Not To be Missed, For One Night Only.....
2008-07-03
Paul Thorn's America of faith healers and tent revivals is there between the Wal-Marts, strip malls and McDonalds that seem to be everywhere in this country. Its a beautiful and ugly place, it's strengths are the stories of people who we don't often hear about (Sister Ruby, for example, is a real person, I don't know about the Mission Temple Fireworks Stand, but I hope it's real too) and a joyous rocking sound, which we need to hear more of.
From the UK,America often gives the impression that it really is nothing more than one big McDonald's. Paul Thorn is evidence of another America, more different, beautiful and humane. Kind of like Brendan Croker (go look him up).
love it!

Ain't Nothing Like A Fireworks stand revival in the South!

I have just recently discovered Paul Thorn's music. On this cd he truly captures how it feels to be in and from the south. You can feel the humidity and hear the crickets, smell the sweat at an old time camp meeting, but this album is not about religon it is about truth and determination. There is not a bad cut on this album, from Everyone Looks Good At The Starting Line to I'm A Lucky Man. The song Mission Temple Fireworks Stand, makes you want to believe even if you are determined not to. I like Paul Thorn was a boxer and no matter how good you are at some point truth will win out over determination.

I've been a huge fan of Paul Thorn for about 6 years. Bought this cd as a gift for someone who had heard one of his songs and asked me to recommend one of his albums. Just great songwriting. A true artist and storyteller, and a great band to see live!

Paul Thorn is amazing, he tells great stories with his songs. I recently had the pleasure of hearing him live and now I already own three of his CD's.
You must hear his work! He is a must for any collection, no matter what type of music you listen to.

I first heard Paul a year ago and was hooked. This one is by far my favorite album, but all his music is awesome! Can't ever get tired of hearing him. His kinda bluesy rock sound is uplifting to me. Definately motivating on a gloomy day. I subject all my co-workers to a daily dose. LOL! I recently saw him live. Had played his cd's all day before I went to the show. Man it just made it better! He and his crew are a great performers all the way around (on the cd and on the stage.)

Paul suffers from that rare problem of being very talented but can't be pigeoned holed in a genre like the record companies like to do. I saw him live and was an instant convert!
"Rise Up", is a great song about nmotivating yourself in a time of trouble
"Ain't Living in Sin No More", is a prime example of how people view a relationship
The Title track is a page out of "quirky" America
If you like this you are going to love his latest albumn "Are You With Me?"
Witty And Nuanced, Yet Poignant

"Mission Temple Fireworks Stand" is one of Paul Thorn's masterpieces. From the quirky artwork (by Thorn himself) to the oddball mix of country, blues, rock, and comedy intrinsic in the music itself, this CD is hard to beat.
I have always liked Thorn, and especially his peculiar offbeat funny songs full of comic hostility ("Burn Down The Trailer Park" is the best example). This CD not only gives the listener some more conventional pop-like songs, but several original alternative comedy songs full of both broadside humor and subtle nuance, the best example being the title track. This CD has really earned its five stars, and I highly recommend it.
HOLY SMOKES.....REALLY SMOKES!

There I was at the Tower Records listening station, and there was Paul Thorn's new CD. Now the title alone should have been my first clue that this was going to be something....well, let's say different. By the time I was into the first 30 seconds of "Everybody looks good at the starting line" the spirit grabbed me...The spirit moved me... and a little voice said BUY THIS CD NOW!
By the time I got to my car I had the wrapper off and popped this gem into my CD player and I was off to the highway for the 15 minute ride home. Forty minutes later I pulled up in front of my house, sat there and listened to the last two tracks. I decided to miss my turn off and keep driving just to keep the music going. Mr. Thorn knows how to create a picture with his insights to some of lifes little oddities...Folks, the man can flat out write some tasty, funny, heart grabbing & soulful lyrics. "Angel Too Soon" is one of the most touching, immotional songs I've ever heard.
This CD has it all...Paul's "Jack Danials" dipped voice, a major groove, great musicians and intelligent lyrics that catch & give you pause for thought...."MISSION TEMPLE FIREWORKS STAND" IS ABSOLUTELY PERFECT!
