Customer Reviews
OEM.

This powercord is slickly designed, but tends to overheat and eventually short out. I love that the indicator lights up to orange to tell you its charging, green to tell you it's charged, red if there is some kind of error. A little pricy, and not as reliable as some less flashy replacements that other companies make, but if you are like me, and you loved your OEM power cord, this is the replacement for you.

Why does Apple keep making shoddy products?
2008-01-16
I've had the same problem with my power cord -- it started fraying and shredded itself at the connection point to the computer. Obviously it was poorly designed, but when I went to the Apple store for a replacement, they said the warrantee wouldn't cover it and that I would have to buy a new one for ninety bucks(!). So, I taped it up the frayed connection and have limped along ever since. This is after I went through three defective iBooks and PowerBooks with bad batteries, faulty logic boards, etc. Plus an iPod that self-destructed and won't reboot.
I think I'm beginning to see a pattern here. Nice to see all the comments on Amazon that show that I'm not the only one and that I wasn't "misusing" the product.
I've been a loyal Apple user since 1989, but I'm starting to rethink that position. Instead of rolling out newer, flashier products every six months, Steve Jobs might want to take a look at quality control so that he actually *keeps* the customers he's gaining now (as well as old-timers like myself) Consumers aren't going to stick with a company that charges a lot of money for shoddy merchandise. Not Buying It

There's not a chance that I'd even consider buying this to replace the one that just broke, especially here. Even with the so-called 33% discount, this costs a little more than it would to buy directly from Apple's overpriced website. I'm going for a third-party adapter that costs less than half as much.
Apple, hello!!??

I have a late-run PowerBook G4 (2005). I am extremely easy on my laptop. If I do need to carry it somewhere, I had never used the cord wrap-around feature on the block (up until this weekend). Woe is me for making that mistake! Last night, I noticed my battery light ring flickering and the computer not charging. I started checking my plug at the wall and on the computer. Then I picked up the power adapter block and it was burning hot with the laptop plug coming out of it smoking and melting! Okay, this is a problem.
I immediately unplugged it and used my remaining battery life to order a new one from Amazon. I was in fear of it catching on fire, so I didn't try plugging it in again. I now have no laptop until the new charger arrives. No company is perfect, but this is a fire hazard; not something minor or cosmetic. If the adapter was less expensive to replace, or its design improved, I would be very understanding. However, neither of these is the case, and I am stuck spending $80+ on a new one that is going to break again.

Apple Portable Power Adapter - This portable power adapter is the perfect accessory if you're on the road with your iBook or PowerBook computer. NOTE - Only compatible with the Titanium PowerBook G4 or dual-USB iBook with 500MHz G3 processor or higher
if your cable broke, this is an option...

...but Apple should be ashamed of themselves. They make wonderful products but don't support their consumers. I don't see any reason why they can't at least offer a replacement that won't eventually wear out.
Consistently bad quality

The original adapter that came with our iBook just decided to stop working (no one kicked the cord, or dropped it, or anything like that - it was always plugged into the same outlet under our kitchen desk). So, we bought the replacement. Worked fine for about a month, but then I had to unplug it temporarily the other day to use the outlet for something. In doing so I accidentally dropped the charger about 4 inches onto our wood floor, and killed it. Ridiculously fragile!
Why buy AGAIN?

Apple has had this problem for YEARS. The same thing that is happening to my ibook charger happened with my clamshell charger (which i REBOUGHT stupidly 4 TIMES!!!) It always tears in the same place. I am going with the generic Macally this time...it's HALF the price!
Apple's G4 AC Adapter
2007-07-16
In the year and a half that I have owned my iBook G4, I have went through two ac adapters from Apple (that I got directly from the company itself). For the eighty bucks (or any bucks for that matter) they charge, it is SO not worth it. It gets unbearable hot, are not very sturdy or durable (that's a given), and have a tendency to burn out. Very easily. It's pretty, but that's about it. If you buy one, buy several more. You'll need them.
