2003-08-04The first time, I sent it back to Xircom and got a replacement. But if not used for a few months, it seems to start to melt down horribly.
I recommend avoiding this at all costs.
Best tip for Visor

I dont know why people here sais its a good for nothing product, I had one for about three weeks now and I am very satisfied about it. I had a small problem with it, but the fix was quite easy. The problem was that the AvantGo software that comes with this modem is bad installed and each time I tried to run it was crashing my palm so I had to do a hard reset. How I figure out this ? I just copied (with File Mover) the software from the modem into the palm memory, I made a hotsync and then I ran the avantgo software (from the backup) into the Palm OS Emulator software. This reported a problem with libmal.prc, so to fix it I downloaded avantgo software again from the (...) site, I install it on my palm , then with filemover I moved it into the modem memory (great idea this writable eprom memory for the modem). Then I restarted my palm and voila ! it worked.
With this modem I am now able to use lots of cool client software (pop3, imap, vnc, http, https, wap, ssh, telnet, yahoo messenger , IRC), and I just want to say that if there is any system administrator out there .. you have to check this out, the palmVNC and ssh clients are wonderfull. I found even a http server for my Visor !

I purchased this item in order to modem hotsync my Handspring visor. It has NEVER worked. It locks up during the sync process at User name. I tried to contact the company who, per there web site only offer email support for the product.
I finally had to call corporate headquarters to demand a replacement. To their credit, they did send me another modem. To their discredit, it had the same remarkable low quality and inherent inability to perform as the first. Fortunately they were consistant in quality. Unfortunately, the quality was extremely low.
I guess that the modem, like the army commercial was "being all it could be", however, like some soldiers, all they could be is simply not enough for the task at hand.
Never worked

It did actually dial the ISP but i got an error each time.
Crashes imminent

I have owned this modem since it was released. I bought it so I could access my AOL Mail when I was honeymooning in Maui. This thing crashes your Handspring one out of five uses. I have only been able to restore from the backup module I own successfully after a lockup once. Sometimes a soft reset will work, but usually you end up doing a hard reset.
The bonus is you can go snorkeling, shopping, and worry about you email when you get back home.
This is too pricey a module for the performance you get. Support from Xircom is virtually non-existent. They have yet to tell me what applications they do support with this modem.

Bulky, drops connections, freezes repeatedly (requiring soft reset), and hard crashed once causing loss of all data. You're outta here, Springport!
High speed, reliable at a low price

Shopping around for springboard modems, and I was a little tentative about buying the lowest priced modem. My company bought the Handspring modem (33.6K), and it worked okay, but a little pricey. The Xircom 56K is a better performer, and it has some added conveniences like the half meg of flash memory where I can store my e-mail program (which it comes with) and internet browser. It's the best deal around. Have had no problems. The three batteries seems a bit much, but they seem to last quite a while, and Xircom just issued a patch for the low battery warning which apparently was a problem.

What a great product! I've been debating on either getting a Palm or a Handspring Visor and decided to go with the Visor because of its really cool expansion slot. One of the first "must-have" modules for me was definitely the SpringPort modem. I decided on the SpringPort over the others because of its speed, apparently it's the fastest Springboard modem on the market today and you can use it Worldwide. This modem also has a wireless port to connect my GSM phone so that I can surf the web and send and receive emails via a wireless connection.
Very cool and convenient device, I don't need to lug my laptop around anymore just to get email!

Thanks to the rebate I bought this modem at a great price.
As it's a 56K modem it is much faster than Thincom's 33K speed, and it doesn't use a huge 6 foot dongle, unlike Thincom's modem. Xircom's modem has integrated connectors so I just plug in my telephone line. Besides who wants a 6 foot dongle for their handheld modem!
The battery pack is a plus, so my Visor batteries will be safe.
It is a great buy at a great price. Good job Xircom!
