A Great Tool at a Great Price
2008-09-09
I do occasional grinding on heavy steel components, and therefore could not justify spending as much as some of these types of tools can cost. Also, I'm a price-shopper. Amazon handled the order Great. The tool arrived on time in perfect condition. It's a tad light on power for heavy grinding, but I did not find that a problem, as the tool works so well. I needed a variable speed controller for the grinder, and purchased an inexpensive Router Speed Controller from Harbor Freight, and that did the job. Its a great tool at a great price.

Very useful die grinder. Not to heavy for long work periods.
Durable, have used this item for years.

Makes a good production machine. Good equipment for the price. Found that with a speed control it became very flexible. Quite powerful for the size and weight. Only draw back is no variable speed.

6 months
2006-09-02
Six months is how long this tool lasted me. Granted, I used it hard, using a bur to dig out metal in full pin welds, but i still expected more. The motor preforms reasonably well, but the cheap plastic body disingrates with the vibration, and then the gears don't mesh right. Buy a pneumatic one insted, or at least go for the metal body model.

Best tool in my commercial sculpture shop!
2004-06-26
I have, and am still using, the first unit I bought six years ago. I have a professional wood sculpture business, and have run this grinder hundreds of hours with carbide shaping tools on hardwood. Mostly walnut and birch. I bought a second unit that is setting in a drawer in case this one ever quits, but it isn't going to be soon. The one problem is that the slide switch gathers dust, and now it takes an extra push to get it going. It doesn't ever stop once running. If I dig the dust out of the switch it is fine. Other than that one thing, the heavy bearings, the good case, and strong motor, make this a wonderful tool. WAY better than any tools in my shop by Delta and Sears.

I have been doing flowbench developed porting for over 22 years. Sometimes my porting bench runs 12 hours a day. I own (in use at this site) more than 8 air die grinders, 8 hand held electrics(makita!), and 2 remote cable driven units. Years ago (1982) I was looking for an affordable electric die grinder, I tried several $80 - $100 units NONE LASTED more than a few days! EXCEPT THE MAKITA YOU SEE HERE! I still have the first 2 I bought, DATED 1982, until a few weeks ago only brushes and a switch had ever been replaced!! These 2 have THOUSANDS of hours use. Finally I had to replace a shaft in 1!! A true industrial quality tool @ a hobby price! Ken
MAKITA DIE GRINDER FOR WOODWORKING
2001-07-13
I BOUGHT MY GRINDER TO USE ON MY WOODWORKING WORKING PROJECTS. I WAS IMPRESSED BY ITS LIGHTWEIGHT AND THE ABILITY TO HOLD IT IN MY HAND WHILE USING IT ON MY WOOD PROJECTS. I NEEDED SOMETHING THAT COULD HOLD METAL BURRS FOR RAPID REMOVAL OF WOOD AND THIS PRODUCT HAS DONE REALLY WELL. I ALSO WENT OUT AND BOUGHT THE 1/8 INCH SIZE COLLET SO I COULD USE MY 1/8 INCH BURRS. OVERALL I HAVE USED THIS FOR 3 YEARS AND NUMEROUS OF PROJECTS. I INTENDED TO BY A FOREDOM CARVING TOOL, BUT THIS SEEMED MORE PORTABLE AND MORE PRACTICAL USES AROUND THE SHOP. I GUESS MY ONLY COMPLAINT IS THAT SOMETIMES THE SPEED IS TOO HIGH AND I WISH THEY HAD ANOTHER SETTING AT 10,000 RPM's INSTEAD OF 25,000, IT TENDS TO BURN THE WOOD WHEN I HAVE ON A SANDING SLEEVE. EVENTUALLY THE MOTOR WILL BURN OUT BECAUSE OF THE WORK I PUT IT THROUGH BUT 3 YEARS LATER, IT STILL RUNS FINE. SO I RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT BECAUSE OF ITS MANY PRACTICAL USES. I HAVE USED THIS ON WOOD SCULPTURES, STONE, AND METAL. THERE ARE MANY TYPES OF CUTTING AND SANDING ATTACHMENTS YOU CAN USE WITH THIS GRINDER, JUST BE SURE TO WEAR EYE PROTECTION!
