T40 is a solid laptop
2008-04-22
I bought my T40 used and didn't pay the typically high IBM pricetag, however I have been extremely impressed with this notebook. The speed, reliability, and build quality are excellent. Some of my laptops at work are newer, but I wouldn't trade even up for them. ThinkPads have a great tactile response to the keyboard and the multinav is convenient (once you get used to it). My 2 year old dropped mine on a tile floor on its corner - not a scratch on it and still worked great. Can your laptop do that??
Great computer, even for the money

While I've typically found IBM laptops to be slightly overpriced, and while I had a negative experience with an old X model, the T40 is worth its weight in gold. It doesn't overheat like most laptops (probably due to the Centrino processor), so you can actually use it on your lap (major bonus), the battery life is fantastic, even when using battery intensive apps like media players, ppt, etc. My only complaint is that when dealing with graphics apps like Fireworks, Freehand, etc., the computer does slow down. I don't really see this as that much of a fault as these programs were really designed to run on faster desktops with more RAM. I've dropped the T40 about a dozen times, and still no problem. Chalk it up to luck if you will, but until I'm proven otherwise, and even though its slightly ugly, I'm an IBMer for life. BTW, much better customer service than Dell or Compaq, at least in my opinion.
Use at your own risk

I got my T40 (512mb ram) last summer. After working well for a few months, the hard drive and motherboard went bad and I had to send it back for repairs. After getting it back, it worked well once more, but now I am having frequent problems with overheating when running intensive applications. I would recommend buying another brand with similar specs - thinkpads are overpriced anyway.
