Can't recommend them highly enough. If you love intelligent scripts, perfect comic timing and some unique situations all of which are just plain funny, funny, funny - - then please purchase this set. Fawlty Towers - The Complete Series

We always enjoyed watching Fawlty Towers when it was first released in Canada back in the late 70's. Now we can watch it as often as we wish and have a good laugh.
One of the best comedy shows ever done anywhere on the planet!

In this spectacular BritCom, Monty Python's John Cleese stars as a disgruntled hotel owner named Basil Fawlty. He cowrote the show with then-wife Connie Booth, who plays the maid, Polly Sherman. Cleese and Booth divorced after Season 1, and it took a while 'til they could work together again to write and star in Season 2. After that, they could not work together anymore, and it's a real shame that only 2 seasons of this brilliant comedy was ever made. Prunella Scales plays Fawlty's wife, Sybill, a bit of a shrew who always has more important things to do than helping to run the hotel. And Andrew Sachs plays the mousy Spanish bellhop, Manuel, who tries to be a good employee, but his efforts are hampered by the fact that he doesn't speak English. Basil is short-tempered, rude to the guests, trying to raise the hotel's standards while remaining cheap and overall, unpleasant. Guests range from brazen French women, obnoxious Americans, people who think their dogs are people, senile retired Army Majors, confidence tricksters, old ladies who complain about everything but refuse to turn on their hearing aids, and people who have the nerve to die in bed overnight. Also they have to deal with hotel inspectors, drunken gay gourmet chefs, snobs, incompetent builders/construction workers and the health department...not to mention a psychiatrist, and even Germans! Every episode is a classic! This is truly one of the best and funniest sitcoms ever made anywhere on the planet!
HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Fawlty Towers DVD

This is a great classic British Comidy from the 1970's. I loved it then, and it is still as funny in 2008.

The worst hotelier you can't stop watching

Basil Fawlty (John Cleese) is far from a perfect man. In fact he's a terrible terrible person. But you end up overlooking that fact for the simple reason that he makes you laugh. Most of the scrapes he gets himself into would be easily taken care of if he could simply tell the truth. But that concept is foreign to him.
This series ran the perfect amount of time, ending while it was still hilarious. Each episode is a unique story, never retreading old ground. If you are a fan of the British use of both irony and farce, this is a virtual treasure trove of humor.
MUST see TV

This show was and remains lightyears ahead of anything on American TV. From start to finsih, it is sheer brilliance. The ebtire case is hysterical and the chemistry between the characters is just obvious. Who doesn't remember the Rat inspector episode? How can one forget Mrs. Richards???? Is that a piece of your brain???? This is the best comedy ever produced; Cleese is a genius!!

One of the funniest British Comedies of all times. Delightful to watch. Written with intelligence, this is a must have in any video collection. I am always seeing something new and laughing out loud every time I put this DVD in the player to watch.
Great Comedy
2008-06-14
There are full descriptions of the episodes in other reviews. Fawlty Towers is one of the best comedy series ever produced. Every episode is composed of a number of story lines; each wrapping around the others. John Cleese said that he and Connie Booth would lay out a long roll of paper and write ideas across the length of it interweaving the ideas so that they all came together at the end into a very funny episode. The various characters are well crafted and each is at least a little insane. Cleese is a great physical actor (watch "The Germans" and "The Kipper and the Corpse"). I love David Kelley (Mr. O'Riley, the builder). He is a great character (you saw him in "Waking Ned Devine"). If you like great comedy, British or not, get this collection. I'll bet you'll love it.
