Indelible childhood favorite

I cut my B-spoof teeth on this movie as a preteen...and learned to practice the obscure art of elevator dancing.
Even though, as seen by countless other reviews ahead of mine, there are a few random musical bits thrown in for no reason...overall, the movie as a whole does a good job of presenting the audience with an "innocent" side of social satire.
I was sitting at my desk singing "cheery bim-bim beery bim-bum bum beery bum beery bum I diddle-um"...the whole time I was typing this. Evidently even the unneccessary parts can be important.
One of my All Time Favorite Movies

One of Julie Andrews best. It is fast paced for some critics, kind of campy. But I love this movie very much.

The Epitome of the Jazz Age! 2007-08-02
Thoroughly Modern Millie is an excellent reminder of all of the fun of the 1920s in America. It features all sorts of tributes to the era from the style of music, the costumes, homages to silent films, and the overall feeling of fun. The story is silly, but never in a way to alienate its audience. Millie (Julie Andrews) has come to New York to become the stenographer of a rich man and to marry him. She bobs her curls and wears knee length skirts. Soon she meets Miss Dorothy (Mary Tyler Moore) who has come to New York to become an actress. She has no family or friends in the world, which makes her the perfect target of Mrs. Mears (Beatrice Lillie), the owner of the hotel that Millie and Miss Dorothy stay at. Mrs. Mears is involved in a slavery racket in which she kidnaps young girls with no ties to the world. However, Mrs. Mears has no luck in getting Miss Dorothy, and Miss Dorothy has plenty of time to meet friends including Jimmy (James Fox), Muzzy (Carol Channing), and Millie's boss, Trevor Grayden (John Gavin).
This film features standards like "Baby Face" and "Do It Again" as well as modern songs written for the show like the title track and "Jimmy." However, every song sounds like it was written during the 20s, so each suits the film well.
This movie is very long, but that doesn't seem to matter. The performances are excellent, the music fits in very well, and there is constant action. The film never drags. Film makers often have trouble capturing the spirit of an era when doing projects like this one, but Thoroughly Modern Millie is a surprisingly accurate and fresh tribute.

This musical is just pure fun - jazzy music, great characters and lots of laughs. We love it!
Thoroughly Leaden Millie

Imagine ordering the most succulent. lightest. frothiest souffle imaginable, only to be served something made out of marble. I don't know how it happened: Julie Andrews tries her best to inflate this lead balloon of a movie with her wonderful voice and her native wit, but at the point where Bea Lillie intones that "they all must die" trust me, you'll be rooting for her and her dart gun.

I haven't enjoyed a movie more in a long time than watching "Thoroughly Modern Millie." Julie Andrews was just wonderful in this film as well as Mary Tyler Moore with the added bonus of Carol Channing playing Muzzy. I was browsing on amazon for any Julie Andrews movies and this gem came up. I had never seen or heard of this film, and after watching it was not dissapointed!
Set in the "Roaring 20's", Millie (Julie Andrews) whom is looking for a husband Trevor Graydon (played by John Gavin) goes and lives in New York city at an all girls boarding house run by Mrs. Meers (Beatrice Lillie) a front-lady for an oriental white slavery ring. Miss Dorothy (Mary Tyler Moore) leaves home to find "her way in the world" also comes to New York city and meets Millie at the same boarding house. The two girls together create quite a pair in their zany, wacky ways in this madcap of a movie. The antics that happen will leave you falling off the couch with laughter!
This is a movie that the entire family would enjoy. It is funny, heart-warming, suspenseful, and thrilling. I would encourage anybody who wants clean, quality entertainment in their home to purchase a copy for their DVD library. It's a classic! Format: Color, Widescreen, 2hrs 32 min. "So beat the drums 'cause here comes thoroughly modern Millie now!" 2008-01-25
This is one of the most incredibly light hearted, and beloved musicals from the golden era of movie magic. Starring an unrivaled cast of Carol Channing, Mary Tyler Moore, and Julie Andrews as the title character Millie. The movie begins with an unexpected crime, then moves to the thoroughly traditional Millie walking the streets of 1922's New York, and updating her look to the tune of the toe tapping introductory song "Thoroughly Modern Millie". The movie keeps the pace with catchy iconic songs, and unforgettable scenes, such as the elevator that requires the riders to dance, Carol Channing being shot from a cannon, and the defeat of the Chinese slave trade. The introduction of several subplots only serves to promote the main theme, "love has everything to do with it"!
Next time you are sitting back wishing you had an exciting, family friendly, and thoroughly modern movie to keep you entertained for a few hours get this in the DVD player - ASAP!
THOROUGHLY DELIGHTFUL FUN... IF A BIT TOO LONG 2008-01-02
"THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE" is one of the funniest films I've ever seen-- right up there with the screwball classic "BRINGING UP BABY" (1938) and the Best of the early Shorts from THE THREE STOOGES (1934-1936) in terms of pure, silly. film farce.
I find it hard to believe that this wild and wacky spoof of the 1920's is cause for a small debate. Yes, the depiction of the Oriental characters is terribly stereotypical; but, remember, this is a farce, and NOTHING in it should be taken SERIOUSLY. How serious can things be when Julie Andrews and Mary Tyler Moore foil a white-slavery operation run by dragon-lady Beatrice Lillie?
I saw the stage adaptation and it is god-awful TERRIBLE. There is no way to top the film's dream comedy cast.
Carol Channing is completely over the top as Muzzy. Simply run to the kitchen and grab a quick snack while Channing "sings." Mercifully, she only sings two songs. Vivacious flapper Millie provides Julie Andrews with one of her best film roles; showcasing her skills as an excellent comedienne. Beatrice Lillie is a hilarious hoot as Mrs. Meers. So, don't think about it too much. Just sit back, relax, and laugh with this old-fashioned and very funny film farce.

This is a wonderful movie with Julie Andrews at her best. Light, fun and really entertaining - like all her movies you can watch it over and over again!
