a couple Wagner power rollers over the years. I think they're great. But as other reviewers point out, you have to be ready and able to handle the clean up. If so, you'll blaze through painting.

Here's the trick: BATHTUB!

You'll need to allocate 15+ minutes for cleanup. And keep a couple plastic cleaning brushes handy...one toothbrush and one larger. Set the unit in the high end of the tub (keeping it dry) and run a couple cans of warm water through it under power. Brush off the other parts with warm water and the brushes.

Also, Wagner's show their stuff when painting large rooms and spaces, where the time saved rolling outweighs the time spent cleaning. (Don't fire this puppy up to paint a closet.)

Also, When used correctly, Wagners don't drip nearly as much as continuously dipping paint from a roller pan. They rock because you NEVER have to dip; don't repeatedly have to refill the pan; don't have to move a wet roller from the pan to the wall, etc. All you have to do is push the button, roll, push the button, roll.

Misc Tips:
1) When painting, push the button and saturate the roller, apply a good amount of paint to a relatively small area, and roll it out...repeat, over and over.

2) If you can, get as many rollers as colors you're going to paint.
You can wash the rollers clean of paint, but the quickest way is to wrap a wet (with paint) roller in Saran Wrap, stick it in a gallon size ziplock bag, and put it in the fridge or freezer for longer term storage. Cleaning the rollers takes time. Buying multiple rollers for dedicated paints saves a lot of time...and that's the point of this device. BTW, wrapping rollers (and all open surfaces with plastic wrap, will keep the unit ready to go for short periods (like overnight)at room temperature. This will allow you to do both coats in two days with only one clean-up. But be meticulous about covering every part of the roller system that has wet paint. If paint dries in the system, you could be screwed. NOTE: This is what I do. I'm sure Wagner would not recommend this. Do at your own risk!

3) Cut a couple pieces of flat cardboard, one for the pump base, and one for the roller. Make sure the one for the pump is big enough to allow you to change out paint cans. Move these as you go.

All said, if you're painting a large room, or several rooms, you have a bathtub, and understand that clean up will be a process, Wagner's will make the painting process So Much Easier!

Highly Recommend!

Time saver 2007-03-22
It is hard to believe it saves so much time and cleans up easily

Lots of flaws 2005-07-04
Corner and edge attachments are useless. They splatter uncontrollably and create huge mess. It's easier (and cleaner) to use a brush for corners. Painting with a roller is a bliss - a real time saver. But fighting with a hose in process is not much fun. Cleaning is really the worst part of this. It takes at least 20 minutes and I could never get it completely clean. Replacement parts are expensive. Overall - too much trouble and mess. I think I'll stick with a manual roller and tray.

wagner 959 power roller 2002-10-21
My unit is 959 model #0271160, the bottom hose started leaking, and my on off switch in the handle quit. I have used this unit from 1994 to now, I can't seem to find parts for it, I need help this unit to find parts, this is the best thimg that I have found to use to paint with, I would like to keep my unit and I hope you can found help for me.

cleanup takes too long and pads/rollers to costly 2002-09-05
Since I am adding a room addition I thought it would be
nice to use a power roller for both the interior and
exterior painting. The Wagner 959 seemed the ideal tool.

I find the Wagner system very hard to work with because:

1) The cleanup takes too long and is VERY messy. No where
in the instructions does it mention that the faucet adapter
has pressure relief ports that spray water in various
directions including at the electic cord and pump (when
cleaning up outside with a garden hose). Cleanup with
a disposable pad/roller and foil-lined paint tray takes
me less than two minutes (and one of those is washing my
hands).

2) The best price I have found for the pads and rollers
are typically triple the cost of the disposable kind.
And you can buy A LOT of those for the cost of the
Wagner system.

3) The pad I used quickly started to drag strings thru
the work and the plush surface seperated from the foam
backing. I hope the high priced replacements last
longer.

4) The 'wrestling the snake' was annoying. The hose
system significantly limited my movement and control
when pad painting. When priming siding (in a
horizontal setup) the hose was always dragging thru
the work, getting messy and spoiling the finish.

I'll take a regular pad or roller any day.

Worked like a charm 2002-03-20
I've read the previous reviews and purchased the 959 power roller anyway. I recently had my basement finished and used the power roller to prime and paint the walls and ceiling.

As others state, the preparation and cleanup ends up taking longer than the actual painting. The painting went very smoothly, and the time was cut in half vs. a hand roller. Be sure to clean your systems completely. The 15-20 minutes of time spent cleaning the system ensure it works correctly after each use.

Since my painting job was large, the purchase was easy to justify and I would purchase the system again.

Quick and Easy, I love it!! 2002-03-13
I bought my power roller to do the painting in the home we recently purchased. I am very impressed with the 959. I have not used the edging tool, after reading the comments here. In all fairness, however, I didn't buy the thing to do my edging!! I use a two inch angle brush for that and it works just fine. My edging takes longer than painting the rest of the room with the power roller.

A couple of helpful tips :
1. Do all of your prep work first, before you get ready to roll. The cleanup is time consuming (we are using paint, after all). I have had the best luck doing as many rooms as you can in one long marathon.
2. Practice a little without paint in the roller first. This will allow you to get used to dragging the hose around and better prepare you for moving the Power Roller pump unit in a larger room.
3. Get a plastic bag from the grocery store and put the entire pump unit inside with the paint can in the machine. This will eliminate any possibility of spillage should disaster strike and minimize drips when changing cans.
4. DO NOT SUBMERGE THE HANDLE SECTION WITH THE SWITCH ON IT. This is mentioned on the instructions, it should be in red letters on the side of the box (who reads the instructions?).
If you get water into the switch mechanism, the switch ceases to function properly until it dries out. This takes a long time and much trouble. Avoid this headache and don't stick the switch in water.
5. Plan for a messy cleanup. The bigger mess you are able to make, the faster the cleanup process goes.
6. Read the instructions throughly before use. This machine is different than any other tool you have, so study the operation before painting. I am not kidding here.
7. Have fun!

Happy Painting.

Wagner Power Roller model 959 2001-09-26
I used it to paint my entire house and it worked great!
The only draw backs are
1. the edger is usless
2. Clean up time takes a little long, 15 min to clean really well
which is the main reason I didn't give it a 5 star
3. the handle is weak near the paint applicator switch and it cracked on me, probably due to the fact that I bought the additional extension handle to reach ceilings without a ladder and that led me to put a little too much pressure on the handle.
After the handle cracked (half way through my last room) I had to use the old fashion roller which takes alot longer and is a lot more messy. Which really REALLY! made me appreciate my power roller.
Great roller, I really recommend it if you plan on doing a alot or even just a couple of rooms of painting.

price too high 2001-08-10
I was in town today and was shopping for this power paint roller. I went to Wal-Mart as well as a few paint stores and hardware stores , Althoe the paint stores were much higher priced than you the hardware stores and Wal-Mart stores were the same price..no actually lower priced because I won't pay shipping and don't have to wait for it to be shipped when I go to Wal-Mart or my local hardware store.

Thanks Dennis
