Not great for back pain relief
2008-03-21
I know there are a few reviews by people who bought this for their pet and gave it good reviews. But my review is for people that want to use it for back pain relief, and that does not warrant a good review.
The high heat setting is probably good enough, although it could be a tad hotter. The big problem here is that the heat does not stay on. It constantly "pulses" on and off every 5 minutes or so. So you don't get steady heat to your back.
This pad is also a mess after you have used it. The "bag" that it is in is impossible to straighten out after it has been used. I try my best, and get it as flat as possible, but there are still many, many wrinkles in it. Very poor design.
The only reason I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 is the price. It certainly is a good price. But you do get what you pay for. I would not recommend this for somebody looking for a heating pad for back pain.
Be Warned...

I ordered this heating pad to warm blankets and towels for my newborn, but was sorely disapponted to find a tag on the cord that read, "The power cord on this product contains lead... wash hands after handling." It's made in China, so I really shouldn't be surprised, but I wish there had been a disclaimer in the item description.
Can't beat it for the price!

Yes, the cord is quite stiff and kind of fights you, but it lets up after awhile. NOTE: this unit does come with a lead warning ("The power cord on this unit contains lead...") on the cord. So, if you are very lead conscientious or have a total aversion to the stuff you have been notified.
The heat is quick and even. I use it for my feet while I am at my desk, and I have found that in the dead of winter I only use the "low" setting.
The blue chintzy 'cover' is, well, cheap and just one of those perfunctory items manufacturers send with the unit because they were told to do so. Most people are probably going to use a pillow case or be so cool as to make their own. My cat likes it, and fights me for space while it is on. So, if it was a little bigger (or my cat was a lot smaller) I would dig it immensely.
Get it, it is worth the price and does the trick. You just have to be conscious enough to remember to turn it off. Or hook it up to a timer?
Very good pad for an excellent price!

I bought three of these to go under animal cages. It does say not to put anything on top of them, so I raise the cages slightly, but they have been a huge hit. Like other reviewers have said, they provide a nice even heat. The thing I also like about them is they are very portable - you can just roll one up and take it with you, which, when you work with animals, is a great thing to have. I also like that they have a removeable washable cover... another great thing to have when you are using them with animals! I have been using them for 3 months, now, without any problems.
Sunbeam 756-5 Heating pad
2008-02-11
The Sunbeam 765-5 heating pad works as it should: turn it on, and it comes on and stays on until you turn it off. Most heating pads sold today automatically shut off after a period of time. None of the manufacturer's literature on the Amazon.com website addressed this key point. But one of the reviewers said the 765-5 did not automatically shut off, so I bought 10 of them. They all work fine.
Previously I had bought 10 Soft Heat HP110 heat pads. They worked fine, but were destroyed over time during domestic problems in the feral cat condominium building in our back yard, where the pads are used to keep the kitties warm during the winter months. Automatic shutoff would render the heat pad useless for this purpose. In fact for just about any purpose. But if you want a heating pad for a paralyzed or unconscious person in a heated facility, and you will not be around to shut off the heat pad, and the patient doesn't really need a heat pad, automatic shut off is the way to go. Besides, when it automatically shuts off it saves electricity!

We bought this item a little while ago and find that it's a very reliable little heating pad. It certainly does its job. The chord is pretty stiff and could be uncomfortable for some.

I use this on my massage clients to assist in warming up the tissue. It works great for what I use it for. The cord is stiff but works for me.

All heating pads at the store have timers on them. I needed one without. This is it, works great.
