Broad and deep 2005-08-03
You probably keep seeing those phrases in the popular news: "According to this week's Science magazine ...", or "... as reported in Science." So why are you still reading second hand news? There is a flow to information, and the best is up-stream.

Biology is big, of course, but so are physics, archaeology, astronomy, economics, solid-state studies, psychology, and just about any other quantitative study you can name. More than that, there is news of the larger world, about funding sources in the EU, political maneuverings in the US, and cultural and social sensitivities around emerging pathogens in East Asia.

And, I admit to a personal bias: happy memories of reading my grandfather's copies when I was a teen, one of the special treats of being with him. Above all, science is a very human endeavor.

Ignore the inflated subscription price listed here. AAAS membership costs far less, and gives you 50 issues per year free with membership. If any of the hard sciences matter to you, they all do to some extent, and this will keep you informed about all of them. Check your library, see if it suits your taste, and get your own. It's the perfect nutrient for the active mind.

The most respected magazine on science printed in the US 2005-06-01
A subscription to the magazine is well worth the money. Between it and the British publication "Nature" it the gold standard for the publication of important scientific articles. Although some of the journal articles can seem impenetrable once one gets used to the style in which the articles are written one will be able to follow them with a little practice. The magazine is a great way to keep abreast of new developments in science and to exercise your mind.

Of course in is invaluable to anyone employed in the sciences.

The magazine is organized into sections: editorials, letters, books reviews, synopses of scientific discoveries and of course original scientific articles published for the first time. The most difficult reading are of course the original articles that describe recent discoveries.

Even if you have difficulty in reading the later you will in time get used to reading them while as for the rest of the magazine anyone with a modicum of scientific knowledge will find it accessible.

This magazine and Nature are the best ways to keep current in advances in science.

Highly recommended

AAAS flagship publication 2004-07-11
The flagship publication of the AAAS, and probably the best American equivalent to Britain's Nature. The articles are research reports, with the quality very high due to the AAAS's careful review process.

Typically, an article is sent here instead of going to a more specialised journal in the author's field because she thinks it might have broader interest than just strictly in her field. Outreach. Sometimes perhaps to improve her chances of getting future research grants, since this journal is very well known.
