Not scientifically valid--won't renew 2007-05-02
Every once in a while, this magazine produces a truly great or fascinating article. Unfortunately, now that I have a subscription, I have realized that the bulk of the articles are very mundane, contain no references or studies, and sometimes purport to have conclusions which are drawn from nowhere. I agree with other reviewers that you could find most of these articles/tidbits in Cosmo or Glamour...

Moreover, I have noticed that psychology today has a free website that contains the majority of their past articles, so check that out before you waste money and paper on a hard copy subscrption.

Only read if you feel like you would welcome a discussion point. I am going to sign up for something a little more academic.

Entertaining and Informative 2007-04-18
It's entertaining but also informative. It's definitely NOT an academic journal but I think it appeals to the pseudo-psychologist in all of us.

My best friends (one with a degree in Psychology) and I are always discussing the interesting tid-bits we read. I think this magazine would appeal to people similar to us: brainy, inquisitive, open-minded and fed up with the other glossies marketed to brainless twenty something females.

We also enjoy Bust, Seed, and Discover.

These magazines are by far more substantial than most of the birdcage liner being marketed today. To be certain though, the objective is to entertain and enlighten but it's definitely aimed at the laymen.

I Like It 2006-07-05
The articles are fun & I've learned alot of useful information, like last month's article on depression - the fish oil & exercise worked almost immediately. It's not a professional or academic journal - if you're a general person on the street, you will learn a lot about psychology.

Not a Journal 2006-06-24
I would have to agree with the preivous comments that state that this magazine isn't worthy of its title. I subscribed before reading review, I was hoping to find an affordable psychology-based read, though some stories are interesting I'm sure I'd be able to find them in other magazines like Vogue or Cosmo. and there is plenty of ads, probably more than stories. And much like other reviewers When I first ordered it, it took forever for the first issue to arrive, now its more regular but my subscription will soon end with no renewal of course!

Fun, Valuable, Interresting but not an APA Journal 2006-05-12
If you are looking for the quality of an APA journal, this is not one. But if you love the field of psychology as I do, it's a fun and relevant periodical. Kind of a Enquirer of Psychology. I find it a fun read when I'm relaxing, but be careful of their interpretation of research. You know how that can go. It's also got a flavor of Maxim or Cosmo type topics. Sex, relationships, dating, what do men/women like as well as diet/nutrition. Overall recommended.

Mundane Psychology 2008-01-29
At first i was excited to find a magazine devoted to the interesting field of psychology, unfortunately, i ordered a subscription of Psychology Today, before i found Scientific American Mind.

Psychology Today is a pop-magazine with much emphasis on day-to-day selfconfidence struggles. Some of the information presented is worth reading, but it's just not worthy of bearing it's name in that it portrays psychology as something superficial, and as if it were an exercise in highschool conversation; discussing why one person is more popular than the other.

It's a mundane, practical how-to magazine without much depth.

A Great MAGAZINE (emphasis on Magazine) 2008-01-18
Ordering this magazine thinking that you'll end up with volumes of information that you would find in textbooks is going to leave you upset. This is a magazine and, as someone who has studied in the area of journalism, I understand completely why they produce the articles they do and why it upsets 'serious' psychologists. It's very much Pop Psychology. It's light, fun, and informative to anyone without degrees in the field. It's very much a self-help/improvement magazine and, like all such magazines, you must take every ounce of advice with a grain of salt. An article about introversion really helped me improve my self-image and understand why I live the way I do and how to maintain a healthy balance. It does cover the recent psychology 'gossip' but this coverage is no different than the coverage of new scientists and their untested hypotheses.

a magazine best suited for people who have not studied psychology 2008-01-10
Psychology Today is truly a magazine for persons who want some information about psychology without going to school and studying psychology. Therefore, there are going to be two mindsets about this magazine: The psychology students and professionals will think this too fluffy and stuffed with ads; and the everyday man on the street will say, "Wow! That was a pretty good article. I learned something."

My own experience is similar to the gentleman who purchased a three year subscription to Psychology Today and then wound up tossing it away more and more as his formal studies gave him an in depth education of psychology and how it is used. I loved this magazine when I was a teenager planning to work with people to help them solve their problems. However, these days as someone who has a master's in social work I would probably not get much out of the magazine.

The ads are certainly numerous and you get the feeling that Psychology Today wedges in just enough articles to keep subscribers interested while selling ad space to make big bucks. That's a shame.

Overall, this magazine is best suited for the everyday man on the street who has not studied psychology and who does not plan on studying psychology. These people will get a lot more out of their subscriptions to this magazine. I recommend this for the layman while students of psychology at the college or postgraduate level would do well to skip this one.

Three stars.

Not worth your time 2007-10-16
As an undergraduate student starting to learn about Psychology, I picked up this magazine expecting useful articles (as the title seemed to imply). I was intensely disappointed. Instead of articles, the magazine contains useless quizzes not even interesting enough to warrant a look.

If you want gossip, pick up People [6-month subscription] or Star Magazine or a thousand other different gossip magazines out there.

If you want real psych content, pick up a copy of Scientific American Mind instead.

On your way out you might be interested in Readers Digest - U.S. Edition, Newsweek or TIME [1-year subscription].

Great Magazine 2007-06-03
If you're looking for something deeper then go out and buy a text book. This is a MAGAZINE. It is meant to have many articles on many subjects, so it can't get too deeply into a single subject. It doesn't have the space. Honestly, I can't understand people who expect much depth from so few pages. Where is the logic??? Anyway, the magazine is great. If you're a naturally deep, intuitive type of person then you can use the interesting articles to make your own connections and go a lot deeper.
