Patience Required, Maybe
2008-05-31
I like an electric mower so when my older B&D MM600 died, I bought this model.
Maybe B&D needs to work on quality control. I remember the first MM600 went up in smoke the first time I used it, and I had to get a replacement, which worked fine for ten years; now, my first MM675 was defective - the height control refused to stay in place and just dropped unpredictably to its lowest setting ("scalp"). But the replacement seems to work just fine. But how many customers will have the patience to survive a dud and go back for more?
Other than that, the machine works very well. It's light, quiet, and convenient; mulches very well; the flip handle is convenient; the increased power (compared to its predecessor model) is welcome, and the streamlining of the undercarriage plus the revamped discharge chute mean the machine stays a lot cleaner.
My only suggestion for improvement is something that can be said about a lot of mowers, gas or electric: the range of height settings is wrong. On the low end, who needs a mower that cuts down to ground level; on the high end, some grasses (according to B&D's own recommendation) should be cut at 4 inches, but 3 1/2 is the maximum cutting height the machine provides.
Impressed with my B&D electric mower

I purchased my Black & Decker Lawn Hop electric mower, with the flip handle about 2 months ago. I'm very impressed with the capabilities of this mower. It does an excellent job of cutting/mulching. It is much lighter in weight than my gas powered mower, which makes it much easier to move up and down stairs from the front to back yards. This is my first electric mower, so managing the power cord does take some getting used to, but is not a big deal. I have the version with the flip handle which is really useful for ensuring the power cord stays away from the mower. I keep my grass fairly long 2.5-3 inches and it seems to have no problems or loss of power cutting the grass. I highly recommend this mower.
B&D Flip-Handle Lawn hog is great

In my life I've used every kind of mower there is. It all depends on the size of the lawn. Currently I have just 1800 sq ft with only one tree in it, so I was considering either a push reel mower or an electric. I wanted to go green but I was wary of effort using a push reel mower. I borrowed one and boy did I find out. They don't get the edges of your lawn because the wheels are in the way and it requires a lot of physical effort. I planned how I would mow the law with an electric and bought the B&D lawn hog FOR the flip handle. I love it. I have to mow often (every week) because it doesn't do well on long grass, but othewrwise it works great. You will need two more things to complete you lawn maintenance package -- An electric string trimmer and a Wonder Winder cord management device also available on Amazon. The Wonder Winder takes all the hassel out of dealing with the electric cord.
Enjoy It Before It Falls Apart

This MM 675 is a great mower when it is in one piece. You need to watch as you mow for parts falling off (screws, etc) or one day the whole under carriage will fall off. For me it lasted one season, which I consider expensive for a $200-250 electric mower. The first one I got (new) had a broken handle, and I had to get another before I received credit on this one as my grass was growing quickly !! The flip handle works nicely until it begins to slip. Finally this week the engine began to smoke and stopped dead as I was mowing slowly on a medium high lawn, so they can not accuse me of stalling the mower on thick high grass. I hope I get so sort of refund or replacement, but looking at other reviews I am hesitant, and am looking for a different brand, but which one ?
Not bad for small to medium yards

We switched to an electric mower after our gas mower gave out after only 3 years. Our city was offering substantial discounts for switching from gas to electric, so we thought this would be a good time to try an electric.
It's quiet, and it does a great job of cutting as long as you don't let the lawn grow too tall. We usually have damp spring weather so it can be tricky timing the days to get dry enough grass. With the gas mower we used to mow once a week. Now with the electric we've gone to mowing two times a week. I have to say the lawn actually looks a lot better with more frequent mowing--so it's more than worth the inconvenience. No problems with mulching as other people have mentioned. It is able to handle about 1000 sq ft of lawn in our yard with no problems.
A couple of pointers I got from other people who have had electric mowers. Make sure you use at least 14 gauge extension cord (the smaller the number the better), and don't try to chew through heavy grass. I'm told that not following these guidelines will shorten the life of the mower.
I have found the flip handle to be a gimmmick. I think it is easier to just turn the mower most of the time. The one situation where the flip handle comes in handy is for storage. When we park the mower in our very small garage, the handle used to stick out and take up extra space. Now we just park the mower in a corner and move the flip handle up and out of the way.
All in all, a very good mower. It's just a matter of finding a mowing pattern that keeps the cord out of the way.
Great when it is working

So I bought this mower in the spring after not having had a mower for about 10 years. It had some nice features like the flip over handle and it was a mulching mower and thanks to Amazon---a GREAT price. It worked right out of the box and I was a happy mower until yesterday when I went to mow there was no power. I checked everything it could be but no luck. Will contact Black and Decker today and see what they do since it is obviously still under warranty...
Really good

This mower is excellent. What more to say? Only one complaint: The black plastic near the orange handle to turn it on needs to be filed down. When I went to use it for the first time it was so sharp it cut my finger a bit.
Well worth it

the flip handle is great and the mower runs like a champ. i was only interested in electric because of the price of gas...not the environment aspect because i dont really care about that. i was surprised that its got just as much power as a gas mower and is much lighter. buy this mower, you wont regret it.
Flip-handle makes this mower superior

I have a small yard and have been using an electric mower with a cord for years. When my old mower(manufactured by another company)died, I decided to try the Black and Decker with a flip handle, and I am very happy that I did. It is incredible how much easier it is to manage the cord. I can now mow my lawn in about 3/4 the time it used to take, as I am no longer expending time and energy wrestling with the cord to keep it out from under the mower. The mower has ample power to mow even my over-grown grass.
for a beautiful lawn

The Black and Decker electric mower with a flip handle is terrific! I bought it to replace one that was about 3 years old but that had been severely damaged by a water meter cover that sprung up from its place when the mower ran over it... somebody had loosened the cover and not replaced it. But this new mower is far superior to the one ir replaced, and, except for hsving to pay for it, I came out far ahead. I'm really pleased with it; it couldn't be better.
