Good For What it does, Bad Documentation
2005-09-16
I was told by a Linksys Rep that this item can be used extend the range of my network. After wasting many hours with Technical people that did not know what they were taliking about I spoke to a level 2 technition who explained that the purpose of this device is to plug into a wired network and enable it to be wireless. What I needed was a range extender. I Did use it for my wired network at work and it does work for that purpose.
Research before you buy

Be sure you know exactly what you need before you buy when it comes to Linksys products. Just because it is "wireless" and conforms to the 801.11b standard, doesn't mean it's going to be compatible to other Linksys wireless products. If in doubt about a particular application, ask the Linksys helpline. It turns out this WAP will not communicate with my router. The lights on the front sure are pretty though!

I purchase two WAP11s and am using them in the bridge mode to create a wireless link between two networks. The distance between the two access points is over 1,270 ft. with a few trees blocking the line of sight. This required the installation of two exterior 9dB antenna, however I am not using any type of add on amplifier. The system seems to function exactly as I expected and the software setup for this mode of operation is very simple. These units use older 802.11b technology, yet the speed is quite acceptable for my simple installation. At less than $ 20.00 each I am very pleased with the performance of these APs.
Generally buggy - a popular choice for no good reason

I can't stress how much stress this device has caused. It seems that it's going to do the job properly and then insidious problems creep in that get worse and worse until everything goes horribly wrong.
Terrible support and worse companion products mean that this access point will cost you more in sweat and tears than any other piece of electronics you may own - and it's unlikely to get better due to this area of gadgetry 'moving on' to new faster standards.
Advice is - if you want to stick to cheap and cheerfull 802.11b hardware - avoid linksys kit like the plague and keep doing your research to find a good alternative.
Waste of time and money

Although the unit indicated it had power and was linked to the network the set-up software could not find it. I will have spent $16 and hours of frustration by the time I ship it back. Tech support was useless.
Slow but reliable

This linksys product has worked for me reliably under a variety of conditions. I would recommend these units to anyone trying to make a short range wireless bridge or a wifi hotspot.
OK if you know what you are doing.

When I bought this item from "alectrics" it was very cheap, about $20. Now I see the price is up I would get a more modern unit. I alredy owned 3 WAP11's so I needed this to be compatable in a relay type system. Linksys is notroious for having incompatablities between different version of the same model, so beware if you need special features as you may need matched versions, not just matched models. I use this WAP11 as a range extender for my other WAP11's and it works very well.... BECAUSE the versions are an exact match! Don't ignore this warning, I did and it cost me to make it right. A note about buying from "alectrics". I had given them a good review (5) but they kept sending me messages begging for a 5 rating. After the third message in two months I withdrew my reccomendation.

Your Lowest Price has the best customer service. I love buying from this company,
What a failure...

I bought two of those and I could have written a 5 star review back then, like many people did. Out of the box, its a joy...but after less than 2 years, the failed one after the other and Linksys support said this was common hardward failure. A big waste of money.
Does anyone know what Version Amazon is selling here?
2005-10-07
There is no mention of it and the manual appears to be for a different version than what is on Linksys's website. There doesn't appear to be anyway to ask Amazon a question about this.
