Parachutes

Once I listened to the Viva La Vida CD, I went back and purchased all of Coldplay's previous albums. This is one truly awesome!
Chris Martin's Biggest Mistake.....
2008-09-06
For someone who says he's going to be bigger then U2 this album is by far has one of the worst songs ever written. That belongs to the song Yellow. Not only is it a pointless song it's one of the worst songs in history. One reason it was because it was so overplayed.
The other reason is because Chris Martin sounds like a prepubescent little girl whining at mom for not buying her those thong panties at Victoria Secrets. Not only that he fails miserably at his attempt to be better then U2. In fact most of his other albums sound the same with that whininess. The only good song that Coldplay has come out with is Clocks. Every other song is horrible. The only reason why he even is able to sell a cd is because some women think he's hot. They don't listen to him on his musical ability.
Chris Martin is more of the Jonas Brothrs. At least the Jonas Brothers have a chance to have their voice change when they hit puberty, Chris Martin hit puberty and still sounds like a prepubescent little boy. I'm sorry what is the world coming too with such worthless songs as Yellow!
why why why the radiohead comparisons?
2008-06-14
Seriously, stop already with the Radiohead comparisons. This sounds nothing like Radiohead, not Pablo Honey, not The Bends, not ANYTHING EVER by Radiohead. Just because Coldplay's singer tries to sing in a high register like Thom Yorke sings, doesn't necessarily mean the two bands sound alike. Coldplay, for instance, sucks big ones. Radiohead is sort of a brilliant band. There's one difference right there, just for starters.
But whatever, you're not a loser or anything if you like this garbage. Lots of people like garbage even worse than this! So there, feel good knowing that you're not utterly, totally, hopelessly devoid of taste (maybe).
We Live in a Beautiful World

This is beautiful music. I distinctly recall direct comparisons to Radiohead at the time of this release, and I must say, I can draw virtually no comparisons between the two artists. Radiohead stinks. Radiohead is useless noise. Coldplay really delivers some beautiful, oftentimes powerful melodies throughout this disc. Sentimental moments abound here. Minimalism WORKS when it is executed correctly, and "Parachutes" is a testament to that. This album is extremely relaxing and even gives me the chills at times. Songs like "Don't Panic", "Shiver", "Sparks", and "Trouble" are tremendous achievements. Solid album through and through from a terrific band.
Yet another hit!

Coldplay delivers yet another hit album. Parachutes delivers on the growing quality of Coldplay repertoire. You won't be disappointed with picking this up, especially if you are already aware with what Coldplay did with their full album debut.
I have the excellent U.S. release and thought I'd put in my 2 cents.

"A spiderweb and I'm caught in the middle."

Coldplay gets some crap in more serious circles because of their sappiness and pandering to the mainstream, but at least on their debut album, they ain't bad. At times singer Chris Martin's falsetto can get annoying, but in general he fits the tone he's creating, and while the lyrics are never as deep or touching as he seems to want them to be, they get the job done without being too egregious. His piano playing can be a bit simple, but he can come up with simple tunes that are still effective and catchy. The instrumentation isn't particularly important to their style, but their guitarist is competent at his job of keeping things lively and nothing about the rhythm is bad either. Really, it's not bad music. Stop making fun of me for listening to girl stuff.
Like a lot of albums that aren't great but aren't bad either, Parachutes starts stronger than it ends. "Don't Panic" is short but lets you know what's up, with a nice, high pitched guitar line and pleasant vocals. "Shiver" is one of the harder songs because of its thicker, distorted guitar, but hard is a relative term with this band. "Spies" has an acoustic, slightly off-kilter sound, and it's pretty good at being something other than the love ballads they're known for. "Yellow" is the single that got them noticed, and it's a bit simple, but still well-executed and an enjoyable song. It's followed by "Trouble", with the nice piano and swelling chorus. Martin's probably the most obnoxious sounding on this one, but it doesn't ruin the rest of the song. There are some more songs afterward, they all follow the same pattern, neither painful to listen to nor really memorable. The only reason I ever get mainstream stuff like this is because I find it cheap, but I can still gleam some fun out of it.
Still my favorite.

This is the album of theirs that started it all for me, and to my ears, it is still their best. I very much enjoy their new albums but the compliation of tracks on this disc is varied and exciting. Really, I can't not recommend this disc to any fan of well crafted music. Some will claim that the musical ideas of repetative, not much unlike some electronic and trance music, and while I agree to that on some level, all music is repetative in nature. The point is that they are creating musical repetitions that are intersting and one would want to hear over and over. Really, i'm not doing this album justice in this here review. I'll just say that if you like some rock/folk music with really singable/catch melodies then this one is worth a try for sure.
I was *so* wrong about this CD. And it brings me great joy to be!

It's very, very mellow.
Anyway, at first, none of the songs really stood out...
But flash forward 7-8 months, and this is quite a nice, relaxing, and very, very soothing alternative CD.
And Chris Martin's voice for the most part, fits right in!
My favorite songs are:
Spies (great underrated lyrics I never understood till now)
Don't Panic
High Speed
Sparks
Trouble (nice piano)
I now own all 3 of Coldplay's albums. I think that this album is there very, very best, and they expanded their sound, to reach the masses with A Rush of Blood to the Head. It was nearly as good, but less unique than this CD. X&Y was most definitely the weakest link.
But all of the CDs have at least 4 inspiring tracks on them.
I really like the upbeat numbers that they do; Clocks, Daylight, Speed Of Sound, Fix You and Square One are amongst my favorites!
This CD should be owned by most alternative music fans. As a MATTER OF FACT, do your friend a favor, and spread some love this Christmas by buying them this! They will love its mellow and calming vibe. It's in-describe-able!! Seriously. It's so lovely, that I'm at a BIG loss of words.
I don't know if I've said this already, but when I initially purchased this from Best Buy for 13 bucks, and got it home, I was thinking, "This doesn't stand out much."
But these days, it's definitely one of THE BEST alternative CD I own. It's perfection. You know they've found something special when the skit on the album perfectly blends into the next song.
So if You've had a hard day at work, kick off your shoes and socks, turn the damn phone OFF, and pop this into your CD/DVD player. Smoke something nice, get a cappuccino, and just L-I-S-T-E-N. Most of all, R-E-L-A-X.
I have no regrets buying this one.
5 stars.
