Editorial Review
Referred to by its code name, Jaguar, Mac OS X 10.2 contains more than 150 new features and provides significant enhancements to its modern, Unix-based foundation. From AOL-compatible instant messaging to advanced junk mail filtering and a revolutionary Web search tool, Jaguar is as innovative as the computers that run it. With iChat, the AOL-compatible instant messenger, you can chat with your AOL and Mac.com buddies through a fun, easy-to-use interface. Sherlock 3, the new Web search tool, delivers stock quotes, maps, restaurants, and more without a browser. QuickTime 6 supports MPEG-4, the new worldwide standard for playing and viewing pro-quality audio and video over the Internet. This new version also includes Rendezvous, a revolutionary networking technology that lets you link computers and devices instantly without any configuration. Another cool new feature is Inkwell, which lets you write on a graphics tablet, and Jaguar turns your handwriting into typed text at the cursor in any application. And with new compatibility built into Mac OS X 10.2, sharing files, using Windows documents, and connecting to a Windows network have never been easier. And it easily runs Microsoft Office. For business users, Jaguar comes with Active Directory interoperability, and with a PPTP-based VPN (virtual private network) client that allows Mac users to connect remotely to Windows corporate networks. Jaguar's complete suite of professional-quality developer tools now features GCC 3.1, which radically improves C++ build times and standards compliance. The updated Interface Builder makes it easier to group, lock, and drag Aqua controls between windows for rapid user-interface creation. And, perhaps best of all, these professional tools are still included with every copy of Jaguar, empowering Java, C, and AppleScript Studio developers to do their best work on the Macintosh platform.

MIDI users BEWARE!!! 2003-10-15
I have a Mac G3 which currently runs in OS 8.6. When I bought my copy of Jaguar at Fry's I was told by the salesman that OS 9 was included. What a pack of lies! OS 9 is NOT included in Jaguar!
Now I have to buy OS 9 to run in the "Classic" environment because my notation program (Finale) still hasn't come out in a native OS X version! The only hope I have been offered is to spend another $120 to get Panther so I can order a 9.2 cd ($19.95) from Apple under their Fufillment program.

I know a number of Midi sequencers have updated to OS X, but anyone who runs legacy apps or equipment on their Mac will be bitterly disappointed...

Wait for Panther 2003-10-02
Thought Jaguar is a great update from 10.1, it would be a much better move to wait for Panther which I'm told will be released on October 24. I will include all updated included in 10.2, but you get faster previewing, user switching, and espose. You can see all the updates at apple.com. I have a developers gold copy, and it is really sweet.

Significant Disappointment 2003-09-30
I can't begin to express my disappointment with Mac OS X. I recently upgraded my beige tower to OS X and now need to downgrade to 9.0 to make it work. There are three main problems. First, OS X disables the printer port so you have to buy a new printer in order to print. Second, it disables the floppy drive; it only allows for CD drives or zip drives. Finally, although my system exceeded the minimum requirements, it is very s-l-o-w. For instance, Netscape takes 30 seconds to open a new message window. I strongly recommend against upgrading to OS X. If you have a new computer, it might work, but for an old one stay with the tried and true. My next computer will use Windows; I am disgusted with the Mac.

Well Worth It 2003-09-30
Though I experianced serious problems during the install that forced me to reinstall twice I believe this was because my current version of 10.1.5 was in bad shape. However, since the install I have experianced few problems, though it took me several days to download all the software updates. Virtually all problems I experianced in 10.1.5 have vanished, my isub no longer causes a kernal panic, and Internet Explorer no longer crashes after being launched. I have also found the Safari, Apple's new internet brower is far more stable and faster than Internet Explorer ever was. One of the main reasons I upgraded however was because so many programs required a minimal of 10.2, since then a wealth of new programs have been made availible to me. Jaguar was definitly worth the upgrade, anybody running an older version of Mac OS X should upgrade.

Mac OS X A Giant Step Ahead of Classic Mac OS 2003-09-05
Have been using for months now. Have had only one Kernel Panic(Crash). Panther seems to be a lot more responsive than earlier versions of OS X. Still I really can't say it is better than Windows XP because on my four Windows machines I have yet to see a crash in the almost two years I have been using Win XP. For that reason I am giving Panther four rather than five stars.

Not for old machines 2006-09-24
I installed mac os 10.2 and it booted with no brightness. I'am using a apple wallstreet 250 MHZ. Every time I startup the screen is dim and I have to turn up the contrast. If I wake it up from sleep mode it won't let me adjust the brightness unless I reboot. A real big pain in the neck. I have been using OS 9 for 3 years now. I was planning on upgrading my memory and my hard drive. Then go to 10.2. I'am glad I tested it first before upgrading. That would be a waste of time and money. So it was a good lesson. Do not run Mac OS X on a old machine. Back to 9 I go.

Older iMacs can't do both OS X and 9 2005-09-26
Some features of OS X 10.2 are definitely better, faster on OS X 10.2 than on OS 9.1, but there are several anomalies when interfacing with a Windows dominated world, more than with OS 9.1, such as setting up email (Outlook doesn't seem to work with OS X 10.2), scrolling the sddress book, etc.

The main problem is that on my iMac DV+ (bought late summer 2000), I can't run both Classic and OS X 10.2 - the OS X 10.2 install discs told me I had to do a complete memory wipe of all my Classic documents and applications (I bought an external hard drive to store these but can't start up on it). When I called Apple to see about options to run both Classic and OS X, the technician told me that they no longer supported the older iMac's and that help was $49/question!

Substantial improvement 2003-12-02
This is a very stable, incredibly smooth OS. It launches at lightning speed, is very intuitive and the learning curve is very short. If there is a downside, compatible professional graphic software is in short supply. It is a huge improvement over Windows and previous Mac OS.

Amazon reviews: Now featuring False Information! 2003-10-26
Mac OS X does not disable built-in floppy drives. Mac OS X runs better on computers that are built for it. Running it on a Beige G3 is like running Windows on a 486; you can do it, but it doesn't mean you should. Crashes occour from poorly-designed APPLICATIONS, not OS X. I have had OS X for over a year, and I have had only 2 'kernel panics' (full system lockups). hbj200 is wrong about the 1%. it's more like 8% and growing rapidly, and everyone uses Windows because they believe Bill's propaganda. There is more documentation about digital cameras that networking in OS 10.2 because of Rendezvous (Stable, Efficient Networking for Dummies)

This is awesome 2003-10-16
The best Mac OS yet. I'm amazed each day at the capabilities of this operating system. I haven't had to restart in nearly 5 months! This IS the smoothest, best looking, best running operating system I have EVER used!
