Works as expected
2008-06-06
This switch is exactly what I expected it to be: solid. Just like the other Netgear equipment I've used, the GS108 is completely hassle-free.
My whole house is wired Ethernet in no more time than it took to plug in the cables. I took it out of the box, plugged in the power cord, and plugged in connections and I was up.
It's idiot-proof, since all 8 ports automatically detect connection speed and uplink/downlink.
Indicator lights show which ports are in use, and at what speed.
Average Performance - Short life

I had this average performing device for 11 months before it began behaving erratically. Netgear's out of US warranty service requires you to pay for shipping both the return and the REFURBISHED one that they send back to you.
I expected much more from Netgear and this device.
Just works

I plugged it in and it just works on my network (all Vista machines). No issues. Does the job you expect. This is what I expect of a networking appliance.
Works well

I have had no trouble with this switch. Other reviews suggested some major issues, especially when using two together. I think that maybe there were runs of defective products, or people with miswired networks? Not sure. Have had no issues, does not run hot, even after transferring large (gigabytes) amounts of data, still fairly cool to the touch.
Very disappointed

I purchased the NETGEAR GS108 to replace a Gigafast 10/100 switch; to speed up backups from our home gigabit enabled PCs to our NAS (Network Attached Storage) devices. Well, it was a disappointment from second 1.
My DSL router just rebooted continually, and I suffered from local broadcast storms. I am using a Proline DSL router, from my local carrier. Wireshark showed the broadcast traffic was being switched erratically, thus its continuance.
I called Netgear Tech Support, very bad. They asked just a few basic questions, and then said my unit was faulty and that it should be returned. Lucky for me that Amazon has a great return policy, I really appreciated that. 2 stars because of that.
My son advised me to purchase an HP ProCurve Switch 1400-8G. Bless his nerdy heart. Well, I did, and it has worked flawlessly. Available via Amazon for a similar price. Lifetime warranty too, amazing for a device like this. It is working flawlessly.
Of course, your mileage may vary. Many people seem to like the NetGear product, and that's why I purchased it initially.
I should also add that the gigabit switch update has shortened my backups to 10 minutes from 30. Not bad.
good but could be better

i have two of the gs108 switch, one is the version 1 (larger) and one version 2 (shown in the pic), the version 1 has been working for 3 years now and had no problem at all. the version 2 one just quit yestereday.
the symptom was all of the LEDs blinks at the same time (on - off - on), and the computer shows the network cable was unplugged. did a little bit search and it seems this is a quite common problem for this switch, it was caused by two capacitors (6.3v 1000uF), following others steps i replaced them with two 10v 1000uF, and now everything is workig again!
so if you have similar problem, check the capacitors, unless you can wait for netgear send you a replacement. the two capacitors cost about $4, i'd say cheapter than the shipping cost.
Piece of junk

Mine lasted 28 months, then bricked with the "green lights of death." Save your money and buy a different switch.
Inexpensive, reliable equipment

I have been using a Netgear 24-port Gigabit switch ( Netgear JGS524NA ProSafe 24-Port Gigabit Rackmount Switch ) for about two years, and added this one in June 2008. Never had any problems, and as others have pointed out, pretty much plug-n-play; with auto uplink and small but readable lights, these are hassle free unmanaged switches. Our network consists of Macs, Linux, Windoze, and NAS boxes -- all seem to play well. I am also a big fan of the metal enclosures as they add a degree of sturdiness that plastic units can't muster. I have used these for portable temporary net expansion and the metal has made a difference in certain mishaps between having a switch and throwing away a broken switch.
Sturdy, fast, and "just works" - exactly what I want from a switch

Just like my trusty old FS116 I bought here on Amazon years ago and gave a glowing review to, this FS108 is cut from the same cloth. It features a nice, sturdy metal casing that doesn't creak or flex at all.
Like higher-end enterprise equipment, the LEDs are on the jacks so you can see which connection is what speed (or not working) without having to constantly turn the device around as with lower-end devices where the LEDs are on the front and the jacks on the rear. This makes debugging a bad cable much easier!
Other than that, I just plugged these in (I own two of them) and they work perfectly to provide gigabit connectivity throughout my house, eventually terminating at an Apple Airport Extreme router providing the wireless 802.11n. No issue with interoperability or anything at all -- just like a switch should be!
dies quickly
2008-06-25
Works very well while alive, but I've seen 3 of these die already; average lifespan seems to be a shade under 2 years.
