Great Bandsaw
2007-03-10
I have had this bandsaw for about 3 weeks and I wonder how I got along without a bandsaw. It is easy to set up (although it does take two people). The alignment is straightforward but does take a while to get it right. I would recommend the 6 inch riser kit and the band saw fence as necessary accessories.
Great Woodworkers Toy!

This is one great unit for the money, and was extremely fast and easy to assemble right out of the cartons. One feature that was noticed as soon as I turned it on was the limited vibration. The only concern I have is the use of graphite guide blocks. The bandsaw I owned before purchasing the Jet used roller guides, which worked pretty well. Time will tell, but if needed, I can always change them out.

I didn't get this from Amazon, only because I was a recipient of a gift card for a local woodworking chain here in Houston. I don't think Amazon will mind me adding my 2 cents, though! When I was looking to purchase a bandsaw, I was originally looking for a Delta. After reading the reviews of Delta's, and this one, I opted for the Jet. Both are similar, and offer a 6" riser block, I think the one piece cabinet was superior, and was instrumental in my purchasing this, instead of the Delta. I've purchased a riser block, and a larger aftermarket table, and now this bandsaw is just AWESOME!!! I 've even attempted resawing, with no problems!! I probably would've been happy with the Delta, but I'm glad I got a Jet. Matthew Shenker has done a very thorough review on this bandsaw, take a look, and join us in owning a great bandsaw!!!
I finally can review the item...

I finally got the saw. It was pretty easy to set up. I have made a set of shelves with decorative ends. It went smoothly. I would agree with one of the other reviewers, buy new blades. The initial blade went pretty quick using maple for the shelves. I would rate four stars for the saw. No other major complaints.
I ordered this item on Sept 26, 2006. The item alledgedly was to ship within "one or two" business days. I have only experienced delays from Amazon. I wonder if this was discontinued and now Amazon will just cancel the order. With the number of similarly priced items purchased over the past three or four years (not including items purchased by my wife), you would think that Amazon would "belly up to the bar" and make good instead of just cancelling the item.
needs a lil more power

Don't get me wrong, this is a great saw for the $$$. I ordered this with the 6" rise for re-saw, the jet fence (good fence) and mobile base (required in my garage) + I added the after market roller bearing guides.
Needless to say it has lived up to Jets reputation, blade changes are ez and the saw works well under most circumstances. BUT if you are ripping 10-12" hard woods, (or anything wet), it could sure use a stronger moter
Dust collection usless

I bought this bandsaw through Woodcraft. At the time it was $549.99 with free shipping, $50.00 rebate AND free miter gauge and fence. A great deal I figured.
This saw has quickly become one of my shops most valued tool. It performs flawlessly and it's a pleasure to use. Most of my sawing is for resawing Cherry 5/4 into veneer. I want to stretch the cherry wood I had milled four years ago from trees that were cut on my property. It does the job perfectly for that.
I only have two beefs with Jet. One, is the 4 inch dust collection outlets is absolutely useless. It's on the side above where dust wants to settle therefore most of my dust is either on top of the cast iron bed or slips through the bottom where the door opens to alloy you to change blades. It's either that or my Jet dust collector is crap. The latter is not the case because that works great for my other tools in removing dust and chips in my shop.
The other complaint is the jet blade that comes with the saw. Junk, junk, junk. Throw it away before you make your first cut. I ordered and installed an Olson blade and man, what a huge difference and they are inexpensive too. I can't imagine what an expensive blade would do.
Anyway, if you're thinking of buying it just do it. Your gonna love it.
still working strong

I have had the Jet bandsaw for over a year. I have used to resaw 2x4 pine boards to build a fence. It has done well to resaw hardwoods such a oak and birch. It has all the power needed to resaw a 6" oak board. I also make boxes which I cut curves in a 6" thick piece of hardwood with no problems. I would recommend spending the extra money to get the 1 hp motor instead of the 3/4 hp. The guides adjust quickly and the blade tracks well. The only problem I have had is the blade tensioner broke after approximately 6 months. Jet quickly sent a new part and it was easy to replace. I have been very happy with this product and I use it all the time.
Look Elsewhere, This thing is no good

I bought this saw three years ago and have had nothing but problems since.
I also have a Jet tablesaw -- which I love -- that led to me purchasing this bandsaw.
For the money, this saw should come better built, better-equipped, and/or better-priced.
It lacks decent blade bearings -- so add to purchase price $100+ for Carter bearings. Also add the extension pack for resawing -- another $50-$100, plus blades.
It lacks a blade de-tensioner, add another $150.
It does not come balanced and will shake like crazy, so add your time to balance the wheels.
The dust extraction is a joke and it has nothing to clean the dust off the bottom wheel as it is working -- add your time to resolve that.
The hardware that they use to get the blade tensioner is third-rate and I am replacing it for the third time.
All-in-all, I wish I had bought the Laguna -- my buddy has one for less than I sank into this machine and his is reliable.
The only positive note I have to add, is that when it is running nicely, after much tuning, it does work well -- but that doesn't seem to last too long a time.
Good luck,
Erik.

This is my fourth band saw. And it the best one so far. Needless to say that I use it a lot. I did add the 6" riser kit and am happy with the way that worked out. The blade is still very solid and has that really nice sound of a good band saw. You know the sound when you hear it. I have only one thing that I wish it had on it. That would be a blade brush. The wheels seem to pick up junk that will get them out of balance. Other than that I am very happy with this tool and I would do it again if I need another one some time.

Jet is knocked out by Rikon
2007-04-02
Band saw is very important for some woodworking styles. Thus, I do rip on band saw a lot, since it is much safer than table saw for small pieces. I also like curves which are not composed from circles. I make tenon and dovetails on band saw.
So, I have got this saw (not from Amazon), sold it, and bought Rikon 14" deluxe version.
Let's compare
1. Rikon can resaw 12", no riser block kit needed.
2. Rikon has 20x16" table, no aftermarket table needed.
3. Rikon has much more advanced guides.
4. Rikon has 1-1/2" HP motor
5. Rikon does not vibrate at all
6. Most important point, Rikon can properly tension 3/4" carbide blades
7. Finally, Rikon has absolutely terrific customary service (have not seen better).
Rikon is $750, Jet band saw plus all after market items to match only some specification of Rikon is >$900. So, Rikon 14" saw will knock out Jet band saw in a minute. Delta band saw in a second.
