Windows XP Instructions

First uninstall the game (if it's installed) then proceed.
- Click Start
- Click My Computer
- Right-click on your CD drive icon
- Click Search
- Type *.exe
- Press Enter then wait for the search to complete
About 18 files should have been found.
For each of those files, perform the following six steps:
1. Right click on the file
2. Click Properties
3. Click on the Compatibility tab
4. Check the box next to "Run this program in compatibility mode for:"
5. Choose Windows 95 from the drop-down list
6. Click OK
(Yes, you need to repeat those six steps for every file.)
That's it.
Now the game should install and work fine.
Be sure to install QuickTime when asked to during the installation process.
NOTE:
While playing the game, the video clips are likely to be of lower quality than they would be on an actual Windows 95 computer.
This is because your display is automatically switched to 256-color mode when the game starts, and Windows XP won't allow the video clips to play using 16-bit color while the game is running in 256-color mode.
Windows 95, however, does allow this.
If you discover a way to force XP to show the clips in 16-bit color, please post instructions.

I prefer playing the old game that came out in the 80s/90s. This game was too cartoonish.

A classic game that has been updated with video portions. My fifth grader really enjoyed the game and has spent several enjoyable hours learning how to get around the world on his mission as a gumshoe. This game can be used educationally to teach about Geography and good information about various places around the globe.

Amazon referred my order for this game to Electronjon's. The game disk would not load onto a home computer. It was very difficiult to get Electronjon's to issue a returns authorization number. They finally did, and I returned the disk over a month ago. I have heard nothing since! The post office confirms delivery of the return to Electronjon's on April 23. The company will not respond to email or fax. I think I have lost my money. DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM ELECTRONJON'S!
Why isn't this game working? 2007-04-30
I used to play this game on my family's Windows 95 Plus (which is long gone), but when I tried to install it on my mom's XP, it refused because I did't have "up to date" quicktime. Really, quicktime was too up to date, and nothing was fixed even when I installed the quicktime that came with it. I then used my OS X mac to go into classic (OS 9) mode and it STILL is not working, this time I'm just getting the mysterious file error -49. I don't know what's with this game, it doesn't seem to want to work on anything. (I also have the old Where in the USA is Carmen Sandiego game, which works perfectly on my mac in classic mode)

Have I installed it wrong?

I enjoy playing the game and testing my knowledgee of the countries of the world. However, when "the chief" is talking she "stutters" and repeats her words - which is very distracting.
I have thought of contacting the manufacturer and asking for another copy of the game but - did I install the game wrong (?). I removed it from my hard-drive and reinstalled it - with the same result.
Please send me another copy and I'll try it. Other than this problem - the game runs fine.

i guess i didn't realize that carmen san diego software is somewhat old and newer systems have much updated fancier versions of quicktime, that will not run carmen. making this cd completely non usable.!!!
i have recently bought a mac, but know that this will also probably not work since mac also has very updated version of quicktime, also resolution has to be dummied down to only 256 colors, it is non operable in millions of colors that all new pc and mac systems have.
the main point: make sure older game software is compatible.
also thank goodness i did not spend much.
