It does the job

The Tiffen 58mm uv filter does the job. My main purpose is to protect the lens, which it does fine , with no noticeable optical effect. Any improvement in picture quality is a plus.

Got a "Demo" or re-stocked damaged return

I just decided I'm never purchasing low cost optics by mail again. I purchased a UV Haze and a circular polarizer. The polarizer was perfect, pristine and new. A great buy. The UV Haze had a worn case, when opened was mis-repacked with the instruction manual between the filter and the packing foam protector. The manual was well worn and obviously USED a lot. And of course the UV Haze filter was SCRATCHED. This is a glass filter with no coatings so it takes a real good ding to scratch it with a nice deep 1/4 inch scratch.
I could spend $5-$10 to return it for an exchange, and maybe I will not get a damaged one again, and maybe I will. I question any company that re-stocks an obviously damaged and very worn item. After spending for the extra postage the mail order filter will not be a very good buy.
UV filter - good price and value

FOr the most part, this is the least exciting filter you will ever purchase. Yawn! Look at it - it is clear. It does nothing that you can see. That is the point with this. Most of what it provides is protection and safety.
Note that this is NOT one of the thin type filters that allow you to stack several on a lens without getting that nasty vignetting. However, that being said, I did stack this filter and a CPL filter on the 18-55mm kit lnes yesterday with no problem.
VERY DISAPOINTED! 2008-09-22
As some of the reviews I read online had said, the package/kit of 3 filters was an overall disappointment. The polarizer was the worst. I have a six dollar pair of polaroid sunglasses I bought at Wallgreen's that remove more reflection off of objects, deepen the skys blue better than this junk. Of course the filter did not even come any where close to a Nikon filter that I've had and used for 25 years. Also as reported from others here the quality of the metal finnish and threads was bad! I sent it all back within a hour of recieving the delivery of the delivery.

It's a polarizing filter. It does what it is supposed to do. Pretty good quality, too. Using it at wide angles will cause vignetting.

The 812 warming filter, a Tiffen exclusive, improves skintones and is ideal for portraits taken on a cloudy day or outdoor in shade on a sunny day. The 812 filter absorbs blue cast often caused by electronic flash, and adds warmth to pale washed-out flesh tones.
Good for what it is 2008-09-12
Solid build, just not much use to me. It slows down the lens and don't over any more protection. The lens hood on the other hand is very helpful in that regard. Software (PS, Canon's DPP, ACDSee) is far more effective in removing haze than this. I bought a few filters of various kind out of curiosity in the beginning now they are all collecting dust ...
No Complaints 2008-08-29
I had just recieved this for my Canon Digital Rebel XTi Camera and it works great! Just screw it into the lens and you are set and ready to go! The price I found on this was $6.99 and does not change often if at all when I have checked...For that price it is absolutly great because it saves a lens thats worth $500
Great value for inexpensive lenses 2008-08-01
At a range between $7 and $10, this is one of the best values and investments out there. What is it actually used for? A UV filter has two primary purposes: to filter out unwanted ultra-violet light and to protect the lens. For most general photography applications, you will not notice the difference in UV light. Only when you have intense sunlight at a specific angle will you start to notice the UV light. It will not alter your photos and their lighting negatively, so you can pretty much leave this filter on all the time. This filter doesn't do that great of a job in actually filtering out harsh light at the ultra-violet spectrum, but if you're an amateur photographer, you won't need that function. If you do encounter a lot of harsh UV light (you live out in the desert or in Alaska), then you should consider a different filter. As an advanced but non-professional photographer who averages 500 photos indoors and outdoors per week, I have not yet encountered any harsh UV light that this filter cannot block.
I use this on my Canon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens, and I pretty much never take it off. This filter will protect your lens from scratches to the glass. When you get smudges (which you will) on this filter, you just wipe the filter or remove it and clean it. It's much easier to clean this filter than the glass on the lens. But the most important part is that this filter serves as insurance for your lens. If something comes flying at your lens, you have a choice of replacing a $7 filter or a $150 lens. It's a no-brainer!
Now, this filter is useful for either the amateur photographer or the advanced photographer who has a relatively cheap lens (a $150 lens is considered CHEAP compared to $950 for the Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 IS). If you own a more expensive lens, you'd want to go with a better filter, such as one from Hoya or B+W. But if you own the Canon Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 IS or an L lens, you know that already.
All in all, I gave this filter 5 stars because of its great value. If it costs $20, I would have reduced it to 4 stars. Considering its use, you cannot beat this product.
great filters 2008-07-27
Tiffen is always a good call if you need filters. They consistently make good glass, and they are relatively inexpensive filters, especially on Amazon.
