Good luck trying to order

I wish I could give an honest review of this lathe, but I have been unable to order one. I have tried to order on two different sites and have been told that they are no longer available. Still trying to get credit to my account. Buyer beware!

I WAS just a little bit hesitant to buy this lathe because the reviews were not all positive. I am really glad I did, though, because it is a very good piece of equipment. It was easy to set up, runs quietly, hardly any vibration, and I am thoroughly satisfied. Buy it, you will like it.

switch breaks!

My father bought this lathe and within weeks the switch broke and he had to wait months for a replacement switch, and then a few months later, the switch broke again, and he is having to wait months for a replacment switch. I am going to look into returning it and getting a different model.

I am very pleased with the Delta 46-715 lathe. I've been using it for a month now, and when I say using it I mean it. It has been running trouble free for at least four hours every day for the past month. I started to not choose this lathe due to a hand full of negative reviews here but am very glad that I decided to purchase it. I couldn't imagine that Delta made a problematic product like described in reviews below so I checked with Wood magazine. After downloading their comparison test of six lathes priced under $1000 I discovered that the Delta 46-715 came in second over all and was their choice for best-buy. You have to take negative reviews with a grain of salt. Many can be attributed to malcontents...people that just don't like anything. Not saying that's the case here, unfortunately some flawed products get past quality control. But please don't let one or two bad apples spoil the whole barrel. Read reviews on other sites as well before you make the mistake of passing on a fantastic product like the Delta 46-715

Mine operates well, with minimum vibration, and everything works as well as it should. The bed is quite heavy, and it assembled easily, as all holes lined up perfectly. I had no problem assembling it by myself. You only need to purchase a spanner to hold the headstock for faceplate removal. My little projects don't slow this powerful tool any.

It includes a speed range of 450 to 600 RPM. The cast-iron design of the lathe reduces vibrations for greater accuracy. Head stock rotates at 45- , 90- , and 180-degree angles anywhere along the bed for bowl or general outboard turning. The pulley includes a 24-position index scale that allows you to indulge in intricate, ornamental detailing, while the spindle comes with 24 lockable positions, great for making precise calculations and cuts. I received the lathe on time but only had two legs for the stand. There were several communications with Amazon both written and verbal. I am a workworker beginner and have used the lathe on several training project and it seems to working fine.

Nice lathe for the price

I've had this lathe about 9 months and have turned both bowls and spindles with it. It has a minor vibration at mid-speed which doesn't seem to affect the turning. I'm sure it is coming from the reeves pulleys and I am trying to get that remedied with Delta. Amazon ran it on sale for $399 and it came with Delta's good 6 piece lathe chisel set as a bonus. Was delivered in good shape and in a timely matter. Seems to have plenty of power and it is fairly well put together. I had a cheap off-brand lathe before and am glad I made this upgrade for the small investment. I've seen alot of bad reviews on this lathe but think that for the average woodturner who does it simply for a hobby this is a fairly decent lathe for the price.

Superb Midsize Lathe

This machine is well-designed and well-built. Massive (except for the stand, which is adequate) and smooth running. Tool rest, head- and tail-stock lock easily, fast and rock solid. The tool is entirely of cast iron and steel (exception: on off switch is plastic, and entirely adequate). Motor is powerful. Alignment of head and tailstock is accurate. Tool inspires confidence as you turn. As for the several very negative reviews, these folks probably have the early model (type 1) and happy to say all those bugs are worked out. Important to note that this $500 lathe is not a $1200 lathe--that is, it is not designed for turning really large heavy objects really slowly. In the midsize category it probably can't be beat. Really nice features include an indexing pin for decorative work, a handwheel, great controls and locks, a motor that counterbalances the work for outboard turning, and a heavy tool rest extension that makes outboard work larger than 14" realistic. The light stand can be beefed up with sandbags, or built on for storage beneath which also adds mass.

Stepping up

I upgraded from a midsize lathe to this one and could not be happier it has done everything ask of it and more, this lathe is well built,solid, and has a lot higher degree of precision than what i was used to and it shows in the quality of work comeing off of it.
