Excellent printer!!!!

I purchased this printer recently and I am so suprised at how well the photos turn out. I printed out some professional photos and they looked almost identical to the originals. Anything you print out only takes a few seconds to print & the quality is excellent. I also like how you can attach a small roll of photo paper to print smaller photos. There is also a helpful feature that lets you see how much ink you have left. Cards also look great when printed out. Highly recommended!!

Wow! Can't tell 875DC prints on glossy paper from local photo processing...amazing color and quality! Plus it's very fast and so quiet. The built-in card reader for digital cameras makes images available almost instantly. (Includes adapter for CompactFlash cards, 9 paper samples, and paper roll/adapter for glossy 4x6 prints.)
All this and it's no bigger than my old Epson Stylus 800! I'm using the 875DC with a Mac G4 but it's for PCs, too. Can't say enough about this great product!

A great contender in the photographic inkjet world

The Epson Photo 875DC produces some of the sharpest photos I have seen. For use at home or a small office, the speed is very good, noise level is minimal, and print quality excellent.
I have printed on special papers from the glossy to the matt finish and have been very satisfied with the quality of each. I have even put through heavy card stock paper, such as for greeting cards, and it works like a champ.
The ability to plug in your digital camera memory pcmcia or flash memory cards is a great feature and well worth the money. Even though you require a PC to actually print, that is usually a non-issue since most people will want to do some manipulation of the photo before printing. Cropping and brightness/contrast at a minimum should be done before printing.

Roll paper is hard to use

The plus side: Very easy to install (I have windows 2000, Dell Pentium II), photo quality is very good. The flash memory card reader should be very useful for many people (I don't use it because I already have a memory stick reader).
The down side: the roll paper. This suppose to be a good feature. But it's difficult to load the roll paper. Also, after finished printing, you have to cut paper manually, and very carefully. If the edge is not cut cleanly - "at a 90 degree angle in each corner", you may have paper jam next time you print.
The Best Photo Printer yet!! 2001-05-31
This is my first photo printer and I've bought this after doing a lot of research. My biggest concern was how can a ... printer print photos that are comparable to expensive Lab developed photos. I do not know how it is possible, but after I saw the pictures that came out of the Epson Stylus Photo 850DC, I was absolutely spellbounded! The clarity and feel of the photo's are exactly as the ones of Lab photos. All I can say is that you have to see it to believe it. From numerous reviews, I've learned that some people had trouble installing the software. Therefore, when I installed the sofware on my 500Mhz Celeron processor with windows 98, I followed step by step from the quick start guide that came with the printer. I did not face a glitch. Everything went very smooth. So I strongly recommend that you read the guide before installing the software even if you are an expert in computers. Ok here are few minor downsides of the printer: It only comes with compactflash card adapter, but my digital camera uses smartmedia. The roll photo paper tend to stay "rolled" after printing photos even if placed inside a book to flatten it. I recommend that you place the photo's in an album and keep it there. The color ink life is only 15 pages of 8x10 photo prints. However, the color ink cartridge is not that expensive (about ...). Hey, you have to loose something to get those dazzling pictures. And finally, the printer does not come with the A-B USB cable. So make sure you buy the cable (cost is about ...) when buying the printer otherwise all your exciting anticipation will diminish when you can't even use it. Overall, the printer is a little miracle that would make you home a virtual photo Lab. Get one!!!
WOW! Wonderful Printer! Epson 875DC Is A Shining Star! 2001-03-28
I do not know why people are having trouble with USB. I am using this printer with a Pentium 150 Laptop and did not have a problem with installing the printer nor installing the software that comes with it. In fact, I have this printer running through a USB port in my docking station so any problems with USB must be the individual computer's problem and USB support may just need updated drivers. Also, my pictures have printed quickly and I just love this printer. The photos are stunning. I love the roll glossy paper, but did have some trouble getting it to feed into the computer. I found out that I just had to follow directions, put the paper in the booklet and roll backward. This flattened the paper and it fed fine. Wow, Epson has done a marvelous job with this printer. I have been non-stop printing since I bought it. BRAVO!
Difficult to Install 2001-03-03
I am not sure of the quality, since I just received this printer yesterday. However, I can tell you that it took me four to five hours to install. It kept freezing my system when it was configuring the printer port. Finally, I went to the Epson site to look around. I came upon a new driver in the downloads area. I downloaded this driver and after several attempts, It installed properly. I am disappointed that there were no warnings that the driver that shipped with the product may not work. I thought that USB was supposed to be easy? Anyway, I am looking forward to printing some pictures and seeing if this thing can print as well as others say.
EXCELLENT Quality and Speed, but Epson support is terrible. 2001-02-24
I've owned Epsons all my life, and if there's one thing they've always kept focus on is the quality of their prints. They were the first printer company to really target "photo-realistic" printers to the mainstream market, and I think their R&D team has done a fabulous job at improving their technology over the years. The prints are absolutely fabulous, and I haven't noticed any of the fading that some of the older models had a problem with... and I treat my photos like crap, too. :)
The roll feature is also very nice, because you can print banners... reminds me of back in the day when Print Shop was the coolest program on the market and my dot-matrix printer could print banners. Nostalgia aside, these banners are a different breed- you can do ANYTHING with this printer. I love it, in terms of quality.
The PCMCIA slot is also a very nice touch, especially if you have a digital camera. The DC model has the Compact Flash adapter included, but you can buy a PCMCIA card that takes smartmedia or Sony Memory Sticks (if you want the epson with the Sony Memory Stick adapter instead of the Compact Flash adapter, go and get the 875DCS model).
But here's the downside to this printer. Sure, it's got USB and everything, but the USB support for win2k is horrendous. I've tried working with Epson on numerous occasions, but I've come to realize that they had no clue what the problems were either, and that they were taking stabs in the dark with what to do with my system. With most other printers, you could actually just hook up the parallel port, but beware, THIS PRINTER HAS NO PARALLEL PORT. IT ONLY SUPPORTS USB.
The problem I had was this: It would print about half a page, stop, then print out garbage. Or, it would print out half a page, eject the piece of paper, and the print the other half on a different piece of paper. it was insane. Or- it would print half a page, and then kill my USB ports. Plus, now my USB Root Hub is completely messed up, because not even my intellimouse works on it anymore.
I still don't know why this printer doesn't work with one of my computers & win2k (my pro-intel friend John is CONVINCED that it's because it's an AMD Anthlon), but I DID get it to work on my other machine that also runs win2k (yeah yeah.. it's a celeron. Leave me alone). So right now, I just have my AMD networked to my Celeron... so yes, this printer does just fine with Win2k Networking. :)
So, if you can get this printer to work, it's absolutely incredible. It has my highest endorsements. But getting it to work is easier said than done if you're running win2k.
