Silver Screen Functionality and Eye Candy for your Palm Pilot
2005-07-13
I have never been one to download "skins" to make my MP3 player look cooler. So it was surprising to me that I paid $19.99 for a skin like program from my Palm Pilot Tungsten E.
To be fair, skins are the very least of what Silver Screen has to offer, but you can download dozens of free ones or pay $5 and download additional commercial ones. Since I don't care about skins and use the default I will not be able to comment much on this subject.
Why upgrade to Silver Screen
1) Ticker
The ticker is programmable to display on you file pages two items
To do List and Date book (two lines that act as a reminder of what you have planed for today.
You can have it turn on in the morning and see you day scroll past you.
2) Improved Categories
Instead of a pull down menu to go from MAIN to SYSTEM, silver screen has big Amazon.com style TABS at the bottom of the page. Very nice
Also if you have an icon in the wrong category you can DRAG it to another tab (very very nice) All Palm users know what a pain the CATEGORY application on Palm is.
3) Recent Apps tab
We all use the same couple of programs the most so a recent apps is a useful feature, and its right there for you.
4) Battery management.
Each skin has a different icon for the battery but they all let you tap them to charge the information you get. Battery icon is default followed by percentage followed by volts (I am currently at 3.9 V) followed by % of RAM left and then actual ram used.
Then going back to default Battery icon.
5) TOOLS
Remember how you could drag files into new categories? Well you can also drag files in to the recycle bin.
Or you can drag files to BEAM. No more going to send and searching for you program just drag and drop to the BEAM tool on the TOOL page and you are set.
6) another useful feature (not for me but for my brother) is the ability to key lock. He has the only Palm Pilot that didn't have Key Lock built into it, this software has a key lock feature, it also lets you soft-reset, power off
While I would never pay $19.95 for a nice graphical interface, I have to admit I enjoy the nicer graphical interface, but it is the tools that make my palm pilot more functional and user to use that makes this program worth the price of installation.
But don't worry like all good software you don't have to take my word for it, download it for free and take it for a 30 test drive, or better yet, have a friend beam it to you.

Enjoying the launcher and have tried many. Looks great and has very cool integration with some other products. Have had no problems with XP installation or Treo 300 installation.
Got Win98? ...hope so

Silver Screen seems like a neat product. It says NT compatible which made me think that I could use it on my Handspring Treo and my Windows 2000 PC. Unfortunately, the Silver Screen application will not install on to my handheld because, as their tech support told me, I'm not using Windows 98.
