Even after it's release 7 years ago, the music and lyrics on this CD are as fresh and contemporary as anything being produced today, A must for any Jill Scott fan!!

Whenever an artist breaks through the current boundaries of a genre, we have a chance to remember that we count on them to do that even more than we count on them to show us why a genre works or matters. Then occasionally somebody shows up who can do both. In this set of tracks, on any track she wants, at any moment she wants, Jill Scott simply sails effortlessly back and forth, in and out of, the currents of soul, jazz, and spoken word in a sleek vessel made of rhythm and blues, ultimately showing up as an amazingly nuanced torch singer who will make you stop what you're doing and pay attention until she's finished. In Jill's cuts, she shows us what soul is for, what jazz is for, what spoken word is for -- when to use them, how they matter -- when you need to get your inner beats out. Then you wind up saying to her, "yeah, do that again..."
A Wonderful Singer With A Great Album 2007-08-12
I absolutely love this album. This is by far the best album of the decade. Jill and her producers took their time when making this album. Jill uses singing, poetry, and rapping very nicely throughout this album. The album is very sap-free and has a mix of R&B, jazz, hip-hop, and poetic influences in most of the songs. Jill is truly gifted and can actually sing. I also like that she has the ability to change her voice to fit the music she is singing. The most notable tracks are "The Way," "He Loves Me," "It's Love," and "Long Walk." I highly recommend this album to anyone who loves good music. I was so skeptical in buying this when I saw her first video but I was so wrong. She has so much great music on this album and it is truly essential for anyone to have it in their collection.
Who Is Jill Scott? Words & Sounds, Vol. 1 2007-07-21
I agree with previous posters that it's hard to expound further on this cd when others have so eloquently written their reviews of it but I love the artist and the cd so much that I'm going to add my two cents...
This is a disc that still gets constant play in my house, in the car & at work! There was such a huge buzz on Jill Scott prior to the release of her debut that I could not wait to get my hands on it. Every song & interlude just flows so magically into the track making this not only one of the best debuts by any artist but also one of the best "neo-soul" albums ever produced so those who still don't know who Jill Scott is but enjoy good music will not be sorry in adding this disc to their collection.
My fave tracks to this day are: THE WAY, I THINK IT'S BETTER, WATCHING ME, ONE IS THE MAGIC #, HE LOVES ME, IT'S LOVE & HONEY MOLASSES. Another honorable mention goes to LOVE RAIN (although I like this version very much, I adore how she switched it up on her live cd).

You can pop on this CD and just sit back or you can sing along. Certainly Jill made an impression on me. Sure, she's no Ruth Brown, Chaka Khan, or Gladys Knight for that matter, but she is JILL SCOTT and she is a stone cold singer ("singa"). This woman is skillful; she can scale it up high and bring it down low (lo') and hit falsetto and she blows! (Sometimes I get a glimpse of Ella Fitzgerald when Jill sings.)
I love this album. AND I love her LIVE "Experience" album, too. Thanks, Jilly from Philly!!!

Words and Sounds to Move You!!!! 2008-01-19
If you are just getting into Jill Scott you have to start at the beginning. This is where Jill lays down her poetic lyrics that are so deep, I swear you will look at the world differently. This is an album that will get you laughing, smiling and more importantly thinking.
A timeless and amazing talent, the best tracks on this album, for me, that display Jill's fantastic use of words to create vivid imagery are "A Long Walk", "Love Rain" "Is It The Way".
If you have to buy only one Jill Scott album you have to BUY THIS ONE!!!!!
