The Original Kings of Comedy achieves the seemingly impossible task of capturing the rollicking and sly comedy routines of stand-up and sitcom vets Steve Harvey, D.L. Hughley, Cedric the Entertainer, and Bernie Mac and the magic of experiencing a live concert show. Director Spike Lee and his crew plant a multitude of cameras in a packed stadium and onstage (as well as backstage, as they follow the comedians) to catch the vivid immediacy of the show, which is as much about the audience as it is about the jokes. And the jokes are funny.
All four riff fast and furiously (and with much swearing) on the world in terms of race, family, sex, and in one routine, outer space. Hughley takes comedic aim at extreme sports and eating disorders, while Cedric harks back to the day when gang fights meant calling opponents out onto the dance floor. Bernie Mac, the self-confessed id comedian of the group, presents a routine that is simultaneously offensive and hilarious--an apt reminder that comedy can and should be vicious if we are ever to learn to laugh at ourselves and hopefully be the better for it. Harvey, who acts as the MC for the show, has some transcendent moments with the crowd (a '70s slow jam sing-along, anyone?) that have to be seen to be believed. There's no doubt as to why Kings was a hit with concert and movie audiences; the laughs keep coming, in the tradition of Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy, with a sharp eye on the nuances of today's racially affected culture. --Shannon Gee

This is not funny

I was greatly disappointed in this comedy standup. There were very few moments of laughter. I would highly recommend Chris Rock's Never Scared. These 4 guys couldn't even fill 1 hour and 30 minutes worth of jokes when Chris was able to make great jokes for 1 hour and 30 minutes. The jokes were not socially concious and did not teach the audience anything valuable about life. They all joked about how white people are opposed to black people, all four of them joked on that subject alone, that was completely dry comedy, they had nothing else to joke about so they all joked about the same thing. Luckily I didn't pay too much money for it but I'm going to have to sell it to someone for a lot less than what I paid for it, save your money and time, don't watch this.

Although this show dates way back when, it is a priceless piece of comedy. This is a dvd that can be dusted off time and time again and still hold it's weight against the rest.Having originally bought the dvd on a trip to the US and subsequently had it borrowed and never returned, I just had to get myself another. A lot of today's up and coming comedians can learn a lot from these guys.
The host Steve Harvey holds the crowd whilst the main acts strut their stuff, each with their own individual style.If it's laughter you want............ nuff said........GET YOUR COPY!

Purchased this for my boyfriend over at Iraq. I've watched this myself multiple times and absolutely love it. Its really funny and I'm not usually into stand up comedy. A must see!
The most overrated show on the planet

I meant everything I said in that title. Steve Hardly, DL Ugly, Pathetic The Entertainer and Bernie Wac are the most unfunny people on the planet. All Steve Hardly(Fraggle Rock looking motherf-) does is talk loud and that is what passes for comedy? Pathetic The Entertainer and Bernie Wac's routine put me to sleep and DL Ugly did the same exact routine from the Showtime special he had. These high-class coons are most likely to be embraced by mindless sheep too stupid to realize something wrong about 4 grown men talking about absolutely nothing. Just you average chittlin circuit routine. All that was missing from this show was all 4 of them putting on women's clothes and defiling the sacred image of the black elderly women. The Queens Of Comedy: does anybody realize how lame Sommless has gotten over the years? Her routine was unfunny and tasteless-- a bunch of sophomoric jokes about sex, how old is she? 15? Miss Whora needs to glue that horsehair on her head and stop taking it off every 5 minutes when it's clear that nobody finds it funny. Adele Givens routine is just as bland as her character and we'll leave it at that. Ho'nique aka Porkeisha Pig was the worst of them all. All she did was curse excessively while picking on skinny people. Only a whacko would find humor in being the twin sister of the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man. The bottom line: is what I wrote on the header of this review. The Original Kings And Queens Of Comedy is the most overrated show on the planet. Nothing funny comes out of their treacherous mouths. Just mindless jokes from spineless puppets that we should have rushed to the floor a long time ago. Its a sad state of affairs when we defend these modern day jesters from the criticism they rightfully deserve. None of them have anything interested to say. Just hackneyed jokes that we've heard a thousand times over from ever other comic. Thanks a lot guys for setting us back 500 years with this trash. Nothing to see hear folks, just some foot-shuffling, toe-tapping, self-hating, buck dancing clowns!

Real funny, apart from the Steve Harvey dissing hip hop, but is real funny , My man Spike also did a good Job.

I remember initially watching this years ago with my girl and nearly regurgitated my pizza and drink as I laughed too hard. Sadly, this time round I bearly craked a laugh. *worried* has my sense of humour gone with my age and wisdom?! Anyway, the comedians are all very funny and it's great to watch.
We need a Professional version of "The Last Comic Standing." 2008-05-06
Raucous, romping, rollicking, and irreverent, with this DVD, these four comedians have made themselves rich, famous, and have secured their respective positions in the Comedy Hall of Fame.
D.L. Hughley and Bernie Mac are obviously the hungriest and the funniest of the lot. Their skits resonate with a truth deep within and close to the soul.
What this DVD proves is that what we need now is a contest between, not the best "non-professional comedians," like in the "Last Comic standing," but among the best professional comedians. Between the late Richard Pryor, Kat Williams, Chris Rock, Capone, Bernie Mac, D.L. Hughley, Eddie Murphy, Dave Chapelle, Wanda Sykes, Henry Cho, Robin Williams, Jeff Foxworthy, Ron White and Larry the Cable Guy, among others.
Yeah, I know that comedy is rooted in tribal experiences, but the one playing field where there are no racial field markers or boundaries, is comedy: Funny is funny.
Hmm ...maybe I'll try to promote this tour myself?
