Editorial Review
As long as a computer is connected to the Internet--by phone line, DSL, cable, or any other means--it is vulnerable to myriad attacks from the cyber-equivalent of late-night stalkers. Norton Personal Firewall 2002 provides a virtual barrier to these attacks without requiring a doctorate in computer architecture to install and run.

Getting started is fairly simple and very straightforward. Wizards scan the system for Net-enabled programs and watch for unusual requests for access from within and outside your computer or network. After the first day or two, most users will forget that the software is running: notifications come fast and furious at first and then taper off to one or two per day at most (depending on what the user is doing on the Net). The most noticeable change in the system is a very slight delay in loading Web pages, and this only for bulky sites.

As with any computer security product, Norton Personal Firewall has an upper limit of protection it can offer, at which point the user's knowledge and expertise are required to go further. For most home users--unlikely but still possible targets for assault--Norton Personal Firewall 2002 goes far enough and should keep data safe from all but the savviest hackers. --Rob Lightner

Using a remote destop connection with Norton firewall 2005-11-03
I find Norton Personal Firewall to be a very frustrating at times. However it does its job. I tried establishing a remote desktop connection and spent many frustrating attempts before getting it to work. If you're trying to set up a remote desktop connection you first have to open the proper port (3389) then create a general rule. The rule should allow inbound connections, from a specific computer (if static IP Address) for more security or it can be set from any computer, Communications: Any (should work with local port 3389), Protocol: TCP and UDP, tracking: security alert and logging.

Useless 2003-08-13
Sure, it blocks ports... all of them! After fussing for a day to get Remote Desktop to work (and unblocking port 3389 numerous times) I finally decided I needed help. To my surprise Symantec offers NO free tech support. I surfed the "online support" (term used loosely) and found nothing referring to Remote Desktop... Finally I needed to get back to work and decided to pay the $29.95 for phone support only to get a message stating that they were too busy, please check the website for solutions.

Sure wish I could return this. It's money wasted.

Awful! 2003-04-14
I would just like to comment very briefly on this product, that all seemed to be doing well and it did manage to work very well for a number of weeks. However it completly prevented me from viewing any websites under a 'secure server' Its caused me many wasted days with little access to the net. Money down the drain for this product, avoid!

Big disappointments 2002-11-28
Norton Firewall 2003 failed to install correctly on my Windows XP Pro machine with 512MB of memory! Every time I tried I got a blue screen with "Dumping physical memory", despite following the installation procedures to the letter. When I finally managed to install the program, it blocked a large number of websites, including symantec's own! And yes, I allowed pretty much everything on the setup screen. I finally gave up after three days, wrote the investment off and downloaded Black Ice. Installed correctly the first time, has been running with no problems whatsoever and has caught 20+ hackers in the past 24 hours. I am sure my experience with Norton Firewall is down to my failing somehow but I do not have the time and the patience to "investigate".

Get Norton Firewall or Internet Security 2003 2002-10-16
This is a good product, but the 2003 line is better. Both of
these software packages contain an OUTSTANDING ad blocking
feature. After installation, I visited numerous sites which had
previously dumped loads of pop-up and pop-under ad windows and
flash-based ads on my screen, but now -- POOF -- no more trash,
with no discernable negative effects on web page loading. Plus
ad banners are effectively eliminated--so all you get is the web
page you want. After a week of intensive use, I have yet to find
a problem with this software. I find it difficult to praise
this product enough--it delivers every feature smoothly and
efficiently, as advertised. I have it installed on my computer
along with Norton Cleansweep--no conflicts or flaws noted.

Good, Very configurable, but slows down the system... 2002-09-14

Replace it 2002-09-03
The 2002 firewall creates problems with so many other types of software and internet applications that you may want to think about installing ZoneAlarm's wonderful product instead. I uninstalled Norton's 2002 firewall with great difficulty (call the company, get an uninstall key). I still use Norton for antivirus protection.

GIVE IT A PASS MARK 2002-08-29
Although there is a litany of drawbacks associated with "Norton Personal Firewall 2002", it is still worth having. The software will cater for your basic data defence. However, the sad truth is that any battle-tested cyber-intruder or hacking whiz kid will have enough water to douse this Firewall. Another fact is that unless your PC's processing speed is second only to the velocity of light, expect Firewall 2002 to slow down web-page loading.
But that said, my personal experience indicates that the pros of having this inexpensive protection still outweighs the cons.

Don't buy it if you're running Win 98 2002-08-02
After I installed this product on my Windows 98 system, my previously fleet computer began taking three to five minutes just to boot up. I accessed the Symantec support web site (they charge for individual support), and found that many other people are experiencing even worse problems with the software.

When I tried to uninstall the program, it was as though Hal had taken over my computer. Firewall refused to uninstall without an "access number" -- only "my supervisor" could make such changes. Unfortunately, I AM my supervisor. I finally was able to uninstall using a separate program on the Firewall CD that I knew of only after an hour of searching through support messages on the Symantec site. Even after uninstalling, my system is still extremely slow to boot up.

I do not recommend this product.

Good product but quirky set-up 2002-08-01
The firewall seems to be running good at the moment--after installing it 2 weeks ago. I had experienced several of the dreaded "BLUE SCREEN" error messages immediately after installing it, but after downloading the Symantec patches and updates, it works very well. The only time I get an error now is if I fire up my computer with the cable modem off line.
This product allows a great deal of customization although you can use the "recommended settings" for a quick and adequate setup. It also seems to work well with Norton Anti-Virus, if you are concerned about that interface.
