Editorial Review
Anyone who's seen Jill Scott live knows she's the real deal--a down-home diva more concerned with working a melody or getting her groove on than Britney-fied glitz or Badu-style pride. So it's no surprise that the singer's warmth translates beautifully on Experience, a collection of 11 live tracks recorded at Washington D.C.'s Constitution Hall, plus 6 previously unreleased cuts. With the Headhunters-esque intro of "A Long Walk" that opens the double disc, Scott and her more-than-capable backing band, Fatback Taffy, establish a heartfelt rapport with the audience that comes through not only in their reinterpretations of the singer's tunes, but in the pauses in between. This is apparent throughout, like when Scott notices a pregnant woman in the crowd and says with a giggle, "I see that baby in that belly over there--what's that baby doing?" Or when the Philly native belts the bridge on "Love Rain," intoning the line "You broke me, but now I'm healing" in lush, redemptive timbres. As for the new studio tracks, Scott offers up a set of solid originals that should leave fans plenty satisfied till her new album drops. Tracks like "Gimme," a funk-heavy dance track, and the drum & bass-driven "Gotta Get Up," are about as infectious as they come, while "Be Ready" features Scott's voice at its most gorgeous, her rich alto punctuating the song's syncopations with grace and ease. --Sylvia W. Blazin' & Amazin' Jilly from Philly ... (UPDATE 6-17-08) 2008-04-05
I adore this woman! I swear when I first heard of her (from the "Collaborations" CD), I couldn't believe I what I've been missing. It has been about a good 20 years since I've heard vocals like Jill's. This CD ("Experience") is absolutely the best LIVE album of all time! No kidding. This woman moved me and I was not present at her show! I never heard of Jill Scott until last year (2007) when I got her "Collaborations" CD.

Jilly from Philly is a musical gem, one we've all longed for and now we have her.

Jill's vocal range is probably an 8, a rarity in the past 20 years. Sarah Vaughan's and Ella Fitzgerald's range were an 8. For Sass, perhaps 9! LOL Talk about fine singers. Jill Scott's name is up along with Sassy Sarah Lois Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald, First Lady of Song.

You go, Sister Jill. -- an avid fan 4ev'r. AB

UPDATED (6/17/08): For those who do not know, there is a brief silent period after the last track entitled "Free". I had my headphones on my ear listening for about 3 minutes of dead space on my MP3 player when I heard two additional tracks!!! It begins exactly 3:48 seconds after "Free" is finished. There is a revamped version of "Gotta Go to Work" and following this track is the lovely club-disco mix of "He Loves Me". Surprise...surprise!!
Note: I want a club-disco mix version of Free, He Loves Me, Sweet Justice, You Got me (especially this track) and more! Please...someone help...I gotta gotta gotta get the club remixes of some of Jill's finest works. : )

Perfection! 2008-01-22
Jill Scott is perfection!!! Everything about her is so organic. She is the ultimate at speaking to our minds hearts and inner most being. Deep only touches the surface when describing her. I just love this album. Studio albums are great but with a live album you can just feel the music. You can feel her feeling her lyrics. I love it! Nobody like her

Music to chill and sip wine 2007-11-15
Jill Scott's Live CD is great, there are so many sounds of different instruments and singing. The CD is very Mellow and you could relax, take a bath, chill and sip some wine with the one you love or simply just by yourself. I would recommend this to anyone!!!

Best Kept Secret 2007-06-14
This album is a lovely extension of Ms. Scott. This one of the best albums I've heard in a while. Each listener will walkaway with remnants of her soul. Those who comment about the lyrics being explicit or suggstive need to really get a grip on human sexuality. There is nothing tame or angelesque about it. But, her lyrics are insightful, tasteful and creative. But I guess everyone has their level of tolerance. For instance, obsessive cussing is a no for me. Anyways, album is great and a lot of the songs would be good for lyrical/contemporary dance pieces. I'm working on a piece.

Bad Lady... 2007-03-29
I got a chance to see this concert for myself and everytime I listen to it, I feel like I am back in the amphitheatre. I wouldn't trade this cd for anything. She is on fire! Definitely a good investment for your listening pleasure.

Wow! That's all I can say. This is by far the best live album I have ever pruchased. The performances of each song take them to a whole new level. The live band is terrific and so are the backup vocalists, which includes Vivian Green. But Jill Scott is just amazing. The songs have movements. They have groove sessions, improv, re-done melodies of songs from her debut. (And not to mention the hilarious commentary by Jill on people's first reactions of "Gettin' In The Way"). I really don't know what else to say about the live album other than... it's really amazing. You can just sit down, listen and be enteratined. Or play it while you're cleaning the house or doing work. It is really beautiful. (Keep in mind that some of the songs go up to 12 minutes, so it may not be for every listener).

Now let's talk aboout the + EP. Now... I bought this album, and I wouldn't have minded paying full price even without anything else to go with the amazing live album. But the fact that she included this is fantastic. This EP is wonderful. I see why she didn't release these songs on an album by themselves. It's very different from Jill's regular work. Different may not be the word. But the songs on this EP seem a little more hip hop...& opera influenced, and they are much more intimate than any of her past or present work. It feels like she's talking to you, really. I enjoyed all of the songs just as much as the live part. So she's not just tagging this little album on just to trick you... this is really great stuff. On "Gotta Get Up," Jill expresses how she has grown tired of the daily grind, and would rather stay home and play video games than go to her nine-to-five. (Amen!) Jill uses her high, and I mean high, register on the old school groove of "Gimme." She warns with syncopated raps and beatiful opera that when you come to her, you better "Be Ready." Common stops by on the laid-back "Highpost Brotha." The is also a hidden remix of "He Loves Me."

So... in conclusion, this is a superb live album with a wonderful EP attached to it. I highly recommend that you buy this. No, wait... I demand it. Plus, Amazon is selling it at a wonderful price. (It half of waht I bought it for.) Please take advantage of that offer because this is something that you don't want to be missing out on. (I really wish that they could have released a DVD of this, but I guess they probably didn't want to over-expose Jill because she had only had one album prior to this.)

"Experience" is the perfect name for this cd. It truly was an experience. I have been writing poetry for a few years now, but most people thought that it was too "real". So I kind of backed away from it. But after hearing "Thickness" I changed my mind. I was inspired to once again write about real situations. "He loves me" has to be my favorite track. Her voice is absolutely amazing. When I'm listening to it I feel like I've been taken to another place. I sing also and I thought I was pretty good until I heard this song. She shut me up. Her voice is powerful and erotic. It's hard to find a vocal role model with the singers that we have today. But I have found one in Jill. I could go on and on, but I won't. I'll just say that this cd has inspired me to be true to myself and to my music.
