Detto Move2Mac USB Review
2008-08-12
Ok, well I read all the reviews, most of which were not so great, but I decided to go ahead and try it anyway. The software worked great. Was it perfect? No. Did it save me a big headache and a lot of time? Yes. I would recommend this software to someone switching to a Mac. I guess I had a lot of data to move because it did take 5 hours or more for the process to be complete. It does not move your e-mail nor does it put your favorites where they belong. They are on the Mac but not in the right spot. You have to transfer that by hand. I have also read that you can not use the software more than once, so keep that in mind. I am happy with the outcome!
Poor product - there are better methods

I have a LOT of experience on PCs as well as Macs. The PC part of this product is poorly written and it fails if it has a problem with a file - it won't skip and continue. The tech support people are unhelpful. This purchase was a complete waste of time. Even if it worked "once" it's too expensive and as others noted, you can't reinstall it. I bought it originally thinking, ok it's pricey but it's my daughter's graduation present and we are going to be 300 miles from home and I don't have time and this should be fast. One less thing to think about on a busy trip right? Well.. we spent a day trying to use this product and then giving up and doing it ourselves.
If you are a non-technical person go to a retail support depot and pay for the migration. Or go into the Apple store and ask for help if there is one nearby. If you are technical, you are much better off to buy a generic USB bridge cable for less than $30, or use an external USB hard drive for an intermediate copy (my preference) or use an Ethernet connection between the machines.
Differences between Windows NTFS and Mac file systems might cause some issues with copies. HFS+/UFS, HFS+, and UFS each have different limits on restricted characters, case sensitivity and long file names. Check to see what file system is on your Mac and read up on compatibility. To copy from Windows to external hard drive in bulk consider Windows Xcopy command (set switch to ignore errors) instead of the graphical drag and drop which fails if there is an error. If you need to shorten file names, a free program called Shorts from Greggman is very handy.
Very expensive for a slow, one time use

I transfered a lot of large files from PC to Mac (12GB in all). It took over 4 hours, but worked as advertised. I have two computers (I didn't realize that it didn't allow multiple transfers until after purchase). Very expensive and frankly not worth the money if you have to purchase a new "license" for about the same price to move multiple files. Actually, its ridiculous. The company should make the license per user and not per use. Cheaper to just by DVD's and do the transfer that way.
Oversold Expectations

After reading the laudatory and critical reviews of this product, I decided to buy it. Having been forewarned, I followed the instructions extremely carefully, word for word, letter by letter, only to see the transfer crash after running for about 15 hours. I then followed the troubleshooting guide, word for word, and the system refused to respond. I even got a second copy from Detto's technical support, which, in turn, also failed.
Eventually, I moved 90% of the files by simply burning them to a DVD and copying them, or in following the applications instructions (E.g., Intuit's Quicken for Mac) to carry the files over on a thumb drive. And, to no one's surprise, it wasn't possible to transfer Outlook's addressbook or mail files through ANY procedure, even to Microsoft's own Entourage e-mail client, which is Outlook's counterpart in the Microsoft Office for Mac suite (what does THAT say about Microsoft??).
This product simply isn't reliable, and the functions it performs can be done easier and cheaper with the tools you already have (a DVD burner and a thumb drive).
Saved a little time

The product nade the move to my iMac from my PC a little easier, but I still had a lot of problems transferring my Outlook files. I finally had to do this manually.

Move2Mac is a complete solution for moving information from PC to Mac -- All your music, photos, files and folders are moved easily!
It does EXACTLY what it's advertised to do.

If you feel the need to move from a computer platform that 96% of the world uses to a platform that only 4% of the world uses, but costs twice as much as the other, this is the software for you. It works perfectly, exactly as specified, just remember that if you're going to move more than one Mac, you need to buy a multiple license version of this software from Detto.
After you make your move to Mac, enjoy that Spinning Beach Ball of wait n wait n wait n wait..., that OS X is so famous for. ;^P
Easy, reliable but slower than advertised

Maybe it was because I had lots of photos and video files to move, but it took overnight to transfer everything I wanted transferred. The good news is that everything transferred perfectly and went exactly where the program said it would go. Set up was easy and though I doubted it would work, it did. Just be patient if you have lots of photos or videos.
TERRIBLE customer support

It has been the worst software purchasing experience I've ever had and it's not over yet. I ordered the software 3 weeks ago and paid for 2nd day air shipping. It never arrived so I emailed Detto--twice--to find out the status of my order. Nobody responded.
I called and and a very nice person told me that Detto had a 'change of personnel and some of the orders fell through the cracks.' She put my software in the mail right away and upgraded the shipping to overnight.
When I tried to install the software a screen popped up asking for the License Code. Hmmm...what license code? The only items in the box were a CD in a sleeve (with no numbers or markings of any kind) and a USB cable. Period. No code anywhere. (Turns out there was supposed to be a QuickStart guide and/or user's manual with the code on it). I called the customer service number. After an interminable phone conversation, the woman finally decided I needed to mail in a proof of purchase and they would then send me the code! I pitched a fit and FINALLY she agreed to email me the license code and activation code. She assured me the code would arrive via email 'within 3-5 minutes' and I could then activate the product and use the software.
The email never arrived and when I called again to find out what happened, I got a recording that they were closed! So...here I am, three weeks and $50 of so far useless software later, still unable to transfer data with this program.
Disappointing

The product advertises that it transfers the average person's files from their PC to the Mac in 15 minutes. That is a joke. I had about 100 photos and 1000 MP3's (which I do not think is that far above average) and my estimated transfer time was 550 minutes. For the price it almost would have been worth it just to spend the time burning everything to CDs.
Note that this product does not transfer programs, only your files. So you must install each program that you wish to transfer files of onto your Mac as well.
I also had some issues of connecting both laptops to the internet and tried to opt to do the telephone option for verifying the license code. I waited on the phone for over half an hour to talk with a representative before I finally gave up.
Before starting the project, make sure you have a lot of time to allow the files to transfer as you cannot shut down either computer during the transfer time.
