Story of my life. I always get the fuzzy end of the lollipop. 2008-09-06

1959's classic Some Like it Hot is one of the best movies of all time, the end.

When Joe(Tony Curtis) and Jerry(Jack Lemmon) two best friends and musicians, accidentally witness a mob murder, they've got to drop everything and run away to the next best thing; which in this case happens to be dressing up as women and stowing away on an all women's band traveling to Florida.(of course!)

"Don't look now, the whole town is under water."

On the train they meet Sugar(Marilyn Monroe) the most beautiful disaster of a singer, who becomes great friends with them when Daphne(or known previously as Jerry) saves her from getting in trouble for carrying a flask.

If that wasn't enough Joe's falling for Sugar, and in his desperation dresses up as a billionaire in order to woo her; While at the same time Jerry seems to have forgotten he's really a boy, and is engaged to a millionaire himself!

A tale of great web tangling, lying, deceit, love, and a great, great deal of comedy.

A classic by any definition.

This movie is HOT, HOT, HOT... 2008-09-05
I'm a recent member of the Billy Wilder fan club, but I'm quickly rising in the ranks for in all honestly I have yet to see a film he has done that has not met with my wildest of expectations. At the moment I've only seen four, but all four (`Sunset Boulevard', `The Apartment', `Double Indemnity' and now `Some Like it Hot'; in that order) are five star films and would most likely make my top 100 films of all time.

`Some Like it Hot' has been a film I have been itching to watch for a long time now. I remember seeing the stage production quite a few years back (at a dinky dinner theater at that) and I remember loving it, even if the production values were a little weak. The story was cute and well executed and I just knew that the film must be stellar, especially with Lack Lemmon in the lead (just love that guy). Still, I had never pushed myself hard enough to actually see the movie. That is until the other night when it was playing on TCM and I just knew I had to take the opportunity to actually watch this classic. I was so pleased with the end result, a comedy that works on every level brilliantly, that I had to watch it again immediately after the credits began to roll (the beauty of a DVR).

`Some Like it Hot' tells the story of two band members, Joe and Jerry, who wind up on the run after witnessing the St. Valentine's Day Massacre. With no where to go they decide to don drag costumes and join an all female band on the road to Florida. Once there both Joe and Jerry (or should I say Josephine and Daphne) meet many obstacles in their hideout, not the least of them is lead singer Sugar Kane Kowalczyk, the boozy blonde who has sworn off love until the right type of millionaire comes along. While Joe tries to become that millionaire, Jerry finds himself dodging the advances of Osgood Fielding III, a skirt chasing divorcee (multiple times now) who is enamored with Daphne's feminine charm. Couple this with the advancing threat of gangster and you have one perfectly complete comedy that hits its mark every single time.

The script is flawlessly crafted, delivery smart and sassy dialog as well as off the wall gags and brilliant character development, allowing us to get to know everyone in the cast and grow to appreciate their predicaments.

The script is embellished by the stunning cast. In all actuality it stuns me that only Lemmon was singled out as Oscar worthy (he was the only actor in the bunch to receive an Oscar nomination; losing to Charlton Heston) when in fact the entire cast is flawless. Yes, Lemmon is the comedic highlight, and his antics are surely best-in-show, but Tony Curtis should have also received a nomination alongside his screen partner for delivering a truly tender and believable performance as the lovelorn Joe. Marilyn Monroe, who won the Golden Globe for her performance, should have also received a nomination, for her performance is iconic. She is the superlative example of what an enticing ditzy blonde should be, and she sets the standard that so many other actresses have failed to live up to. Joe E. Brown steals every scene he's in as Osgood, and his lack of an Oscar nomination is truly saddening.

But this movie is all about Billy Wilder, a director who understands his actors and understands his material and works to deliver a complete film, one that covers all the bases so-to-speak and lives up to his name. So far I've seen four masterpieces by this man, and I have a feeling that the rest are just as impressive.

Jack Lemon,Tony Curtis and Marilyn Monroe were outstanding in this move. I rate this as a classic comedy.

Still funny after all these years! 2008-08-17
2009 marks the 50th anniversary of this release by Billy Wilder. To this date it's a movie that has stood the test of time in comedy!Tony Curtis,Jack Lemmon and Marilyn Monroe are first rate funny in this hilarious romp of a 1929 all girls band with Curtis and Lemmon dressed up in drag to avoid being caught George Raft and company. It's comedy at its best! I am glad to add this to my collection!

CLASSIC FILM WITH A NICE NEW DVD UPGRADE! 2008-08-04
I bought the new collector's edition of 'Some Like It Hot' a few months ago and I am just getting around to watching it. The film is a classic with Lemmon, Curtis and Monroe in top form with help from a great cast of character actors. This Billy Wilder film has held up really well and now it's got a worthy release. The new 2 disc edition sports a ton of extras and a fantastic print and transfer!

Some Like it Hot 2008-07-29
Delightful/High Energy comedy involving 2 guys who become cross dresser to escape the mob and find work in an all-girl jazz band during the roaring 20's. Marilyn Monroe is fabulously sexy as the dizzy blond who Tony Curtis pursues when not working. Jack Lemmon is a riot as the reluctant partner of Tony who is pursued by Joe E. Brown, a dirty old man. Although the movie is presented in black and white it was a "hoot" and very enjoyable to watch.

'Some Like It Hot' : Dizzy Delight 2008-07-29
'Some Like It Hot' is hilarious. It is a movie I saw in the theater when it first came out. It was funny then; it is funnier now. My sister and I watched the movie together and laughed out loud all the way through. We had both forgotten how the movie began and how it ended. It has, as indicated, been a long time! The movie begins with THE shoot-out in Chicago where two musicians get an eyeful of the exits of gangland's worst. The musicians (guys, of course) make their escape from Chicago by going under cover with an all-girl band headed for Miami. Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis were in their youthful heydays, both falling for Marilyn Monroe's character, "Sugar". Watch it and have fun. It's in black and white for those who prefer their "drama" that way.

Entertaining Even To This Day! 2008-05-24
This movie is still entertaining today even though much of the humour has eroded over the years although it's easy to see why this film would have been a side-splitting laugh fest when it was first released. Today, films about men in drag don't evoke as much humour as when it was first done to such blatant use in this film. I remember when I first watched "Tootsie" when it was first released that I thought it was hilarious too until I watched it again recently and then realised that most of the humour doesn't age all that well. That said, this film is still entertaining although to call it hilarious for today's audiences would be a gross exaggeration; however to call this a light-hearted, entertaining and funny film would be much more accurate.

Jack Lemmon is very deserving of his Best Actor Oscar nomination as he is excellent here and so is Tony Curtis who is great in both his drag and rich man imposter roles. Marilyn Monroe is great in her usual seductive and comedic role although I still think she was better in "The Seven Year Itch" and she certainly put on quite a bit of weight here since that film a few years earlier too.

Just like in "From Here To Eternity" set in Hawaii I think it a great waste that a film set in a place as beautiful as Florida was shot in black and white and hence failing to take advantage of the inherent beauty of the setting. I understand the intention of director Wilder to play down the garishness of the drag make-up but I think if anything that to shoot this film in colour would not only improve the setting aesthetically but it would also make it a lot more humourous and outrageous.

The dvd hasn't been restored though and so the picture quality is poor with the dreaded black circles appearing near the top right hand corner from time to time. The sound quality is good but not great and I hope they release a better quality restored picture quality on Blu-ray.

Funny, lighthearted entertainment that ages pretty well although you should probably get the better, restored version.

Recommended.

Marilyn, Tony, & Jack at their best! 2008-05-13
How could this film be less than hilarious! The timeless comedic devices of cross-dressing, confusion, and sex make this comedy a classic!

Marilyn is superb (although all the filming troubles are well known now, you cannot detect them in the final product), Tony Curtis is just great, but no one touches Jack Lemmon's portrayal of "Daphne."

Laugh out loud funny! I highly recommend it to everyone!
