Editorial Review
The Canon S9000 is the wide-format photo printer you've been waiting for - precision equipment for your desktop that enables you to print truly remarkable photos that rival those from a professional lab. All at incredible speeds and with the ability to retain their brilliance and vibrancy for approximately 25 years when printed on Canon Photo Paper Pro. The S9000 Photo Printer from Canon features out-of-the-box performance for professional photographers and photo enthusiasts that makes photo printing incredibly fast and easy. The S9000 Photo Printer features a sophisticated printhead with 3, 072 nozzles for faster printing and much greater detail. Advanced MicroFine Droplet Technology combines cutting-edge achievements in ink-droplet size, accurate ink application, consistent droplet quality and ink composition. The result is spectacular 2400 x 1200 dpi print resolution, 49 gradation levels, reduced graininess and breathtaking detail and color reproduction. Plus, Canon gives you the ability to print borderless 10 x 15 cm and 22 x 28 cm photos, just like a photo lab. The S9000 Photo Printer features the Canon Think Tank System. Six individual ink tanks, one for each color, make it easy to replace just the color that runs out, rather than the entire cartridge. Plus, a unique optical low-ink sensor warns you with an on-screen message when an ink tank is low, giving you plenty of time to replace the tank before it runs out.

Never leave home to develop pictures again 2004-03-12
I bought this printer from a reputable camera store in my town and used it once in the first two weeks. I only had Kodak printer paper and the results were bad. I had convinced myself the printer was going back and I decided to try Canon paper as a last ditch effort and I am so glad I did.
The pictures are amazing with Canon paper and its no more expensive then any other brand. With the initial cartidges I was able to print ten 13" x 19" photos, over ten 8 1/2" x 11" and numerous 4" x 6". I have only replaced two of the six cartridges.
I have a Canon 10D camera (6 megapixel) and the quality is stunning. I test printed 2 megapixel images at 13" x 19" and although pixelation was noticeable, the quality was still excellent. The color matching also was near perfect from what you see on the screen. The Easy Photo Print software that comes with makes it extremely easy and quick to create wallets, 5"x7"'s, 4"x6"s, 5"x5",8"x10", and true borderless prints and putting as many possible on the same page so not to waste paper.
I just got some Classic Pearl paper from Ilford (get from a camera store) and you can truly have professional prints at home. I have numerous photos of my daughter at work and have had colleagues ask where i got them printed and when i tell them at home with the S9000 they are truly amazed.

Wow - now I got my own photo lab 2004-01-24
Let me start with the strength of this dazzling product:
FAST - SILENT - and most importantly BEAUTIFUL picture quality.
There are some more professional reviews out there for this product (http://www.steves-digicams.com/printers.html) so I don't wanna cover every aspect - just what came to my attention and hasn't been covered there.
First this thing about borderless printing. The follow up product is the S9100 where you pay 200 more for more options on borderless printing for certain paper formats. The higher resolution of 4,800 by 1,200 compared to 2,400 x 1,200 dpi for this model gives you theoretically an advantage. Everybody who compared them said that the differences are minute and only noticable with a lense. Now with the S9000 you can print borderless the following papers: A4, A3, Letter(8.5x11) and 4x6. Every other format up to 13x19 appears with border. You only get to those formats in the software if you uncheck the "borderless printing" box.
About the paper to use with this printer I can only talk about what I tried personally. The Paper Pro seems to be the best. Equally good the Ilford smooth gloss (way cheaper and comes in larger amounts of papers- up to 200 sheets per box). The Canon Matte didn't convince at all. Maybe they work if you transform your pictures with digital darkroom software to an artifical painting, other than that: don't use it.
Finally the tint. The seperated cartridge system (6 different colors) saves you quite some money here. The poto magenta and the photo cyan seem to be the most needed. Check around for best prices (www.asap-inkjet-cartridges).
I did some math and came out way cheaper on my printer than in the local photolab. Particularly with large sized pictures you end up saving a lot of money. Another important aspect is that you can be way more creative with your own printer than the lab can be. What dissapointed me the most with a professional lab was that the computer software would cut away a considerable part of the picture. Now with your own printing software you can control the actual outcome way better.
So get this product and have fun!!!

The best Printer all around. For $200 it is bargain! 2004-01-06
The new i9100 is different by the plastic cover construction and price tag around $... All the same, the printing heads, the resolution and the size. 4800 dpi for i9100 is just another marketing trick. Trough the printing quality is very good, quiet and speedy. No problem at all. Use the right paper and right inks and it will do the right job for you. By far the most trouble-less photo printer I have experienced. With Os X works perfectly (as well as just everything with Apple!)

Paper will not feed 2003-12-22
I have always purchased high end Epson printers whenever a new printer came out. I was in a photo shop and saw a demo on the S9000 and bought one. It worked fine(with Canon Paper Pro only)until out of warranty. The paper feed now is is poor, destroying more paper than it prints, printing half photos when it does feed. Can't get any help from customer service. Ink is expensive and not easy to find. Have to stock up when it is available, or order over the Internet. Satisfied with print quality, but going back to Epson. All my camera gear is pro Canon and is superior, but high end Epson printers I think are a cut above in the printing arena.

Terrific with Photoshop right out of the box 2003-12-22
I've only had the printer a few weeks, but printed 100 2-sided 8-1/2 x 11 Christmas cards and about a dozen 8-1/2 by 11 high res photos on the pro paper. I use Photoshop software for all my photo manipulation so I can't comment on the software included with the printer. If you're using Photoshop and set up the monitor properly (as photoshop directs) the output will match what you see unbelievably.

I just got rid of my Epson 1520...what a piece of trash that was. Always clogging up! I've used friends Epson 1280 and I think that the Canon S9000 is appreciably better. This Canon is an unbeatable deal at $200. And for the amount of printing I've done, the only cartridge I replaced so far was the yellow, and the magenta is now signaling as "low". I also printed to the canon matte finish paper...also very good, but more contrasty than the Pro paper.

I know they now have the new i9100 but for the money, this is the one to get. I have friends that have the i9100 but "to the eye", on the pro paper, I can't tell the difference.

Fatally flawed - do not buy. 2008-01-13
The waste ink tank fills up really quickly and is all but impossible to replace. Why???

Problems with colour 2006-05-06
I have found the 9100 to be a fine printer for the digital photographer enthusiast and especially useful for turning our posters for a local theatre group.
However, I tried to economise by buying cheaper inks and now find that my prints are never of the correct hue. They are all tending towards the blue end of the spectrum.
I am wondering if returning to Canon inks will solve this problem or if my printer is past its sell by date. I've had it for two years and fancy a 6600d but I wonder if I should consider looking at Epson???

Canon S9000 Printer review. 2005-11-29
The canon S9000 printer is a good printer for colour work provided the results are not for permanent storage. Fading is evident after a few months. Some banding and missing lnes appear on standard printing mode. The choice of paper and ink is crucial to consistency. I could not obtain sellable prints with it. The printer can stop printing halfway and spit out an unfinished job. The lack of error codes in the software or an LCD on the printer makes it frustrating when the error light blinks and the printer refuses to print. The cleaning eventually fills the cleaning sponge that needs to be sent to Canon for replacement (not cheap). The Canon S9000 does not support textured papers or CD/DVD direct printing, but this is now an old printer for this feature. The plus of this printer is the speed. Printing photographs or text documents is lighting fast and very good. Recommended for quick proofing of photos (provided the right profile is used) and for text with graphics.
Printing up to A3 is a bonus for printing small posters and drawings. The monochrome quality of photographs is not satisfactory.

Bad Support 2005-08-31
I bought one of these units almost two years ago. It prints good looking pictures. It is very convenient to replace only one emply color. etc.

I would strongly suggest not buying this unit. Because it is not one of Canon's most popular availabilty of software drivers for future operating systems might not be developed.

According to Devin the Canon Technical Support Representative "There are no known plans to devise a driver for x64 with this unit. I am sorry for any trouble caused by this."

What trouble not being able to use it with my computer any more, that's not "trouble" that is an utter lack of Canon's comitment to thier customers. Beware of Canon, once they sell you a product they don't care anymore.

READ Before you get a Canon S9000! 2005-03-27
That Canon would make a printer requiring the user to return the entire machine to be taken into an authorized service shop is astonishing.

Eventually EVERY owner will see their S9000 warn them about the ink overflow pad at the bottom of the printer, and soon the printer will stop functioning. You will have no choice but to spend about half the cost of the printer to have the printer torn down, the pad replaced and the printer reset, unless you can do it yourself and void the warranty.

Other problems with the S9000 include a tempermental print head, which requires regular cleaning (and ink waste).

On our S9000 the paper alignment bar is extremely sticky, worse than any bottom-of-the-line printer we've operated.

The paper handling is pretty bad, and the S9000 will occasionally pull in paper at an angle even though it has fed straight.

After a year-and-a-half, our S9000 is about dead except for B&W printing.
