I've owned it for years
2008-09-05
I agree with most of the reviews. I have owned this feeder for about 5 years now. It is reliable and simple and easy to clean. I saw one reviewer who said their cat broke into the feeder. One thing I learned quickly is that you really have to snap the lid into place. I did not do that initially -- it was only partly snapped into place -- and my cat could easily move the top. So, perhaps that is the problem with that reviewer's unit? Anyway, the things I dont like about it: 1) battery operated and the battery lasts only about a month when set to every 12 hours; 2) the timer is simple, but as one reviewer noted, you cant set it to the time of day, only to open every 6, 12 or 24 hours. Unfortunately, I dropped the motor today while replacing the battery, so I am now shopping for a new one!
A simple item that works well

I have three cats, two of whom overeat if dry food is always available. I use this bowl for portion control. It can be set to open a new compartment every 6, 12 or 24 hours. I have it set to open every six hours, and it has proven to be very effective. Because the cats get a feeding at 4 AM, they have stopped bugging the humans to get up earlier to feed them. The bowl is very low-tech (a battery turns the lid above six compartments), easy to clean, and promises to last very well.
neither thrilled nor disappointed

Product meets its basic claims, however, design improvements are needed.
-very very difficult to snap timer and trays together and line them up properly
-ice packs leak
-tray not dishwasher friendly - oversized and stops the washer arms from rotating
-which direction is the rotation? Can it be indicated on the dish please? I will take a sharpie and mark it. This is important because I freeze a can of food for the feedings two days away, and dont want them to get THAT feeding on the day I leave
cats have adjusted well to their "space feeders" and the product does what it claims, but its kinda a p.i.t.a. for the owner
I would like to see a feeder come out with a timer with hourly settings like a light timer, so I don't have to set up the feeder 6,12 or 24 hours exactly in advance of the cats mealtimes
Great for a midnight cat snack

I read many, many reviews before buying this product. Many were bad, particularly for the 8-day feeder. But after reading about other mistakes and reading the directions carefully, this product has worked great for me. My cat had gotten in the habit of wanting to be fed at 3am every morning and this solved the problem. Now the machine feeds him and I stay in bed, he is also pre-fed when I get home from work. I have used it only with dry food, and it has not jammed as long as I only put 1/2 cup of food in it. It is somewhat loud, and wakes me up sometimes, but it better than a cat meowing for 3 hrs. My cat has not tried to break into it either, but he doesn't have claws. Overall, very satisfied and much cheaper than boarding over a long weekend!
my life is easier & the cats are happier

Great product - easy to use. Perfect for dry food but works well with canned food too. Highly recommend.

My cat was to smart!
2008-04-03
I appreciated the idea of the product, but my cat was too smart for it. If he wanted more food, he could just lift the turning lid with his claws and knock the turning lid off track, giving him access to the entire 6 days worth of food. Even after reading a review from another individual, saying that she didn't think her cat was smart enough to figure it out, he did, I didn't think mine was either; I was wrong. I did up returning it. If the turning lid wouldn't have been able to be moved by my cat, I would have kept it.
Great for dry food but not wet food
2008-03-18
I always appreciate when folks write reviews because then you really know what you are getting. If you are looking for a feeding dish for you pet who eats wet food stop here....hire a pet sitter. I have an older cat which requires feeding twice a day. I work longer hours but they aren't long enough to warrant a pet sitter daily. The first time i tried this item the containers thawed out by the end of the day. I did try it on a weekend when i was home to make sure the food did not go bad by sitting out in the open for hours without being chilled. The second time I froze the later half of the days food so by the time it got around to feeding time again 12 hours after putting out the food it was just the right tempature. Good luck if you have a cat like mine!
Contrary to some other reviews, WE LOVE IT!!!!

My partner and I have owned this device for over four months and have had a tremendously positive experience with it and because it has worked so well for us, I wanted to address some concerns that other reviewers have noted.
First, our context: we have a large older male cat who overeats if provided with a regular drop feeder and who previously woke us up at varying random hours of the early morning and throughout the night begging for his regular feedings (which we previously needed to do manually due to his overeating). We enjoy going away for a day or two on the weekend intermittently and had to rely on various kind friends and neighbors to come over to feed him so that he would gorge while we were away. He is a grumpy and finicky, though not nearly as aggressive as other reviewer's cats, eater and likes to eat right on a fairly regular schedule. This device has been a true blessing for both us and him. We now all three sleep through the night and we are confident that when we go away for an evening or two, his feeding is well taken care of on a schedule he is used to.
Contrary to several other posts, though, we have had no issues with limited battery life, as our current generic battery has lasted almost two months (feeding every twelve hours). The battery is not as difficult to change as other reviewers have mentioned, simply drop the 9V battery in the housing and connect the wire to the terminals and put the cap back on. It is clear that should our cat have broken into the device, there is a fairly simple way (if you're handy) to make the device more tamper resistant, as mentioned by a previous reviewer. We discovered that the inner "clock" mechanism of the device can be conveniently set in a manner not mentioned in the owner's manual: each time the 6-12-24 hour switch is toggled, the time resets---it's that simple. We like to feed him at 5AM and 5PM, so, for one day each two months or so (it seems), one of us needs to toggle the 6-12-24 switch at either 5AM or 5PM, which we've discovered is a whole lot easier than waking up at 2A or 1:30A back in B.F. (Before Feeder). And, when we go away, we feed him only once a day and he seems to be quite content with the slightly more than 2/3 cup of his food that the trays fit. We simply top it off and rotate the cover by hand, making sure it doesn't jam and smoothing and clearing food as needed.
It's a great device and our sanity has been well worth the small price to purchase it! Not to mention, our tubby cat seems to be much much more content not having to rely upon us for his feedings.
Happy Meow!

It does not work for smart cat
2008-01-20
My cat is too smart for this product. The first week works fine, but she figures out after a week, she can just put her paw under the cover to lift the cover out and move the dish cover to other dish which contains food, after that, the motor will not turn the dish cover because the motor can't control the dish cover and the whole dish cover runs loose and moves freely. That is the design fault, if the manufacture makes the motor and dish cover engage more, even the smart cat can't open it.
If you have a low IQ cat, it will work perfect for your cat.
