No Upgrade 2004-07-07
I was pleased with its performance until I realized that Toshiba doesn't offer the upgrade to Pocket PC 2003. Seems like just a ploy for me to sell it and buy the 755, which is the same machine. Needless to say I'm not happy with Toshiba's support of this product.

So-so, but mine still works! 2004-06-13
I bought this shortly after the recall (November 2002). It's been over a year and a half, and I still use mine daily! I've only had the 1% battery problem once because I usually sit mine to recharge overnight. Is it a hassle? Not if I need to update information on it daily (e-mails, appointments, etc).

All in all, it's been frustrating to see poor reviews and then see Toshiba not support the e740 any more. However, with proper management, you can get a WiFi enabled PDA with SD/CF slots for cheap and be pretty satisfied with yourself!

Get it if you can find it for a good price. 2004-05-21
I brought the E740 1 month ago for a very good price. If you are looking for a wi-fi enabled PDA, but don't want to spend too much on it, take a look at the E740. I read most of the reviews on Amazon and other opinions site, most people have negative opinions on the E740. Their opinions are understandable, since they got it for a very high price, and the performance does not match its price tag. After I using it for over a month, here are some of the pros and cons in my opinion on the E740.

Pros:
Wi-Fi!!! You can't find a PDA with integrated Wi-Fi in this price range.

CF(compatible with both type I/II) and SD slot. It really offers you a lot of upgrade options with both the CF and SD slot. I personally use a 512 SD card and leave the CF slot for a 56K cf modem.

User replaceable battery

Cons:
Windows Mobile 2002, and Toshiba does not offer upgrade to the WM2003. THis is a big deal, since Microsoft change the database for WM2003, which means new programs will not be compatible with WM2002. Also, Windows 2003 is written to take advantage of the XScale processor in the E740, which supposingly will boost up system performance and increase battery life.

It crashes, but in my opinion is is acceptable. It doens't crash all the time, but occasionally.

THis is pretty much it. In term of battery life, I think most other Windows based PDA offer identical battery life. (Well, except some big PDAs like Dell X5, it offer better life, but it's very bulky) I think the PDA deserve anywhere from 50%-60%, since it does offer a lot of features, and at a relatively low price. So if you can find a E740 for a reasonable price, it will be a great gaget to have.

Be afraid 2004-05-21
As one of the first ones to buy a Toshiba e740, I have had nothing but troubles since the day I bought it. I paid close to $500 for it back then.
My advice to anyone considering a Toshiba Pocket PC is check the forums and customer feedback. It's all bad. Anyone want to buy a $500 paperweight?

Its not secure if you dont store info on real pc 2004-04-27
My Pocket has been reseted 4 times already, I have only used it 4 weeks in the 3 months that I have it, it is really disapointing losing your information. With this gadget you have to be lucky first, and be on top of charging it all the time. To me it simply sucks.

Piece of Junk!!! Don't buy 2008-01-04
I have a really cool paperweight for anybody that wants it. It sort of looks like a PDA, but isn't.

Seriously though, I had my E740 for a little less than a year when it started doing hard-reboots like others have complained about. I contacted Toshiba and they had me send it in. They sent me a new battery when they supposedly "fixed" it.

Shortly after the warranty expired, the PDA became totally unreliable and eventually stopped working altogether. That was over 4 years ago.

Since then, I have been using a Dell Axim X30. It's like night and day. I have never lost any information with it. It's too bad Dell got out of the PDA business.

What a peice . . . 2006-08-26
I have tried everything that I can think of to make this $500+ PDA work for me. It has been back to Toshiba twice. I puchased the PA3197U 1BRL "high capacity battery pack." It is still the single worst electronics purchase of my life.
The main problem is that the e740 will dump ALL my data at a whim. It randomly resets and looses all my data.
If you have any use for a PDA that will require that you COMPLETELY set it up and re-sync it in order to recover your data, Toshiba has a PDA for you !
If you are looking for a company that will answer your customer service needs by selling you additional, over-priced accessories that will in NO way resolve your problems, consider giving your business to Toshiba.

Stay Away from this PDA 2005-06-29
Despite early fixes from Toshiba, this PDA still has frequent problems with hard resets (you lose everything), loose batteries (you lose everything), and no support (cannot be upgraded). I am junking mine and moving to any vendor that shows they support their products (unlike Toshiba).

Excellent PDA 2005-02-27
I don't know why this pda has such a bad review, I recently purchased one and its been great! I haven't had one problem with it. And for the people that are complaining about the record button, it can be disabled!

E 740 problems 2004-07-20
This is a a great PDA execpt for one thing. It is has NO built-in memory to save stored data. The E 750 took care of this problem and Toshiba essentially stifed the owner of the orignal -including my letter to them which was written before one year warrantee. They never even answered my letter.

Their answer was to give you a $40 credit towards their old defective E740. Good customer relations - Toshiba
