Editorial Review
It's not enough just to run antivirus software anymore. Especially if you've got a broadband connection or spend a lot of time online, you need a personal firewall to keep an eye on hackers trying to access your computer. This is a complex area and unless you're a security expert, you need a program that's simple to configure but that also offers strong protection so you know you can trust the options it suggests.

Norton Personal Firewall 2003 fits the bill on both counts. When you install it, the instructions walk you through configuring your system by choosing network settings and scanning your PC for programs that access the Internet. It knows about common applications, so you won't have to tweak umpteen settings to get your e-mail working, and helpful dialog boxes explain the risks of allowing or blocking access.

Not only does it block port scans (where a hacker tests your connection to the Internet, trying to get access), Norton Personal Firewall 2003 also checks all the data entering and leaving your computer, looking for anything suspicious. If it spots suspicious data transfers, it checks the signature database (like the definitions in an antivirus package, and updated in the same way through LiveUpdate). This protects you against Trojan horses and worms like Nimda and Code Red.

You can also protect yourself on the Web. Turn on ad blocking to get rid of irritating pop-up ads from Web sites. You can also choose what information a site sees about you and your browser, turn off animations, scripts, and flash, or block ads on the page itself; a number of sites are preconfigured for you.

Norton Personal Firewall 2003 blocks all the common attacks, making your PC invisible as well as secure online, and it does it without making your applications hard to use or demanding you become a security expert. --Mary Branscombe

If you can't afford or don't want to get VPN FireWall [Hardware Firewall], this is your second best choice software[Easy to install and Use].My computer was a target for hackers a few times and Norton Firawall/Internet Security Block all traffic and even tracked down my hackers. Works Great!!!

Norton Personal Firewall 2003 2003-09-14
So far so good. Keeps my pc very secure with the latest updates. I don't beleive in anything but Norton all the way.

Dont pay for what can easily be had for free! 2003-09-04
Norton products in general do there job decently. But there are several free firewall software packages out there that will do the job just as well, but for FREE!

try [website](my personal favorite)or a product caled "Tiny Personal Firewall" available at download.com. In fact everyone of nortons products can be replaced for free and most of these free softwares work better than norton products. Such as AVG, a anti-virus software package that in the free version provides you with all updates, for free, that norton will for a monthly fee. the norton brand name is absolutly worthless. Do your homework you can do better!

The Best Protection for your PC! 2003-08-24
I recently got a cable modem so my PC is always connected to the internet. I was having problems with people accessing my PC and randomly installing programs...scary! A friend of mind suggested Norton Personal Firewall so I bought it. It's easy to use and it's 100% customizable and user friendly. I was also pleasantly surprised that it has a pop up blocker. It works perfectly. Since installing the program I haven't had any attacks on my PC nor have I had issues with annoying popup ads.

From the mouth of the uninitiated... 2003-08-10
A victim of a malicious hacker, I was quickly propelled into the world of internet security. This review is intended for those among you who, like me, don't know a broadband router from a toaster (and am NOT proud of it!).

The reviews of this product by consumers were enormously helpful to me, and ultimately gave me the confidence to purchase the product. I was nervous after reading several reviews which described difficulties with respect to web access and so on, to the extent of having to uninstall it (and by those who knew what they were doing). And so I embarked on the project with no small trepidation. Well, the installation went flawlessly, with no help from me. And now the software runs seamlessly, invisibly, and trouble-free on my platform (Windows XP). I've been using it for a month and have encountered no difficulties whatsoever. And it's remarkably effective at blocking pop-ups/unders, cookies, banners etc. in addition to the protection affored against those pathetic miscreants who would do us harm. I couldn't feel more secure.

Again, for those with no technical background like myself, I recommend my setup - a D-Link Ethernet Broadband Router (which I stuck in the loop in 2 minutes (no software or other challenges) combined with Norton's Personal Firewall 2003 - if I can install this setup with no worries, ANYONE can! Trust me.

Thanks to all who reviewed this product (the good and the bad reviews) - they were a great help to me. Be safe out there amigos.

Nothing but problems with this software 2004-04-24
I have had this product for ~ one year on my laptop and have had nothing but problems with it. I have had to install and reinstall no less than five times, had difficulties reestablishing my subscription during the install/uninstall process, and the software does not provide cable users like myself who are under constant attack a way to block intrusions without an endless number of pop-up windows asking whether or not to block or permit obvious attacks that should be blocked automatically. I have really tried to make this product work, have worked with Symantec's customer support, and have given up on this product and this company. I am evaluating other products at this time.

BEWARE OF ANY NORTON PRODUCT! 2004-04-19
Do NOT buy ANY Symantec Product UNLESS YOU WILL NEVER HAVE A NEED FOR CUSTOMER SERVICE - THERE IS NONE! I have just spent 4 hours AFTER HAVING PAID for SUBSCRIPTION RENEWAL trying to get my Firewall renewal activated. After going through 15 menus on-line to try and email customer service, I was given a form. I entered the info. When I finally got an email response, it had nothing to do with my question, then told me if it didn't help, I would have to REPEAT THE ENTIRE ON-LINE Process! I then called their "Customer Service" line - PUT ON HOLD FOR 30 MINUTES! Finally had to redo renewal by phone without answer to question. This is typical of ANY NORTON PRODUCT CUSTOMER SERVICE!

Go slow 2004-03-30
Although this product works well it is large and degrades the performance of most PC's. Zone Alarm Pro is faster and works just as well (if not better). Norton has lost their edge in an effort to bring a "new and improved" product to market each year.

Big Fat Annoying Program 2004-01-24
I recently upgraded to this version of NPF, and my computer runs much slower ever since. There are many things I don't like about the install process, about the user interface, and I really don't think it was worth my money. There's a recommendation among these reviews to go to download.com and get some freeware. Even though I've already paid for a year's subscription to Norton's antivirus updates, I'm very tempted to through the whole thing away and try the freeware.

Norton Never Again 2004-01-07
I have been loyal to Norton for almost a decade. No more.
Positive-NAV seems to be working ok (so 1 star)
Negative-the abusive activation scheme
the bundled trash programs (FIREWALL, etc.)
(deserves minus stars and circular file)
Firewall will 100% protect you from internet intrusion and infection, because it cuts you off from the internet. It is very user unfriendly, it doesn't provide adequate support (It cuts you off from the internet, the manual is useless and the ONLY source of help provided is an internet address!!!!!!!!!)
An example of the stupid controls: Scan for threats, find five, programs recommended action DELETE, then gives a choice of ALLOW (the threat becomes permanent!?!) or skip (no action this time, spend another 2 hours and get the same stupid choice later)! I restored internet access after hours of tweaking, next time I had to do it all over again, BUT my previous tweaks wouldn't always work!!! Never will I buy Norton again!!!
