Okay-ish FPS but fails because it isn't Unreal 2008-10-28
In 1998 Tim Sweeney changed the face of FPS gaming forever. Unreal was released and became a major gaming hit that revolutionized fps, along with practically reinventing the game engine (the unreal engine is a very important core gaming tool behind many modern fps today). That concept was a reality thanks to Tim Sweeney spending 3 years in his garage. At the time this was the reason to buy a graphics cards like a Voodoo or a TNT and run it on your Windows 95 system.
Unreal was a deep game, lots of levels, lots of running around, lots of shooting, mindless blasting, pressing levers, going through levels that have some maze qualities, running across the same bad guys with some variations, the textures, AI and level design surprisingly still able to deliver on a satisfactory game play today. Unreal beats a lot of fps games that have since been released. It is an all-time great for those of us gamers out there who remember the end of the 90s and remember what it was like to play fps games that people would line up around the block to buy.

Unreal was not followed up directly by Unreal 2. In fact Unreal become a multiplayer called Unreal Tournament that was released in 1999. The next update was Unreal Tournament 2003.

Unreal 2 was released in 2004. It pretty much tanked for a couple of reasons. The first was that it was not a sequel to the original Unreal (that ended in a cliff hanger). Unreal 2 is a new story about a marine that travels from planet to planet picking up alien artefacts while blasting aliens. Unreal 2 has some great looking environments. There is a game here and if you have played the best FPS has to offer then Unreal 2 is worth checking out. However it is nothing like Unreal and that is a major drawback. Also it is 10 times slower than the original Unreal as your marine walks at a snail's pace about in a clunky suit. The missions are very leisurely, linear and extremely easy to beat. The game isn't a challenge but at the same time the environments are very well rendered but the story isn't very good. I found myself finishing it though because there are only so many FPS games out there.

So if you are looking for an FPS you haven't played then I would suggest replaying the original Unreal and then if you feel you must then go for this (it is usually available in Unreal box sets). All in all this game was a cut below par but did look good at times and there is a nice array of weapons to use but the spirit of Unreal is departed and what is left is something that doesn't deserve the name it has.

Pros:
Environments
Range of guns

Cons:
It is not Unreal
It is very slow
Story is not good

My reveiw of unreal 2 2008-04-25
Unreal 2 is a great improvement is some ways from the first one and some loses.First,Unreal 2 has a strange story line where you are supposed to find artifacts for someone(i forgot his name) but the places are to easy to beat.
The bosses are not really hard to beat with some weapons but they look hard.
I mean sure you might jump back one or two times but it isnt really scary.
The last level was way to easy to beat. Also some people might try to sell Unreal for more than what you can but it from on steam(i will show you a link to download steam, a program that can buy games).I looked the sellers and target sells Unreal 2 for $40.00 when it is only on steam for $10.00.
The reason i gave it four stars was because the game was a need to get kind of game for a person like me since i am a fan of Unreal games.

Enjoy :)

data3.cab corruption on disc 2 2008-02-12
I wish I could say how great this game is but I can't even install it. There are 2 discs for installation. The first disc will install without a hitch. The second disc, however, has a corrupt file on it (data3.cab) and cannot be read/copied no matter what you try. Thus, the installation will fail every time. Buyer beware about this one... not worth the headache.

Okay. 2007-12-29
It is pretty to look at, but falls flat when compared to the first game in the series.

Huh... that was intresting... 2007-05-12
After all the Multi-player versions that came out, Unreal universe is exspanded again in a new single player Adventure. This time with voice acting and facial Posing. NEAT...

Still the game even on it Hardest Settig was way to easy for me in the first run through. and was way too short for my taist. then again it was still long.

The weapons where balanced fairly well, lots of nice features. had a fairly intresting story and an intresting Slant.

Still it dissapointed me. fun but nothing really new...

Not exactly "Unreal" but... 2007-02-19
I never liked those online tournament style games, I prefer something with a bit of a story. This one's got it all. If you found the first Unreal pretty but a bit boring, then you're in for a pleasant surprise. This one is much prettier, and has an actual story!

Very short game. 2006-11-03
It should never have been called unreal period. It is a decent "first person" shooter game, but was very short. If I would have paid $40.00 I'd have been very disapointed. It only took 8 - 10 hrs to beat and I'm not a pro gamer!

Good AI and interesting missions 2006-04-23
I like this game. While it's true that it has nothing to do with Unreal I'm sure misnaming it was a Marketing management decision. They lied to increase sales. As such I believe if you take Unreal II The Awakening for a sci-fi fps game on its own merits you'll enjoy it.

The opponents are credible and unpredictable. The missions were interesting to me. Not just shoot, shoot & shoot. They required a little strategy and planning. Sometimes you had to place men and weapons to repel attacks or provide sniper cover to a soldier on his own mission.

The storyline could have been expanded but still the characters had distinct, fresh personalities and were not just cardboard cutouts.

An unusual ending too. Not what I expected. Don't expect 'happily ever after'. I played this game over about a week in the evenings and it was something I looked forward too.

If you want a game you can get into that provides a challenge without being impossible to the point of frustration you'll like this one.

Meh... Coulda been done a lot better. A LOT better... 2006-01-15
Game had interesting weapons and amazing graphics... but I just don't understand why the game creators didn't stick with the original Unreal storyline. Unreal2 had nothing to do with the first Unreal (which is an awesome game, btw).

XMP can be a fun multiplayer... but there are hardly any working servers!

Now that this game is cheap, though, I'd buy it just for fun.
