Editorial Review
James Mason plays Professor Oliver Lindenbrook, a scientist hoping to find the world's core in this 1959 adaptation of the Jules Verne novel. He leads his unusual party on an expedition to the center of the earth, by way of a volcano in Iceland. On the way, they encounter enormous mushrooms and giant prehistoric monsters. Produced by Michael Todd with then-spectacular special effects, the story was modernized to 1950s sensibilities. Mason gives this class, while Arlene Dahl and Diane Baker are the romantic interests. And Pat Boone is more palatable than you might expect as a secondary lead. You can watch this with your children and not be bored, and they will surely love it. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Journey to the Center of the Earth 2008-04-14
Super movie...brings me back to when I was a kid when my grandparents took me to see if for the first time. Will enjoy watching it over and over again.

try it once 2008-03-25

tks

Restoration is beautiful! 2008-03-09
This is one of those great classics starring James Mason. Although budget limited some lousy effects (even for 1959)this is still a great film to remember and it has been restored magificently in Dolby surround sound! Other Classic mason films include 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea (Special Edition) and North By Northwest.
If you like this, then I would also suggest the film made a week after this, using the same sets, dialogue and effects, and ends up with (surprise) a volcanic eruption.
It is called The Lost world, and the best available version is here (The Lost World (Special Edition) - 1960 & 1925 versions) This film stars Michael Rennie (The Day the Earth Stood Still) and Claude Rains (Caesar and Cleopatra, Invisible Man - The Legacy Collection (The Invisible Man/Invisible Man Returns/Invisible Agent/Invisible Woman/Invisible Man's Revenge)) Both films are good fun.
ENJOY!

Centered Movie 2008-02-28
Wonderful movie of the early science fiction genre of Jules Verne. A must see if you have been bombarded by the lackluster remakes as seen on TV.

Another Great Classic! 2008-02-09
Journey to the Center of the Earth is another great classic like The Time Machine. The scenery is well done and the story is quite an adventure! I highly recommend it!

the journey 2008-02-07
I have never downloaded a movie, but I know that this movie is an all-time classic for us baby boomers.
and I would hope, the new generations would find something they like in it.
this is one of those all family movies...set with some humor lines in it.

James mason gets down---I mean way down. 2008-02-05
A Professor (James Mason) is given a piece of lava for a present. It proves to be too heavy for the type of lava. Upon examination there is a message inside that will eventually take this professor through many adverse adventures eventually leading to a "Journey to the Center of the Earth"

I usually side with the book. However this time it is the movie that I will hold as the standard. This is better than all the subsequent attempts to re-interpret the story. They picked just the right people for the parts. Pat Boone as Alec McEwen, "Goodbye Charlie" (1964), James Mason as Professor Oliver Lindenbrook, and Arlene Dahl as Mrs. Carla Goetaborg. And Thayer David was the sinister Count Saknussmen. Many of the location scenes were at Carlsbad Caverns, NM. And it was a nice touch to include "My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose" a song using the words of Robert Burns.

The count had no scruples when it came to shooting or eating. However I was a little upset when he ate Gertrude.

I still watch this periodical. And kid about the three marks of Arny Saknussmen when they show the footprint of the Mantis "The Deadly Mantis" (1957), as it has the same three marks.

Escape to a different world... 2008-02-01
Go ahead...escape into a different world...a world of imagination and fantasy...a world of monsters, natural beauty, adventure, good guys and bad guys, romance...a world above and below the surface of reality. No, I am not talking about the twilight zone. Journey to the Center of the Earth was a fantastic movie when I saw it in the theaters as a boy and it remains a fantastic movie now. An excellent job was done on restoring this movie onto dvd and it is a tribute to the excellent actors who star in it. The sound and non-computerized special effects help to make this a fun escape for the entire family.

There's a Difference between Movies and Music ! 2008-01-01
WHY oh WHY do movie reviews find there way into the page for cd reviews?
It's "dvd this and dvd that" over & over again! This is a soundtrack cd
here. The only visuals are in the mind of the listener. Is it Amazon's
problem? I don't really care, but SOMEONE needs to address this miscue.
O.K., maybe that someone is just gonna be me for the time being. Review:
The music on this cd is lifted directly from the 35mm print film. That
provides for many advantages and disadvantages. I leave that up to you.
The score that was written is priceless, vintage Herrmann. It might be
a simple exercise to descend with organs & unconventional ensembles and
ascend with the same. But the realization isn't any less complex than a
trip into your head and back. Turn off the lights, lock the doors (skip
3 Pat Boone songs) and enter into the bowels of your gray matter. Here.
